From what I have heard, I would stay well clear. It does not support any powerfull features, like the more modern software packages, and is about as user friendliy as a wet kipper. I write a lot of Techno piano, dance tracks and have found that "CUBASE" and "MIDIPRO" are the best sequencers around. However, when deciding to purchase Calkwalk Pro, I discovered that Calkwalk only triggers wave files. It dosn't sync them to any SMPTE code or anything like that. So the wave file will need to be manipulted, if possible, to keep it close to sync. I believe there are programs that exist to read and write EPS format disks on PC clones, but I don't think they extract the samples into individual files. I use a program written by Terje Finstad (t.g.finstad@fys.uio.no) called EPSm to do this on a Mac. It creates individual sample files which I can edit in Sound Designer or build into new instruments in SampleCell. If you can get access to a Mac, this is a really cool program (thanks, Terje!). You might want to ftp to the EPS list archives to see if anything else is there, I haven't looked recently so I may not be completely up to date on what utilities are available there. I think it is at ftp.reed.edu; at least it used to be. This means that I have to communicate my score in person, bar by bar etc... I would like to write a windows program that allows the user to configure an instrument which will could be then "played" from a standard midi file that I created from my score. There is software out there that would do this for the keyboard or a guitar tuned in the standard tuning but that's as much as I have seen. The first question is does anyone out there have any software that does what I require? If so can it be begged, borrowed or bought? (That implies that I will accept the lowest bid :) ). If the software does not exist, one subsystem that I will need is software to read in a standard midi file. Does anyone have that software? I plan to take care of the windows portion: configuring the instrument, responding to midi commands, etc but of course if someone has something that will work here I am open. I do believe in re-use. BTW C/C++ code is preferred since I will be using MSVC++ compiler. In the pre-midi aera, when I was studying composition, I wrote a composition program in Pascal. Its output was for a sequencer which then controlled our analogue voltage-controlled system. When Midi came up I was able to buy some of the cheaper synths, a cheaper computer, and a cheaper sequencer-program. I ported my composition program and wrote (in pascal) a converter that produced Midi Standard Files which the sequencer could play. Then I could work a lot more at home without using up studioresources. Thus the combination of Pascal- and Midiknowledge was quite fruitful. There is a very good book out there called "Pascal Programming for Music Research" by a guy called Brinkmann, which may give you some clues for writing compositional algorithms. So what do you think? ---------------------------- If you use the Korg to initially record your sequence, the key thing you need to find out is how to get the Korg to play back the sequence through MIDI OUT. You might find you can only get "live" keyboard presses and button pushes to come out. I asked Yamaha about this for my Clavinova and they told me of an unpublished button combination to accomplish this. As for sequencer/notation software, a number of Windows packages now do musical notation but you pay for it. In the UK you are looking at a few hundred pounds, especially if you want something similar to a published score. Take a look at Cubase Score and Finale.
