RETCH! We get the message...take it to the synth list, because "money IS an object" here.<< Jaydawg's response: Thank you for your smart azz ignorant remark. I see that you don't understand the concept of searching for knowlegde everywhere information exists. This list is made up of talented musicians who want to share and recieve their knowledge of music know-how with others. As the poet once said, stupidity and ignorance are as plentiful as Coca-Cola. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 Jun 1994 10:49:17 -0500 From: Joe McMahon Subject: Re: Jaydawg's response to HFPH haeckerh Jaydawg, it is a policy of this mailing list (among others): 1) To not post ads. 2) To treat others in a civil manner. Anyone repeatedly violating the guidelines will be removed. The letter you got when you subscribed *was* a form letter, but it does explain these items. I will repost the EMUSIC-L guidelines here. I refer in the case of your response to Harry H. to points 1 and 3. I think that you might have said something on the order of "I beg your pardon, but since when are you not allowed to post ads on this list?". And it would have been far more polite to say it privately. ---------------------------- This is the semi-regular "rules and regulations" post. Just a quick outline of the canons of behavior that have evolved over the years of EMUSIC-L's existence. The basic thrust of EMUSIC-L is to provide a forum for the discussion of music made by electronic means. The actual means is secondary. What we are concerned with is the music, composing, and related topics. Therefore: 1) Ads are not permitted. Advising someone as to whether they are getting ripped off *if they ask the list* is permissible; otherwise, use private mail. Requests for addresses of mail-order firms, etc. are OK. Cutting deals on your own personal equipment is not OK. If you must, do it privately, or subscribe to SYNTH-L, where you'll reach a more responsive audience. Prices really aren't so much of interest unless either the entire world (literally) should know about this great deal, or you have inside information on a new product or upgrade. Exception: if someone has gone through the trouble of composing, recording, and pressing a CD or tape, submitting an article describing the process and their experiences and mentioning that the tape or CD is available for purchase is OK. Posting repeated ads for the CD is not. (A 1-line mention in a signature file is permissible.) 2) Discussions as to the relative merits of hardware/software/etc. are permissible, as long as the reviewers state evidence supporting their opinions. Ad hominem attacks will not be tolerated. Arguments based solely on personal taste are not acceptable. It is preferable to request private mailings, which you can summarize and post back to the list. Reviews are useful. Mutual admiration societies are not. 3) All members *will* be treated with kindness and respect. There is no such thing as a dumb question on this list. If you can answer, answer, and be nice about it. Otherwise, say nothing. If you've got a problem with what someone has had to say, discuss it in a civil manner. If you can't do that, take it to e-mail, or just forget about it. 4) EMUSIC-L is meant to be for the discussion of electronic music, in the studio, the classroom, in performance, and on recordings, including techniques, resources, user reviews and experiences, and speculation on futures. Some divagations will be tolerated; however, the list owner (me) maintains final say as to the subject matter on the list and will move to terminate off-topic, pointless, and (especially) rancorous discussions. 5) Please refrain from adding to the noise level by commenting about accidental private posts to the list or the accidental sendings of SUBSCRIBE requests or suchlike to the list. That's my job. If you must pour out your wounded feelings ;-), either to me or to the offender, use private mail. 6) The listowner (namely me) is permitted to be as arbitrary as he or she pleases. I've never had to take action against a member of the list for breaking these rules, even when they hadn't been stated. I will notify offenders via private mail and I will wait for a response. But I don't have time to play Politeness and Germaneness Monitor. I will cut feeds and remove users from the list only if I must. But be assured that I will to preserve the quality of discussion on this list. If you have problems with any of this, talk to me privately. Now, let's get back to e-music! --- Joe M. -- "Will somebody get the cat off the fender Rhodes?" Synth-L provides a suitable forum for ads of all kinds (music). There is really no need for them on both lists, since many people subscribe or at least read both. Is it against the law, against this listserve ettiquette? Well, you must have missed my post of the emusic-l guidelines the other day. I'll mail them to you privately, but one of them *is* "no ads". Why? Because ads have this tendency to crowd out all other useful discussion. > I would like to know if someone wants to sell something so that I >get a shot at buying it. In my mind, this is a neat way to use the >internet -- exchanging ideas -- exchanging products.... Sure. And there's any number of other places to do that. If you get Usenet news, there's rec.music.makers.marketplace; if you don't there's SYNTH-L@AUVM.AMERICAN.EDU, also managed by yours truly, which welcome ads. > Does anyone have a vote out there? Can we vote on something like >putting >items up for sale? No. We can't. :) I make the rules and that's one. This is a benign dictatorship. Sorry. As I noted, there are other places to go. We'll also take blank cheques, money orders and all major credit cards. Several of the young whippersnapper comrades (the ones with curious personal habits) have displayed an unhealthy interest in this caning idea, Joe. At the risk of bringing the discussion back to emusic, they propose to develop the velocity- and touch-sensitive MIDICane. The question of aftertouch remains, as always, a sensitive issue. I have suggested they continue this discussion by private email, preferably in a plain brown envelope.
