One of our members responded in private email to my post about a DIY tape, so I'm answering here. No, I'm not talking about the tape of "YMCA" I threatened. DIY is short for Do It Yourself, and a DIY tape would be all the folks on EMUSIC-L sending in a tape of their compositional and/or performing efforts and somebody with a twin cassette deck and a lot of time on his/her hands putting the songs together and running off copies and mailing them out to everybody, charging a fee that would ensure that he/she doesn't lose too much money in the process. rec.music.makers on Usenet has done something like this in the past, as has ALLMUSIC, and I thought it might be fun to try it out here. I might even be persuaded to buy a dual tape machine to aid the process. What do you say? Anybody want to do this? +-------------------------------+--------------------------------------+ | Rev. The following are first ideas only. Please email me privately (crispen@foxy.boeing.com) with your reactions. I also want co-producers! In return for doing some of the dubbing, you get to make editorial decisions on what gets included, etc. Email me. DEADLINE. August 3, 1994, my wife's birthday. That will give all but the slowest of us the chance to get their ideas into the studio and onto a tape. I'll be sending reminders every couple of weeks or so. Start now! CONTENT. I think I'll set up (the godlike power of my position is making me giddy) a more or less arbitrary limit of 10 minutes per contributor. I'd rather ship tapes that are full of music than leave large blank spaces, so people who send more than 10 minutes may find their extra stuff filling in the blanks. No guarantees, though, and ndividual pieces that run longer than 10 minutes are gonna have to be pretty darn good. We'll attempt to give equal time to every contributor, but if all you send is 30 seconds of music, we're not gonna include it 20 times. QUALITY. I absolutely will not cut, edit or remix music. For all I know, the flutter and dropouts are part of your musical vision. But I may email you and ask you to resubmit if your tape seems to be faulty (e.g., if I can't hear any right channel or the meter never leaves the red). For goodness sakes, listen to your tape before you send it! FORMAT. For now I'll accept tapes on Type II (CrO2) or IV (Metal) cassettes. If you've got an MT120 or something similar, you may send it at double speed (3.75 in/sec). If you absolutely have to send it on DAT, ADAT or VHS Hi-Fi, please email me privately. I'm not sure what I'll master to yet, but I'm intending to buy or borrow a DAT. You'll get copies on Type II or IV cassette, with Dolby B, C or none (your choice). NOISE REDUCTION. Some folks like it, some hate it. I'll follow your wishes, except for the master (in case I have to master to double-speed tape, I'll use noise reduction). Note that I can't take Dolby B or C on double-speed cassettes. I can take dbx, Dolby B or Dolby C on standard-speed cassettes. I can also take submissions without noise reduction. Please mark on your cassettes what noise reduction you used! FINAL PRODUCT. My wild-assed guess is that this will occupy two 90-minute cassettes. I have no reason whatever for believing this. Still, if you send me 2 90-minute cassettes of your favorite brand I will use them to make your copies. Similarly, if you send a mailer that doesn't have a million staples in it and is otherwise easy to recycle, you won't have to pay for a mailer. BOOKLET. I'd like to mail out an 8.5"x5.5" booklet (folded from common-sized American paper). My guess is that others would like to know (a) what you look like, (b) what your studio looks like, (c) what you used to make the song. How 'bout this: we'll give everybody 1/2 page to put whatever (s)he likes on? Art, text, photographs, you name it. Considering that we're going to need some margin for the printing process (probably Xerox) and fold everybody needs to submit a piece of WHITE paper with all printing, etc. in BLACK 3.5" tall and 4.75" wide. COST. I intend to charge no more than this costs me, and I'll customize prices, as I've said. For example, if you've sent me two tapes in a recycleable mailer, then all you'll pay for is the postage and the booklet. If you don't send any tapes, the price will be the booklet plus the tapes plus the mailer plus the postage. In any event, given that I can probably find a good deal on tapes, I can't imagine this costing more than $10. The above has been in the nature of a request for comments, and is NOT final, just an idea. What are your ideas? +-------------------------------+--------------------------------------+ | Rev. The booklet is a great idea and the size restriction is fine. Suggestion: request either a 'photo-ready-and-it-better-be-clean' 3.5" x 4.75" text/artwork/graphic block or text and a photo (if wanted). The photo-ready would be mounted *as is* and the text+[photo] would be retyped using a standard font, cropped and mounted. This way, those who are into artwork could do their own thing, while others who don't have time or the facility to do so, may send text/photo/GIF to be fontified (hey, I like that) and mounted by the booklet coordinators. I would be extremely pleased to assist with this. We can do 600 dpi laser printing 'and for just a dollar more' maybe a full color cover. Fun stuff, I want to help. How's about this gang (and I promise to get in sync tomorrow): Everybody ships a statement something like the following with his/her tape: "I hereby grant to Bob Crispen, his accomplices, and his co-conspirators a one-time license to duplicate the musical composition and its performance contained on this tape for the sole purpose of creating the 1994 EMUSIC-L Compilation tape. I hereby reserve all other rights." For the protection of me and the others, you might also want to sign a statement saying something like: "I hereby certify that all applicable license fees and royalties for the use of others' music and performances which may appear on my submission have been paid, and hold Bob Crispen, his heirs and assigns, and his dog free from all liability for the payment of royalties and judgements resulting from its use in the 1994 EMUSIC-L Compilation Tape. I in turn promise to place on each and every tape the statement: "All rights to the compositions and performances on this tape are retained by the composers and performers of the works. Unauthorized duplication or other use of the material on this tape may be a violation of U.S., foreign, and international laws." Perhaps somebody who knows a lawyer can get the right legalese, but that's clearly our intention: to share what we've done with one another, but not to relinquish any rights over the music that's going to one day make us rich and famous. +-------------------------------+--------------------------------------+ | Rev.
