Dow" Subject: BEAST CONCERT 17th. MAY 1994 "...when groups with scarcely reassuring names like, say, BEAST are around I tend to be somewhere else ..." Gerald Larner, "The Guardian" BEAST will be back in Scotland, though for one day only, with two concerts of spectacular new music and a Ceilidh! Each concert will deploy BEAST's world-famous multi-channel loudspeaker array, designed to envelop the listener in high-quality sound and bring the dynamic range, the sense of space and the sheer physical drama of the music to the audience. The concerts will present a range of pieces in a variety of musical styles which characterise this most exciting of art-forms. The lunchtime concert is a rare chance to hear one of the founder members of the cult band Lost Jockey, John Wesley-Barker, playing three new works for flute and tape. Wesley-Barker, a leading Midlands figure in new music performance, specialises in the realisation of works for tape, electronics and instruments as soloist, conductor and composer. The evening concert features a new work by the prize-winning young English composer Adrian Moore. This work, which exploits the most recent innovations in computer technology, will be performed by EdinburghUs Contemporary Music Ensemble, who welcome back composer Jeremy Cull as conductor. Several prize-winning compositions will be featured in the evening event, including "... et ainsi de suite ..." by the director of BEAST, Jonty Harrison. This work, awarded a Distinction in the Austrian Prix Ars Electronica 1992 has, with the Euphonie dUor winning "Klang", received wide acclaim throughout Europe. The Caledonian Ceilidh Band will take over from BEAST from 10pm - 1am to round off the evening in a traditional Scottish fashion, during which time the Bar will be open! THE PROBLEM: According to information posted in several Clarinet newsgroups, a new and dangerous trojan is showing up at publicly-accessible Internet sites. This trojan, called CD-IT.ZIP, supposedly gives your PC full read/write capabilities on its CD-ROM drive. The CD-IT documentation states the program was authored by Joseph S. Shiner, couriered by HDA and copyrighted by Chinon Products. The problem came to light when a user who had downloaded the file from a FidoNet server in Baltimore, MD, realized that it is IMPOSSIBLE to make a standard CD-ROM drive writable with a small software utility and reported it to Chinon. Other suspicious indicators were obscenities in the documentation and a line indicating that HDA stands for "Haven't Decided a Name Yet." In a statement to Newsbytes, Chinon America stated it has no division as named in the documentation. Chinon engineers also report that if CD-IT is actually run, it locks up the computer; it will then remain in memory (even after reboot) and will corrupt critical system files on the hard disk as well as any available network volumes. Chinon's R&D Director stated that he has not heard of any systems that have (yet) been affected by this trojan. THE FIX: Although there is no real "fix" for a trojan or virus, there are two important points NASIRC wishes to make: 1) DO NOT DOWNLOAD THE FILE "CD-IT.ZIP" FROM ANY ON-LINE ARCHIVES! 2) DO NOT RUN THE "CD-IT" UTILITY! Once a system is infected, the only way to eradicate the virus is to perform a high-level reformat of the hard drive! To quote the Clarinet post, "Chinon is encouraging anyone who might have information that could lead to the arrest and prosecution of the parties responsible for CD-IT to call the company at 310-533-0274. In addition, the company has notified the major distributors of virus protection software, such as Symantec and McAfee Associates, so they may update their programs to detect and eradicate CD-IT. NASIRC will continue to monitor this situation and will post additional information should it become necessary. Hear is a useful program for those of you who have a PC and are lacking in the polyphony department. I just got to see a sneak preview of a program called MIDI Renderer. We used some of my MIDI files and "rendered" 16-bit stereo performances with the 200MB library of samples that come with it. Sounded better than my rig, i must say. And for us MAC people, i've been promised a release by sometime next year. Anyhow, it's a really nifty piece of software, if only to generate tracks for HD recording or something. I am not associated with the makers, i just used to work with the owners wife, but here's the press release they gave me: ----------------- Contact: Tricia Garcia DiAcoustics 555 Sparkman Drive Suite 600-F Huntsville, AL 35816 (205) 722-0490 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE NEW MULTIMEDIA SOFTWARE PRODUCT DESIGNED TO PRODUCE WAVETABLE SOUND ON EXISTING AUDIO CARDS Huntsville -- DIACOUSTICS will release at COMDEX/Spring'94 its latest multimedia solution: MIDI Renderer. This is the first commercially available product to allow users to create digital WAV files from any MIDI music file. MIDI Renderer is a user modifiable software synthesizer capable of producing CD quality digital music on existing audio cards without any hardware upgrades. MIDI Renderer is an economical alternative to buying a new wavetable sound card. Using our software on any existing audio card (FM, non-FM or even wavetable based) the user can produce sound that outperforms wavetable sound cards. Not only is the resulting sound quality improved, but also this product offers more user choices than any current sound card. With MIDI Renderer the user can have 128 simultaneous notes, which can each be assigned to a different instrument if desired. The result is full orchestra capability. MIDI Renderer comes with a set of standard defaults that require no adjustments for achieving outstanding performance. But for those users who ask "What if?", it also offers many user modifiable features. These advanced features allow the creation of new instruments using different synthesis techniques such as sampling, additive synthesis, wave sequencing, and frequency modulation. Even the most demanding user will be pleased. Anyone using an FM based sound card will greatly benefit from this product. MIDI Renderer will have a list price of $129, and will be available at a special introductory price of $69.95 until August 31st. DIACOUSTICS will be showcasing this product at COMDEX/Spring94 booth M4341. MIDI Renderer can be ordered by calling 1-800-365-6134. Shipping will start May 23, in CD-ROM media for OS/2, Windows, and DOS platforms. Thanks!) Summer Academy at Ircam 27 June to 2 July 1994 The success of Ircam's first Summer Academy, organized during the summer of 1993, demonstrated the need for a structure capable of welcoming musicians who wish to come into contact with new technologies. A hundred participants from 25 countries were able, over a week, to take advantage of a varied schedule of multidisciplinary encounters. The interest generated encourages us to repeat the experiment this year. The Summer Academy offers an intensive timetable. This year, each day will be made up of composition classes (with the two guest composers, Michael Jarrell and Jean-Claude Risset, in the morning, and with lecturers, in the afternoon), performance classes (on digital keyboards - synthesizers - and the MIDI flute, in the afternoon), research and technology courses later in the afternnon, and beginners classes in computing, for the non-professionals. Concerts and workshops will take place each evening. The Summer Academy is intended for the entire musical community (at beginner and advanced levels): composers, instrumentalists, musicologists, as well as for scientists attracted by the artistic dimension. All classes, presentations and concerts will take place at the premises of Ircam and the Centre Georges-Pompidou, in the center of Paris. Language Classes will be conducted in French. For the group classes, simultaneous translation into English will be provided by interpreters present in the room. Cost: 1500 French Francs This sum includes access to the classes and workshops, as well as to the evening events and concerts of the Summer Academy.
