Besides, it has a wrong configuration of PRINT option. Thus, if you try to print out your notation, you'll see that the notation appears in an enormous format, so that only 2-3 bars really fit in a page. I don't have a solution, but I contacted the authors of the program and they said that they are currently working on the next version of Musika (maybe Musika4, or smth like that) in which they hope to eliminate the bugs of Musika3. "Does anyone have experience with both Cakewalk 2.0/3.0 and the new Vision 1.4 for IBM. I would like to know some of the pros and cons of Vision 1.4 and some of the salient features of the program." I don't have a whole lot of experience with WinCake, but I should have enough to discuss this. I'm a major Vision user. The thing I like most about Vision is the interface, and the way things are done, having used Master Tracks and Cake. There are a few oddities to get used to, like Instruments setup, but once you do the thing is particularly intuitive. That said, I'm going to deal with the disadvantages first. Vision is a very poor port. Opcode doesn't know Windows that well, and it's reflected in the program. The interface has just been transported from Mac, not adapted to Windows. The most glaring error here is that you can see through the back of the application to the others, just as in System 7, rather than having a solid background to the window. The truth is, Vision 2.0 would knock WinCake out of the water, IMHO, but 1.4 for Windows is essentially 1.x for Mac. That means WinVision lacks notation view and the improved color interface. Those are the downsides. Here are the things I like: - Vision's CTRL-ALT-SHIFT click brings up great online help. - Rich filtering, input map functions - MIDIKeys allows MIDI controller events/notes to control functions. (ie pitch bend records!) Cool! Aside from that, the two are identical, and I just find the interface in Vision to be really intuitive. Second place for this has to go to Master Tracks Pro. And many would argue between the two. But WinCake falls way behind interface-wise. And features-wise, Vision is able to outdo Master Tracks Pro in many areas, hence it is my first choice. Now all we need is to get the Windows upgrade to version 2.0 and see Studio Vision join us. For electronic music, the synth has become the basic tool. From the patch bays of the Buchla, Arp and Moog on up to todays Digital Super Giga Mega DBXG800B2000SUX. Which you've simply got to love... The various machines we get all make such bitchin sounds that it makes us want to talk about how we patched it, sequenced it, sampled it, processed it and recorded it. Each of the techniques are heard by the listener and become part of the piece. A piece can be based around one pleasing patch (that might take 16 hours to create). Its ok to talk about the technology here I think, but I would like to see the talk tie in more to the composition processes and techniques used to make a piece. Also, as I mentioned before, I think it would be very cool if the talk were accompanied by small samples of the end product. For instance short examples of techniques or sections of a piece in text converted form; like binhexed- *.wav, mac sounds, midi recordings, patch and pattern dumps, etc. Today's PC and Mac are made to make nice sound! Perhaps I am generalizing, but I think most subscribers would have no trouble with converting at least the wav and mac sound files. Agreed, there are so many file types, and we all use so many different products, that people will end up downloading a lot of stuff they can't use. But hey, it's something to think about. ========================================================================= Date: Sun, 1 Jan 1995 23:31:02 -0800 Reply-To: Electronic Music Discussion List Sender: Electronic Music Discussion List From: Tony Cappellini Subject: Re: binhexing You wrote: > >Have any of y'all tried sending .wav or mac sounds through internet gateways? > > >There is a piece of shareware that translates MIDI files into text files in >the Music and Sound forum on AOL. (Kind of like an "L-VIEW" program for audio?) Yeah, I had to do the same for my home page. I used 'cool' to do the recording and the converting (actually saving directly to mu-law .au files). Cool is an amazing shareware audio-processing program (mentionned in Electronic Musician when they did that article about shareware music applications). This is PC software, BTW. You can find version 1.34a at romulus.ucs.uoknor.edu in /mirrors/SimTel/win3/sound. If you want something for the mac, SoundApp is a good conversion/player program, although it doesn't convert to too many formats. For processing, there's Sound Hack, a useful but experimental piece of software. You can find both of these at any mac.archive.umich.edu mirror. _/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/ _/ Alex Sanielevici _/_/ E-Mail : sanielea@ere.umontreal.ca _/ _/ Music student, _/_/ or : alex@speedy.hypercomp.ns.ca _/ _/ University of Montreal _/_/ Voice : (514) 731-2578 _/ _/ Quebec, Canada. _/_/ http://mistral.ere.umontreal.ca:9090/ _/ _/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/ << I know you believe you understand what you think I said, but I am not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant >> -- Reliable source. ========================================================================= Date: Mon, 2 Jan 1995 15:27:58 EDT Reply-To: Electronic Music Discussion List Sender: Electronic Music Discussion List From: Afonso de Ligorio - ADI-11 Subject: Yamaha+Roland I'm intending to buy a music keyboard with a sequencer and disk-drive (or a keyboard plus a sequencer). No, but binhexing and uuencoding have the same purpose: to convert data from 8-bit binary to 7-bit ascii characters. Binhexing is less widely used, and is more mac-specific. Uuencoding is more widely used because of it's cross-platform abilities and greater efficiency. What does inferior mean? This is a subjective issue that you will have to judge for yourself. Of course the synthesis abilities of the K2K blow away ANY sampler! >Is the CD3000 worth a look? Absolutely. If you plan on swiping alot of your samples from audio CD, the CD3000 will enable you to lift sounds _without_ having to go through analog to do it! This makes for VERY clean samples, of course the CD-ROM library for AKAI is just huge, of course all AKAI format CD-ROMs have the samples already configured into programs/keygroups etc. The CD3000 will also read the Roland CD-ROMs, of which there are also a great many. Michael, it would be great to see Peavey finally 'hit the mark' with a product, but I cant help doubting. I own an SP/SX and I know its capabilities and weaknesses, I know my way around the DPM series so I _am_ in a position to say that just about all of their Synth products have been "If only they'd done..." type things. Many promises have been made over the past couple of years for the SP (AKAI format reading springs to mind) but none have come to fruition. Products are announced, only to make it to market a year and a half later..and even then, they seem antiquated. Well, if you are not really concerned about internal sounds and at the same time want to have a good touch feel, the best option might be to get a basic controller. There are bunch of them, so check first of all your local stores - so that you be able to touch the keys yourself and see if you like it. Kawai-MDK61 is an inexpensive one with a good responsive feel, small in size (but I'm afraid it has only channel aftertouch, no key aftertouch). Check, again, Roland controllers, like A-30 (with 76 keys and still small size). Well, there are other controllers, with 49 or 88 keys, as you like. All Sound Canvas are MIDI compatible. Later versions, like SC-55MkII or SC-88, are better; but get the one which is cheaper. Regards. For the controller, I highly would recommend the Kurzweil PC-88, from what I have seen, it has an excellent piano feel, and 64 good internal sounds. As far as GM/GS modules (Sound Canvas), the new 64 voice Roland Sound Canvas promises to be excellent, but I have not heard it. You can create your examples, in FINALE for example, and then save the FINALE page as an EPS file. (In some versions of FINALE, you can save to a TIFF file.) These, of course, are graphic elements pages, and then you can import them into most word processing programs with a minimum of fuss and bother. You can even resize and shape them, in most programs. They're all going to be real nice. Be sure that you have the right reason for getting the weighted keys. You will not get the poly-aftertouch which is incredably musical, as opposed to the "lock step" sound of channel aftertouch. And the keys are not as fast or "poor player friendly" as a nice unweighted kbd. By "poor player friendly" I mean that if you have to keep playing the same piece or lick over and over, the weighted kbd will probably make it harder to consistently play the piece repeatedly. And, your hands get tired ;-) For you, I'd take a look at the Roland SC's that include an internal sequence player (some of them even have speakers, too. That's a piano store version vs the pro division of Roland) They will play standard midi files, they'll do music minus one, and they even include a "vamp" feature. The following suggestions are not new. But they are not much known. Ilja Prigogine (Nobel Prize Winner) and other people said simular suggestions. Please go ahead with own reflections and do experiments and computer-simulations. Perhaps many new scientific discoveries are possible! ---------------------------------------------------------------- Neuronal Nets In Mixtures Of Substances ---------------------------------------------------------------- Perhaps you can produce Neuronal Nets in mixtures of substances with relatively changeable properties and substances with memory properties. X O X O X O O X O X O X X O X O X O O X O X