We don't have a regularly posted FAQ, and neither does SYNTH-L, which is a bit of a drag. The closest I've ever come to wrapping up all the usual questions into one post was in the following letter to a new list member, some time ago. I reprint it here with the name deleted for privacy. ------------ cut here ---------------- John Q. Newchum writes: > > Mike, What is the Listserv address for Synth-L? What kind > of topics are discussed? Is it one of your lists? I'm a co-owner with Joe McMahon; I helped start the list but only took a share in running it recently. SYNTH-L is a mailing list for dicsussing what we call 'gearhead' stuff; equipment, pricing, tech notes, etc. Its sister list, EMUSIC-L is for discussing the more cerebral aspects of electronic music, from form and content to future directions in computers and hardware standards. SYNTH-L is open to price discussions and sale of used gear by list members; EMUSIC-L is not. Neither list is open to advertisements, other than announcements of new music for sale by list members. Both lists are controlled by listserv@american.edu and are subscribed to by sending a one-liner message SUBSCRIBE SYNTH-L John Q. Newchum You can also add a second line to subscribe to EMUSIC-L in the same message, or send a separate message to the list server to subscribe there. You will get an automatic reply which contains other useful data, like how to request info from the server and how to sign off. Save this for future reference. Then you can post by sending email to synth-l@american.edu or to emusic-l@american.edu. You will not get a copy back of your own mail unless you want it; the sign-on message sheet explains how to set this up. Most folks find the two lists complement each other, but others read only one or the other; EMUSIC-L is especially devoted to academic and professional musicians who don't want to wade through tons of messages about soundcards. I hope to see you there! mike ------------ cut here ---------------- So as you can see, we try to divide the lists by content and by a few hard and fast rules (the fellow who posted a sampler for sale on EMUSIC-L, for instance, has been asked to move the ad to SYNTH-L). Joe has actually typed up a very nice pair of charters for both lists; I need to speak to him about the possibility of having BOTH charters emailed to anyone who joins EITHER list; since the two lists are 'sisters', the small bit of redundant information would be forgivable in the light of the enhanced clarity. Of course, people have to READ these rules and then agree to abide by them, which ranks along with not knowing how to unsubscribe as the highest misuse of list bandwidth. Folks who ignore the rules just have to be handled on a one-by-one basis, and we appreciate your patience as we deal with them. It's rare that both Joe AND I are not able to get onto the list and handle such things at least every couple of days. mike for the Management -- mike metlay | atomic city | Nick Rothwell on the Alesis Quadrasynth: p.o.box 81175 | pgh pa 15217-0675 | "Goomba... I learned a long time ago to save one single message from each list-svr list I'm on -- the one that describes how to unsubscribe ( I mean, if you *really* want to get off of the list, you must do it correctly). This is an excellent opportunity to mention again, eh? UNSUBSCRIBE SYNTH-L ObEMUSIC: Since I'm not on the Vangelis list anymore, can someone tell us if there's anything solid on the release schedule? I thought that there was supposed to be an October studio release, coming after the officail Blade Runner soundtrack. Eh? (does this qualify for 'content' as described in Metlay's description?) It's proper for some servers, like the one in Finland that handles the Wavestation group right now, but it's no good for EMUSIC-L or SYNTH-L. The syntax at AUVM is SIGNOFF SYNTH-L >ObEMUSIC: Since I'm not on the Vangelis list anymore, can someone >tell us if there's anything solid on the release schedule? Yeah, I guess so, considering you're trying to sell anything. ;) -- mike metlay | atomic city | Nick Rothwell on the Alesis Quadrasynth: p.o.box 81175 | pgh pa 15217-0675 | "Goomba... That's alright, it won't be the first time I've made an ass out of myself in front of 527 folk (many of which are still trying to 'SIGNOFF' due to my repeated ramblings and posts chock full of mis-info ;^). | SIGNOFF SYNTH-L What was that again? | SIGNOFF SYNTH-L |[...] like the one in Finland that handles the Wavestation group right now, But not for long -- I hope some of you list runners are considering taking this over...
