For those of you who don't remember, the first Trans-X album set the standard for Hi-NRG when it was released in the early 80s. Since that time, Pascal Languirand relapsed into a New Age (read that Zap) mode of composition which led to 'Gregorian Waves'. I have been working on convincing him to give Hi-NRG another shot (in collaboration with me). Maybe this summer... It is not essentially a list about hardware or software developments (the emusic list does that very well). The apparent need for this list arose out of designing and running a PGDip/MA course in Electro-Acoustic Music for Film & Television. Attempts to locate serious information about the aesthetics of film and television music revealed that relatively little has been published in these areas (the Library of Congress lists only 150 books at most, and several of these are reprints). The list, therefore, has as one of its goals the encouragement of serious discussion of the above topics, and the possibility of Networked publication. Also some info on how to interpet the numbers when u are creating a loop. U see, my problem with this unit is the trial and error of making a sample loop. For example, I was trying to loop some old Ice Cube, I got my sample's end and begining kinda like i wanted it,but trying to get a smooth loop that will last 1 measure is real task. I can get it to loop like I want, but it is just the trial and error I don't like. Is there a better way. Peace LO VE & Soul. P.S. Go see Crooklyn. It's great. Answer : 3.Yes You can talk real time. There is talk for unix, chat for VM (bitnet). BUt use IRC - internet relay chat. It's a program (client) that allows to talk real time with many users. There are channels like on a CB radio there, and You can make Your own channles. Usually there are from 2000-3000 people from all over the world on it. All You need is a client, (typical for Your system) and You connect to a server and that's it. The song was written by Bernie Taupin (Elton John's old lyricist) and is sung by Nancy (rather than Ann who sings most of the leads). I don't recall the name of the album it is on, but it isn't their most recent (Black on Black). I think it is on the previous one. The circuit was basically just an FET op-amp with open loop gain and a low pass filter. The circuit could detect movement of hands, legs and nearby bodies due to their electrostatic potential. Could make a good theramin type controller from one of these. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Andy Farnell, Music Technology Research Computing and Cognition Dept. These things send out bursts of ultrasonic sounds and measure hte time they need to travel to a reflecting surface and back again. According to one of several selectable programs they convert the distance-information into some MIDI-events. They need great care in positioning especially if you use more than one device, as they tend to interfere with each other, what you can get as MIDI-Info is quite limited etc. For motion detection I made good experience with a Canadian System named GAMS which is much more reliable, is capable of doing 3D detection and you may define any MIDI event, even sequences of them as a reaction of any change of position, velocity, acceleration in any of the three spatial dimensions. You might as well subdivide the performance space into regions which react differently than others. This system also works with ultrasonic soundbursts generated by a processor and distributed via 4 loudspeakers. These bursts are caught by a microphone held by the performer and transmitted back to the processor via an FM- transmitter. As each of the 4 speakers emits its bursts with a different fre- quency, the processor is able to calculate the different runtimes and thus the distance of the microphone to each speaker and thus the position and the movements of the person isn space. If anyone needs more info as about where to get this stuff, feel free to contact me. Hello once again, I'd like to personally thank those who responded to my previous message concerning using (General) MIDI to create a course. The information I've been provided has been of great boon to me. I just have another question: Is there any FTP site or location on the InterNet which would have any syllabuses that relate to this topic. I'm just needing to take a look at them to get an idea of how to set up this independant study into a course. I'm finding it a bit difficult since mostly what I do with computers is programming, and running software for myself. I've never been in a situation where I had to create or teach something of this nature as a course. Any help and/or advice would be greatly appreicated.
