I HIGHLY recommend John Oswald's Plunderphonics, especially to those interested in computer music and sample manipulation. Oswald is one of the only composers I know who can deal with very advanced technique and still create musically exciting and satisfying work. He is tops in the field. I posted this a while ago, but here it is again, for the benefit of anyone interested: Here are some mail excerpts to delight and inform you about that wily Plunderphonics recording (among others). Please exercise appropriate caution with this info; we wouldn't want to provoke an Incident... regards, jhno eichen@trilogy.com (John Eichenseer: Delicate Ear) __________________________________________________ Thus spake ecc@gnu.ai.mit.edu (The Evolution Control Committee): >John Eichenseer is truly a paradigm of adhesion: >> > By sheer coincidence, I got a letter today from Dead Air Productions, >> >an[other] Ohio tape cut-up group (but a great one), who appear to now be >> >the Ohio Chapter of the Copyright Violation Squad. >> >> How are these bands distributing their illegal material? Ok kids, here's the story if you want to get your own copies of John Oswald's _Plunderphonic_, the Negativland _U2_ single, etc. on cassette. The following is lifted from the order form for _YAWN_, "a sporadic newsletter which seeks to offer a critical look at culture in all its forms," and is affiliated with the Tape Beatles, the Copyright Violation Squad, et. al. I don't have time to go into the Tape Beatles/_YAWN_/CVS/_RetroFuturism_ axis, but you'll get plenty of information if you write to them. Anyway, here's the poop: -- Works Offered by the Copyright Violation Squad These are audio works that have been suppressed for violation of copyright. In both [sic] instances, the creators have made illicit use of copyrighted material in the production of new works. CVS makes these works available on a per-request basis at no charge*. You must supply a blank cassette and a self-addressed, sufficiently stamped return mailer. Canada/Mexico: send US currency instead of stamping your mailer. Box 227 Iowa City, IA 52244 -- I sent in a C-90 and a couple of bucks, not having read this (tipped off by someone on the list) to the Tape Beatles, and got back a copy of _Plunderphonic_, flushed out with what I presume is Tape Beatles material. They sent my cassette back in the original mailer along with a photocopy of the _Plunderphonic_ CD insert and an article about Oswald and his persecution by the Canadian recording industry. They also sent me, separately, a catalog from The Drawing Legion, an umbrella organization for CVS, the Tape Beatles, and their buddies. I highly recommend both _Plunderphonic_ and the _U2_ single; I wish I could get CD copies of both, but I didn't hear about _Plunderphonic until after the fact, and wasn't quick enough on the draw when it came to _U2_. Oh well. It available on CD if you know someone at WEA. It also features a cover by the Stern twins, who are very hip NY artists. Also, don't foregt Oswald's commercial releases, which while not as funny are just as interesting. Hay all ! :) Last Sunday while dumping sound banks to my Korg M1 machine some error occured. Patches uploaded into other place I mean into multi Combi mode ???**&&%$.?? And in place of original patch I had a pile of strange characters like OMEGA or thunderflash which do not exist on M1. The voices were totally out of space...First I thought I had destroyed something, but after that next bank worked correctly... For instance in VDA (amplitude amplifier) some parameters were set to 250, 300 and more where maximum is 100. I wonder how can M1 do it. I won't tell you all how it sounded !!! It was totally crazy... On that basis I'm figuring that there can be created many sounds using parameters out of range. I also wonder how did it get those characters like Omega etc. All I know is that these patches were allocated temporarly and after trying to change them they went back to their original range... I would be thankful to hear on this more... The record label Deutch Gramaphonne (sp?) had an LP of Stockhausen's classics Kontakte and Gesang der Junglinge, I'm not sure if it made it to CD. Also I would like to hear Hymnen. Has much of the early electronic music of the 50s through 70s made it to CD? Stuff like Subotnik, Babbitt, Xenakis, Luening, Ussachevsky, Schaeffer, etc. all those guys who pioneered stuff like tape manipulation and new ways of sound synthesis and composition. Do any of you guys on a.m.progressive listen to any of this stuff, or even modern computer and electronic music coming from universities like Stanford or University of Illinois? I find that most of it makes King Crimson and Magma sound like top 40 music in comparison! :) Rob -- Rob Martino _|_ "Do you know how lucky you are you even martino@wpi.wpi.edu | HAVE cereal?...why, when I was your Worcester, Massachusetts | age, we ate wood and rocks!"- Ren John 3:16 ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 30 Oct 1993 20:02:17 GMT From: Adam Neil Villani Subject: Re: Where can I get electronic music on CD In article <2aub3a$21e@bigboote.WPI.EDU>, Robert Paul Martino Jr wrote: >Hello, > >I'm interested in finding out where I might be able to get my hands on >CDs of early electronic music. I've seen some Stockhausen in the Classical section of Tower Records, both here in Pasadena and on Sunset. I don't know what part of the country you live in, though, but I've found the classical section at Tower to be the best in general. > >Has much of the early electronic music of the 50s through 70s made it >to CD? I find that most of it makes King >Crimson and Magma sound like top 40 music in comparison! :) Hear, Hear! You're not exaggerating about how nonm-top-40 this stuff is. I discovered 50's and 60's electronic music in the library here at Caltech; they had a small section with a little Stockhausen, Xenakis, Ussachevsky, etc. Truly bizarre. Intriguing, though, and some of it is actually pleasing to the ear (e.g. Gesang der Junglinge). My guess is that the best place to find this would be on LP at libraries, but that's just a guess. BTW, is anybody else out there into Avant Garde stuff and unimpressed with John Cage's stuff. It's all pretty interesting, but it mostly sounds like crap to me. IMHO, of course. --------------------- Adam Villani addam@cco.caltech.edu "It's nice here with a view of the trees Eating with a spoon, they don't give you knives 'spect you to watch those trees blowing in the breeze They want to see you lead a normal life"---Peter Gabriel, "Lead a Normal Life" -- Disclaimer: Everything I say conforms exactly to Caltech's official position on the subject, whatever it may be. ------------------------------ End of the EMUSIC-L Digest ******************************
