THis is my first day on the list, and I noticed a few messages about PC's vs MAC's. Being a network admin at a college which uses only PC's, I will not get into that discussion, except to say that from ther ads Iv'e seen over the years in the rags, MAC's are the way to go for MIDI, as far as I can tell. But alas, I do not have that luxury! I have a 486 DX2 66 with 16 MB RAM, VL Bus video and SCSI host adapter, and a Midi Quest 2 port Midi interface (MQ32M)? hooked up through an AKAI Midi patch bay to a SY-22, 3MR, Wavestation A/D, R8-M, S900. I'm running Cakewalk Pro for Windoze, version 2.01 as my "engine". I would gladly accept any advice as to which editor/librarian software to check out for this setup. Here's my story: I live in the Netherlands. About 3 years ago I bought Performer 3.5 for my Mac SE/30 by mail order in the USA. >From then on I automatically received all updates free from MOTU. One day I decided to switch to Digital Performer (I had in mind to use harddisk recording). I discovered that harddisk recording at that time was not possible with my SE/30 (no NUBUS slot). I wrote to MOTU and they replaced Digital Performer with Performer 3.6 free and gave me also Unisyn (universal editor/librarian) for free, because Digital Performer costs more then Performer. I only had to pay the shipping costs. From then on I received automatically all updates (last one 4.2) free and always with the necessary manuals. Six months ago I bought a Mac 660AV and from then on I had trouble with Performer 4.2 on this machine. I had intensive e-mail contact with their PR-man Neal Lischner about my difficulties, but at MOTU they didn't manage to solve my problems. Then due to the workload at MOTU because of the release of version 5.0, Neal failed to answer my questions for about two weeks. They apologized for the inconveniences and guess what: they offered me Mac-AV compatible Performer 5.0, FreeMIDI and UNISYN for free (again!). Within one week I received the package (no shipping costs for me) and until now Performer, FreeMIDI and UNISYN work fine (I won't say great, because there are still some minor problems). Needless to say that I'm overwhelmed by the customer friendliness and generosity of MOTU! (I think they did send me for free products worth at least $1000) Sjoerd Bijleveld P.S. I am helping a group of students that want to design and implement a computer application that will permit the development of music using computers and a keyboard. Of course we know there are a lot of programs for this topic, but our goal is the development of this tool as a way to enhance the programming skills of the students. This will be their senior year project. They want to write the programs in Microsoft Visual C++ (for Windows), and they have a keyboard Roland E16 and a Sound Blaster 16 ASP soundcard. This card has a joystick and MIDI plug, where the link beteewn computer and keyboard will be done. Reading the documentation of the card, we learn that a MIDI Kit from Creative Labs will be needed in order to connect the two devices (keyboard and soundcard). The documentation of the keyboard does not inform the format of MIDI messages, and how to send and receive them. The documentation of the Sound Blaster card also does not explain what is the format of the messages, on- ly says that there are some interrupts to be used, in order to program the card and connect it to the keyboard. So we need help, because we do not find any information about the MIDI file format, the format of messages sent to and received from the keyboard through its MIDI port, and how to sincronize the communication beteewn the computer and keyboard. Can someone help us? Where can we find those informations? Is there any ftp sites with them, or any books? If someone knows something about MIDI programming, please contact us in the electronic addresses below: chico@ccsun.unicamp.br cotuca@ccvax.unicamp.br Thanks in advance, Francisco da Fonseca Rodrigues -----------------------=====================================----the stars,---- | ._, | Francisco da Fonseca Rodrigues | o o | | ,_| |._/\ | | o o | | | |o/^^~-._ | COTUCA-Colegio Tecnico da UNICAMP | o | |/-' BRASIL | ~| | o o o | |\__/|_ /' | Depto de Processamento de Dados | o o o o | | \__ Cps | . | | o o o o | | | * __/' | InterNet : chico@ccsun.unicamp.br | o o o | | > /' | cotuca@ccvax.unicamp.br | o | | /' /' | Fone/Fax : 55-0192-32-9519 | o o | | ~~^\/' | Campinas - SP - Brasil | o o | -----------------------=====================================----like dust.---- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Jun 1994 03:00:42 -10752 From: Brian Copeland Subject: Re: MIDI programming on a PC and MIDI file format Lots of literature exist on the MIDI format. I started to tear apart MODs and get to their native .snd and such, and it would appear to me that these are the "voices" which are driven by sequences which are then pasted together to form songs. I would very much like to do this (if my inkling is right). I have a 486/66 with loads of RAM and HD space. I have access to multiple keyboards for triggering devices but have no idea how I could use sounds (i.e. *.snd, *.wav, *.au, etc) from my computer as voices. I realize that I would need hardware cards and cables and software,. but what I really want to know is if I can make the equivalent of a MOD on my system. I would like to take a native sound and trigger it with a keyboardto create sequences which I would then link into songs, etc. Am I even in the ballpark with this? Is this possible or are you locked into pre-programmed voices such as are on an MT-32? ANY help on this subject is greatly appreciated . Thanks for taking the time to read, and I appologize if this is not the place for a newbie to ask questions like this... ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 Jun 1994 07:28:07 GMT From: SCOTT MORSCHHAUSER Subject: Notation Software Date: 06/01/94 From: SCOTT MORSCHHAUSER OU59105 - DACDXX21 To: EMUSICL - SSAUTORG Subject: Notation Software Reference: Your note of 05/31/94 18:07 attached below ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >Does anyone out there know of ANY program in FTP world that >can take a MIDI file and print the music as a score? If your needs are not so elaborate you might find the PowerTracks Pro package may meet your requirements. This is a Windows sequencing program from the people who make Band-In-A-Box, and it only costs $29 (plus $5 for shipping/handling). I have found it to be a reasonably capable sequencer, and it will print your tracks as notation (one track at a time) on whatever printer your Windows installation has (well, I haven't tested it on any printer other than my HPLJIIP with the HP Postscript cartridge, but it is supposed to work). It prints out a good enough notation for me to give to my friend who plays sax, and I can transpose it properly (can't recall if it is 3 steps up or down right now) for him to read directly (without transposing in his head). It isn't a professional score printing program by any means (nor does it claim to be), and I'm sure someone with a more critical eye could find plenty of shortcomings with it, but it suits my needs (at least so far), and it comes with a nice sequencer package to boot :-) You had mentioned retrieving your music from the screen, and I'm not sure exactly what you mean by that (does Winjammer print musical notation on the screen but not to a printer?), but if you can save your Winjammer sequences to a .MID file PowerTracks Pro can read that and you can print your tracks from it (or display it on the screen as notation). You may even find that you could just sequence and print with PowerTracks Pro (I have never used Winjammer, so I have no idea how they may compare). If you want to get PTP you could grab a copy of Keyboard magazine (probably Electronic Musician, or others as well) and find the add for Band-In-A-Box. I seem to recall that most recent issues had a two page add for BIAB, PTP and other software, along with an 800 number for placing orders.
