James, You would want to choose an amplifier that matches your speakers. For example if you have a pair of Tannoy PBM8 speakers, I would recommend the Hafler Pro2400 (street price $500). Make sure your amp can deliver atleast the rated power of your speakers. Wimpy amps driven hard will clip and will burn out your tweeters. This happens very often. Last year I had done a thorough study and market research on getting the best set of main speakers and power amps for my home studio. This was not for near field monitoring but rather to entertain friends. I listened to all the Tannoys, JBLs, Infinities, Bose, B&W, Keffs, Genelic, and finally settled on a pair of Mirage M-3Sis as my main speakers. They are bipolar towers and create the smoothest sound space with the tightest bass and clearest treble I have ever heard at this price range ($3000/pr list). Once I decided on the speaker, I had to try out all the available amplifiers that mated best with this. I found the Hafler 9300 to be the best match. The Hafler 9500 seemed a shade better, but the sonic improvement was not worth the price differential to me. I am very very satisfied with the Mirage M-3Si/Hafler 9300 combination. So to answer your question, first decide on the speaker, and then choose the amp. My experience tells me you cant go wrong with Hafler. Besides it carries that 7 year warranty! Good luck, Tapas Das. > > If anyone can recommend a good amplifier to a recording system, I would > be most thankful for any suggestions.
