A spacial model of sound has been proposed to give a framework for user defined abstract sound manipulations. Ultimately this should lead to a powerful and general new paradigm for synthesiser programming. One important step is to now validate some aspects of the model by effectively building a map of 'timbre space'. Because of the large sample size required, and the type of subjects needed the internet community is an ideal laboratory for these studies. To help design the source data and its delivery method we need to obtain as much information, in respect of background and available resources, about potential subjects as possible. Who does this apply to: If you are involved in any way in using synthesisers, even if you don't program your own patches then you can help. Ideally a little knowledge of musical instruments would help. Internet access is needed, but since you are reading this I shall make that assumption. You must also have some way of listening to samples, but the details of this are not specific yet. What you could offer: You will have to listen to sounds. Possibly quite a few. Some boxes need marking on a standard form and emailing back to me. Thats it. Obviously the more time you can spare the better, the more sounds you can audition and the larger our sample will be, but every little bit helps. What you get out of it: $1000/hour. Not a chance. Perhaps the thought that synthesisers can be made easier to use and you will benefit from this is a motivation. I wish I could offer you more but you know the score. Of course you can keep all the samples :-). What to do: Forward this to anyone you know, not on the main lists, who might be interested. At present we need everyone who has an interest, or thinks they might have a contribution to make, to email me at the below address. (not back to EMUSIC-L or Joe will kill me). I will build a file of potential participants to use later. This is not a commitment to take part, just an acknowledgement of interest. The sort of information I could use is: A couple of lines about your background and work. A breif list of platforms you have available - ie. mac/hypercard, sun, HP, SG indie, Roland/Yamaha/EMU samplers DAT, soundtools, sadie, cubase audio etc. What I am looking for here is a way in which you could audition the sounds, and a pathway from internet to ear, so mention any file format translation software you have and your preferred format. Also any un-compression utilites you have like unix-tar, pkunzip, binhex etc. There is no deadline yet. I will decide on the format as soon as enough replies are gathered to make the decision. Thanks for reading, more will follow another time. andy. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Andy Farnell, Music Technology Research Computing and Cognition Dept. I am in the same boat as you; I have talked to several Kurzweil people about this and they have not and will not be releasing the .KRZ format. Further more, no one has busted the code and released the format publicly to my knowledge. I have talked to the president of the K2000 Owners Group (KOG) and checked all of the FTP sites, but nothing is available. The people that have editors out do NOT use the .KRZ format for editing from my understanding (although I don't have any of them). If someone wanted to take the *TIME*, it is possible to do, but I am not the one with that time. I would suggest taking your question over to the K2000 mailing list. The people there will be *MUCH* more knowledgable and helpful. IF you find additional information, please let me know. Good luck! I am not a > programmer, but I have been told that the program I have in > mind could be written in C in a couple of hours. Thanks, BW > Bill, I was intrigued by your post searching for a programmer to write a tempo measurement program. I am a programmer (primarily C) and a musician but unfortunately I don't have access to a Macintosh, so I'm afraid I can't be much help. However, I wanted to pass along my thoughts on how such a program might be written. A word of warning: this sounds like an ambitious project and one that might take significantly more time than a couple of hours. I can think of two methods for extracting tempo from digitized music. The first would be to monitor the amplitude or "volume" of the program material. Any sudden changes would be interpreted as beats. However, long legato passages or sustained chords such as from an organ or string section would present problems with this method. The second would be to monitor frequency or "pitch". Again any sudden change would be interpreted as a beat. Here the method would be thrown off by passages that hold the same note for long periods. Also slide notes such as from a trombone or sounds from percussion instruments which contain many frequencies would cause problems. In both cases the measurement would have to be limited to a section of the music where "meter" notes are being played exclusively, i.e. quarter notes in 4/4 time, eighth notes in 6/8, etc. Unless the music you are interested in measuring is marches this might be difficult. Also it would be helpful to limit the section of music to one in which a single monophonic instrument is playing to eliminate the problems introduced by the slight misalignment of two instruments in time. Finally all this limiting of the program material would ultimately hinder the accuracy of the results because an average should be taken over a long period to reduce the effect of any variations in the tempo or errors in the measurement. I hope this is helpful. I would be interested to see the specific requirements you mentioned in your post. Good luck and let me know how you make out.
