I'm looking into going on to grad school in composition. The problem is, I'm unsure as to where the best programs are (and also where the most financial assistance is available). I'm not heavy into the experimentalist avant-garde, but I have some background in it and use it occasionally (this might influence the suggestions you give). If anyone could give me some ideas about which schools I might want to look at, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Just to get in you're probably going to have to submit a number of scores that demonstrate that you can write that kind of cra-, I mean music. And then there's no guarantee that they won't cut your funding if you ever try to veer away from it. My guess is that William Bolcom at the U. of Michigan is the most likely to be liberal-minded about what style you write in. He writes in all different styles, even within one piece. But again, there's no guarantee that he'll let you do the same. Lots of luck! There are two places to find guitar chords/tab on the internet (that I'm aware of...if there are more, please let me know!). Both are FTP sites. The two addresses are: (in the order you should check) ftp.nevada.edu and ftp.uwp.edu. In both places go to the directory /pub and look for something about music (at uwp the exact directory is /pub/music/guitar but I'm not sure about the nevada one). I hope this helps. I need some books on sampling techniques. especially for the AKAI 950. I would to see a book on how to make flawless loops. THe manual does'nt help in explaining some to the numbers when sampling. I understand about milliseconds, but there is this other number you run into when you get ready to loop. Let me know it u or any of your friends can shed some light on this. Peace, Love and Soul. They have nothing to do with MIDI, and it shouldn't matter. What works well for an orchestra will work well with a good sample set. Rimsky-Korsekov and Hindemith have books on orchestration. SO is the Don Sebesky book on arranging. jr ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 May 1994 15:55:39 -0500 From: Joe McMahon Subject: Sampler plans Maciej Bartkowiak has very kindly uploaded his sampler plans to the stjohn.gsfc.nasa.gov anonymous FTP site. At present they are in Corel Draw and HPGL; I am looking into getting them translated into a more "Mac-friendly" format for those Mac users who were interested. I have a program to make EPS files out of them, but am not sure it's working properly. At any rat, the files are there, and I hope those who were interested can use them. It looks very interesting indeed. (An aside to Maciej: I made some minor grammatical changes as you requested. There wasn't much that needed to be changed.
