Does anyone out there know an FTP site where I can find a version of the Cmusic program for Mac. I found a PC version, but don't really want to spend the next 6 months converting it. For those that don't know, Cmusic is a sound-generation program that would only be used by us old fogeys who grew up on mainframes instead of synthesizers. It It is usually available in a sourcecode form. Regards to all. If you ran under system 3.2, Csnd.app would crash when you tried to create a new orc or sco file. I think it is fixed (although I don't have access to a 3.2 machine). The other one was quite obscure, but bothersome to me. The latest version of Csnd.app (v1.1b) is available by anonymous ftp from the following sites: ftp.cs.orst.edu:/pub/next/binaries/sound/Csnd.app.v1.1b.tar.Z ftp.cs.orst.edu:/pub/next/binaries/sound/Csnd.app.v1.1.b.README and nova.cc.purdue.edu:/pub/next/submissions/Csnd.app.v1.1b* Please send bugs and suggestions to me directly. Many thanks to those who steered me in the right direction. For the record, it's located at cecelia.media.mit.edu in the /pub/Csound directory. A few people were curious about what this program does, so here is a very brief tuturial. Csound is a very powerful and frustrating sound generation program. If you've heard of Music11 or MusicIV, this is the same sort of program. You design instruments using an quasi-programming language, and then write a list event (the score) to be processed by your instruments. Eventually, you get a file that can be played on an AudioMediaII card (or as AIFF files, if your computer can play AIFF). There are essentially no limits to the number of filters or oscillators your instruments can have. You You might find there are limits to your patience, since even a powerful computer can spend hours generating the sounds. A program like Csound is best used by someone who has a firm understanding of acoustics as well as a decent computer. It's also good if you've got something interesting to do while your computer crunches. The Macintosh version is only barely Mac-like. All the user interface does is pass a few parameters into a program that has a heart of Unix. You can also modify the source code (if you're a decent programmer) to run under DOS. The user interface problems are simpler since DOS doesn't have one. Again, thanks for helping me find the program. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 May 1994 11:18:27 EDT From: Joe McMahon Subject: Re: Csound for the PowerMac I'm forwarding this message from the comp.music Usenet newsgroup.
