I don't know if this was discussed in the recent Mac DSP thread, but is there a version of Cmusic that can operate in real-time utilizing either one of the DSPs commong in AV MAcs or the speed of the Powermacs? -- Arne F. I am having a lot of trouble. I have been using TRAX software with little or no success. I was told by PASSPORT (Developers of TRAX) that I should not have any screen savers on (I turned it off). I tried again after reinstalling the software but was unable to get anything out of the Miracle piano. Before I turned off the screen saver I was at least able to get some sounds out (albeit rather strange and moderately correlated to what I expected). There was also the issue of using Apple's MIDI driver vs the Trax driver. I couldn't get the Apple MIDI driver to work at all, but the TRAX driver produced some results. Another symptom: I was able to play something on the Miracle to be recorded, and it apparently was recorded (the notes appeared in the window) but I was totally unable to play it back. I was able to play back some caned MIDI files I had, but not what I recorded. The only thing that I can think of is that 1. Some of my inits or exts are causing problems (which I doubt since it didn't work with everything off), 2. or that there needs to be a file that configures TRAX for the Miracle, 3.??? Any ideas? regards, Chuck Summers csummers@bnr.ca ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Aug 1994 10:58:20 -0500 From: Joe McMahon Subject: Re: Macintosh and MIDI - with Miracle Piano >Hi, > >I am attempting to control a Miracle piano with a MIDI interface on a MAC >LCIII. >I am having a lot of trouble. > Question: Does TRAX support MIDI Manager? If so, you may want to get hold of a copy (both the Band-in-a-Box demo and the Lime demo provide a copy). There's a distinct possibility that you are having trouble with the 'built-in' MIDI drivers. --- Joe M. -- "First up, it's John Tesh, with 'Whispering Firestorm', followed by Yanni and his 'Snoremaster of Tralfamadore.'" I looked at the signals from the MAC and going to the piano with a scope and they looked ok to me. I assume (from the schematic) that MIDI is a differentially driven signal (+ on one wire, - on the other) to eliminate noise problems. I don't know what kind of timing spec to expect however. Is there someplace that I can download/get the electrical spec for MIDI? How about a book describing the electrical characteristics? regards, Chuck Summers csummers@bnr.ca ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Aug 1994 12:35:03 -0400 From: Nicholas J Patterson Subject: Sample Editing for Mac Once again a request for this group's expertise -- Could anyone recommend sample editing software for the Mac? I have a 660 AV and an Emax (original, not Emax II). I'm considering Alchemy, because it's supposed to work with Emax via RS-422 cable, speeding up sample transfer. However, I've heard there may be problems regarding compatibility with SCSI manager 4.3. Could anyone post/e-mail me their setup if it's working well for you, especially you Emax users? But please, nothing that requires Digidesign cards... Thanks in advance.... ================== Nick Patterson / Columbia University Music Library ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Aug 1994 10:31:00 -0700 From: Scott Hessel Subject: Re: Sample Editing for Mac >Once again a request for this group's expertise -- > >Could anyone recommend sample editing software for the Mac? As you mention, the RS-422 cable is the preferred method of transfer. If you are doing mega-samples, waiting for the sample dump via RS-422 can be a little trying, but it sure beats MIDI. Once I got all the usual bugs worked out, the Alchemy/Emax II partnership has worked just fine. It probably does clash with SCSI Manager 4.3. So be it; another reason to get off the careering featuritis-driven upgrade bandwagon. All three of my slow, obsolete Macs run System 7.0.1 and I don't see that changing anytime soon. Passport has officially released Alchemy again and it's available. They also claim that it's a new version, but i haven't heard if that means anything aside from new and improved nifty color menus or some crap like that. -- Arne F.
