Got to set the file 'type' to MIDI. I can give you any number of programs capable of doing that. No need to mess with forks. There may well be an application which does just exactly that operation and nothing else, but I disremember where I saw it. --- Joe M. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Jan 1994 10:17:37 +0028 From: Joe McMahon Subject: Re: dos to mac smf >I am writing (in Beta) a program that changes the type and creator of the >file to type'Midi' which is needed for Performer to recognize it. >You just drag the file onto the ICON and it is immediately converted. >Where can I send it (archive site?). BinHex it an mail it to me here at xrjdm@twinpeaks.gsfc.nasa.gov. I'll put it up on the EMUSIC-L ftp site (*temporarily* stjohn.gsfc.nasa.gov, soon to be castrovalva again...). --- Joe M. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Jan 1994 08:22:50 -0500 From: "Jon Crystal (Jon Crystal)" Subject: Re: dos to mac smf >ok, so i save a cakewalk file in standard midi file format 1. drop the disk >into the mac, crank up performer 4.2, and the file load browser won't even >acknowledge its existence. what gives? i thought the format was supposed to >be completely transportable. or does the cakewalk output go into the wrong >damn 'fork' (god, i hate mac file weirdness)? > >-----------< Cognitive Dissonance is a 20th Century Art Form >----------- >Eric Harnden (Ronin) > or >The American University Physics Dept. >4400 Mass. I've had no difficulty moving midi files (*.mid) from PC format to upload in Cubase on my Mac. Only trick is in the File Load menu to specify "MIDI file" or else Cubase ignores it. Good luck. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Jan 1994 08:51:15 EST From: "B. I am writing (in Beta) a program that changes the type and creator of the file to type'Midi' which is needed for Performer to recognize it. You just drag the file onto the ICON and it is immediately converted. Where can I send it (archive site?). BTW, my program will also remap program changes and drum notes from General MIDI to whatever synth you have. You just create the appropriate maps (template provided). The Mac will recognize the file as a text file only until ResEdit or some other prog changes the file type to "Midi." Get a copy of the shareware program called FileTyper from one of the mac archives. It is a really nice program that makes it a breeze to change TYPE and CREATOR codes to allow your "load browser" to see the file. You just start up FileTyper; use the "load browser" to find the smf filename, then click on FileTyper's Get Info button. A popup window shows what TYPE and CREATOR code settings the file currently has. Just type Midi into the TYPE code field and (for Performer) MOUP into the CREATOR code field and click the Change button and it's done! I use Vision on the mac and am pretty sure you need to type those codes just as I've indicated. Midi (capital M, with lower case idi) and MOUP (all upper case). Get FileTyper, it'll save you a lot of grief! Hope this helps!
