Hi, As I said before in my last query, I have a Kawai PH50. It is basically a K1 without the ability to program. However, it does have 30 'forms' that allow various combinations of the sounds and keyboard splits (e.g. Analog Synth patch on the upper part of the keyboard, Bowed String and Horn 1 layered together on the lower part of the keyboard). Individual instrument volume is also controllable. There are 50 memory locations to store these various combinations. So much for the background. My problem is trying to remember what I put where, and with what patch, and at what volume. There are many shareware patch editors for sysex-type synthesizers, but all I really need to do is have a program remember the various settings, then (ideally at the touch of a button) send all the program change messages, volume messages, etc. to the synthesizer. I suppose I could have my sequencer software do this, with a separate midi file for each setting, with no data (only control messages), and 'play' the file to set the synth up. But this is rather brutal. Any suggestions out there? As an added incentive, with all the talk about Shepard tones, I found a midi file on xcf.berkeley.edu that is supposed to demonstrate them. I haven't tried it yet, but here is is for your enjoyment. Thanks again, Andrew Sharpe begin 644 shepard.mid M351H9 8 0 " 'A-5')K &0#_60( #_40,))\ _U@$! When the ACI is enabled by Cubase's SYNC button, Windows will crash at some point in time later. Usually when I tell Cubase to close a file. If someone else out there has seen this type of problem using either Cubase, Steinberg-ACI or the MOTU Midi-Express, (which is my current setup), please let me know if you've solved it and what I could do to fix the problem. I've contacted Steinberg Jones twice about this problem and one person from their technical support group told me that this is a known problem and it is because there is a bug in the Steinberg ACI driver. I was added to an interested persons list about 6 months ago and he indicated that a Steinberg Jones employee was "probably going to try to fix the driver". Since then, Steinberg Jones shipped Cubase V1.4 and it still has the same exact problem that the previous version had. Exactly the same symtoms. BTW - I did try to contact Mark Of The Unicorn about the same problem and have never been able to reach their tech support group. The phone is always busy. Has anyone else out there have the same frustrating experience using Cubase? I thought perhaps a good person to ask about this was Piet van Oostrum, who posts the list of midi archives on a regular basis to the alt.answers and other .answers usenet groups. I wrote him, quoting your message andasking if he could suggest an appropriate FTP site. It sounds like a valuable collection to me, particularly if the list does not maintain its own archive. I've replaced sendmail, dbm, cron, dns, cc, installed TeX, etc. Ah, I guess that's a rhetorical question...) Anyway, mh is a much better reader than the one that comes with UNIX. It stores each message as a separate file with a numeric name. ("1", "2", etc.) Messages are easily sorted and grouped. Similar messages may be grouped and each group is then stored in its own subdirectory. So, in this case, I have a directory called "cakewalk" with 900 messages with the filenames from "1" to "900".
