Is it possible to create notations for complex rhythmic subdivisions without resorting to attempting to get it to split into triplets and duplets? I'm starting to feel sorta even more in the minority than before, since I still use my Amiga for sequencing. I've just been wondering, have any of you Amiga users(if there are any of you out there) used Bars and Pipes Pro by Blue Ribbon Soundworks? I've been using it for a while, and I love it. Now I'm no "professional" musician, so maybe it isn't that useful for other people, but I've found it to be an extremely well thought out program, especially the funky user interface. I'd just be interested to hear any comments about this program. I'm somewhat sad to see people leaving the Amiga... except for people who are using the Video Toaster, of course. One more thing: I'm interested in buying a sampler for my Amiga 3000, but I don't know a thing about what's currently available and what's good. I'd like a high-quality, stereo sampler, along with editing software that allows me to do all various sorts of effects. Is there anything that would do effects in real time? Thanks. If you are planning to run Windows 3.1 on your PC, I would recommend you take a look at Cakewalk Pro for Windows by Twelve Tone Systems. I have found it to be very powerful and the graphical interface makes editing a breeze. It also has its own programming language that allows you to extend its funtionality. Check it out. Well, I've tried the Cubase demo for MS Windows 3.1. It is a fully functional version, except it won't write out any files to save your efforts. My humble opinion is that, while I really liked a lot of its features, it still needs some work. On two different occasions I had notes stuck while recording a part (and the stuck notes recurred when playing back the recorded part). I also got an UAE from it once. The other annoying thing is that moving the mouse during playback noticably slowed the tempo down (it resumed the proper tempo when mouse movement stopped). Cubase (under Windows) was the only thing running on my system, so it isn't like there was any contention for the system. This is on a 33 MHz 386 which, while it isn't the fastest system around, is certainly no slouch as a MIDI system. The only other Windows MIDI software I've tried is Band-In-A-Box, which I found to be very well behaved. I found I could set it up to play back a song, iconize it, fire up the Windows communication utility, log in to a UNIX system, start up a file transfer, bring up Windows Write and edit a file, all the while Band-In-A-Box played on without a hickup. I only mention this for comparison (that a Windows application can playback in concert with other activity, and shouldn't slow down just because the mouse moves), I'm not suggesting that you'd want Band-In-A-Box as a sequencer program. Its really too bad, since I liked the user interface and feature set of Cubase. If it had been more solid I'd be very tempted to purchase it. I've been using Voyetra's Sequencer Plus under DOS for my sequencing. It is the only thing I've got that will sync to SMPTE off my 4-track. I just got a new Windows driver from Voyetra's bulletin board (my interface card is a Voyetra V-24sm) that should convert incomming SMPTE from my interface to Midi Time Code for Windows applications, and I think Cubase could work with that, but I haven't tried it. Sequencer Plus has been solid, but it wouldn't take much to beat its user interface, even staying with the DOS environment. Anyway, I'd wait for Cubase to go through another release or two before considering it. I got the Cubase demo via ftp after seeing it mentioned in rec.music.makers.synth, but I don't recall which site it was at. Perhaps someone else knows where it is. It seems like I've heard about a demo version of Cakewalk Pro as well. If someone knows where to get that I'd like to know about it. Hi Mark, I'm happy to find someone using a SBPRO with CakeWin. Here's my problem and maybe you can help: This week-end I tried Cakewalk Win 1.0 demo on a PC 486/66 using a SoundBlaster Pro2 card as a MIDI card. All seems to work fine, except a "little" big problem with sysex messages: when I try to receive a sysex message from one of my MIDI gear (Proteus/1, Quadraverb+, U20), I always get a "incomplete sysex" error. When I look at the number of received bytes, there's always one missing, probably F7 or F0 (cos' CakeWin doesn't interprate sysex's content at all). It's always the same repeated problem with any of my music machine. Then I tried to use another MIDI program like MIDI Monitor to look at the incoming informations. Every common MIDI message is received correctly but when I try a sysex dump, nothing is shown by the MIDIMON... So it seems that he cannot receive the first F7 byte at all, and that he's ignoring the rest of the message, till another meaningfull midi message comes on the midi port. Do you know this problem ? Is it a problem with the SBPRO2 win drivers (cos my card works perfectly with simple DOS sysex programs) ? Did I miss something in my windows MIDI drivers installation ? Please help, cos I won't buy a new PC for running a full CakeWin unless I solve this problem (CakeWin sysex facilities is a major reason for me to buy a registered CakeWin). BTW, does anybody know exactly the exhaustive list of improvments in the new CakeWin version ? And is there a demo somewhere ? David. --- David Haubensack e-mail: hbsk@hostsit.cad.cea.fr C.E.A. I have not used my SBPRO for sysex stuff. My Voyetra v24s handles all of this. This implies as in most cases Cakewalk is Ok device driver is Not. Wish I could be of more help. I am not sure of all the improvements in Cakewalk but a major one is printing staff notation. It's always the same repeated > problem with any of my music machine. I had exactly the same problem with Cakewalk for Windows and Sound Blaster Pro card. The solution is quite simple: SB Pro midi drivers are buggy and don't work correctly with sysex tramsmission. I called Twelve Tone Systems Technical Support and they explained it to me. You have to get newer SB Pro Windows drivers. At the moment I cannot tell you exactly what version of the drivers you need. If you wait till friday I will give you more detailed informations about these good drivers. When I installed updated drivers everything started to work correctly and I was able to receive sysex without any problems. Hi all, I'm new to this list and I'm having trouble with my MIDI software. I'm using 'Cubase' on an IBM-pc, 386DX, 25 MHz with a MQX-16S (MPU-compatible) MIDI-interface. The MIDI-software runs under Microsoft Windows 3.1. The interface is set to 30 frames/ second (I don't know if it has anything to do with the problem). I'm working on a MIDI-file that was originally set to 25 frames/ second, but was adjusted later to 30 frames/second. First I write SMPTE-code to the tape. Then, in 386 enhanced mode the output of the pc is not constant, it appears as if the computer can not keep up with the speed of the music. Running Windows in standard-mode sometimes solves the problem, but often the computer crashes at the moment that the SMPTE-code starts. Is this a known problem for this MIDI-interface, software or what? Is it possible to build a good MIDI configuration with a PC, or do you need an Apple or Atari? All reactions are welcome, Jeroen van der Laak ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Jun 1993 08:21:57 CDT From: Mark Borcherding Subject: Re: Cubase problem ... Other info you did not post: How mush RAM in system? What midi device driver and version are you using? I am not surprised Cubase has problems since it was recently ported to windows and will probably not work out bugs completely for another release or two.