O X X - Particle with relatively changeable properties (A cell of the Neuronal Net) - Its state fluctuates. O - Particle with memory properties (This particle cause that the kind of connection between cells "X" is relatively constant.) - According to memory state of this particle the state of a cell determines the state of the neighbouring cell. - High-energy (chaotic) successions of cell states can change the memory state of this particle. Because of that evolution by energy control is possible. - Somtimes Rule of Hebb exist: The same state of neighbouring cells leads to another memory state of this particle then different states. For example: ----------- - A mixture of a conductive substance (eletric current is changeable = "X"-particles) with a magnetic substance (memory properties = "O"-particles) - Connection beetween cells "X" takes place by induction (according to memory state (polarization) of the neighbouring particles "O"). - Evolution by energy control: Energy supply takes place by a global alternating field. High-energy supply leads to chaotic currents --> New Order is possible. Low-energie supply --> strengthens the old Order. (read the chapter "The Learning Process") - Rule of Hebb: The same current direction of neighbouring cells "X" leads to another polarization of the neighbouring particle "O" then different current direction. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Neuronal Nets In Any Substances ---------------------------------------------------------------- Perhaps you can produce Neuronal Nets in any substances, too, because molecules have relatively changeable and relatively constant (memory) properties. Distribution of properties "X" and "O" in a structure of several molecules: X O X O X O O X O X O X X O X O X O O X O X O X X - relatively changeable property of a molecule (A cell of the Neuronal Net) - Its state fluctuates. O - memory property of a molecule (cause that the kind of connection between cells "X" is relatively constant.) - According to memory state of this "O" the state of a cell determines the state of the neighbouring cell (physical interaction). ... ... (Analogie to "Neuronal Nets in Mixtures") ---------------------------------------------------------------- The Learning Process ---------------------------------------------------------------- The learning process is stimulated by global energy supply. It's simular to brain: If something is not OK then energy supply is increased. If everthing is OK then energy supply is decreased. --------------------- ! global energy supply!----<--------<----- ! Each system fluctuates in a somewhat chaotic way: 1.) Sometimes the system fluctuates in a undesired direction: --> Energy supply is increased --> The neuronal connections are destroyed partly (Not all connections are destroyed: only "bad", unstable configurations of connections) 2.) Remark: ------ - You have to find the middle energy supply and the variation of energy supply by measuring series or by flexible computer programs. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Teach The Object Any Physical Or Chemical Properties ---------------------------------------------------------------- Perhaps you can teach the object any physical or chemical properties? It's N O T necessary to know the following mechanism, because self-organization takes place. At First : ---------- Chance distribution of any L O C A L properties "a" and "b" in the object: Object: (It's only an example) abababbabbaba bababbababbab babaaabbabbaa bbabbbabbbbab 1. Possibility (After learning process): ---------------------------------------- Moving balance of L O C A L properties (It's a very simple learning destination) bbbbbabbaaaaa bbbbbbabbaaaa bbbbbaababaaa bbbbbbaaaaaaa --> other G L O B A L physical and chemical properties 2. Possibility (After learning process): ---------------------------------------- Moving space and time concentration of L O C A L proterties bbbbbaaaaabbb bbbbbaaaaabbb aaaaabbbbbaaa aaaaabbbbbaaa --> other G L O B A L physical and chemical properties 3. Possibility: -------------- Perhaps you can control known self-organization-mechanism (for example Belousov-Zhabotinsky-reaction) to disired direction by learning process. Remark ------ It could be that "a" and "b" are unknown physical properties in microcosm. Then global properties (after learning process) are unknown, too. ---> New scientific discoveries are possible!! ---------------------------------------------------------------- Literature ---------------------------------------------------------------- Read literature about Chaos Theory, Neuronal Nets (especially Hopfield Net) and evolution! ---------------------------------------------------------------- Possible Uses ---------------------------------------------------------------- 1.) Seeking Notation Program I have a possible solution to your problem that doesn't require buying any additional software. Use your notation software to get the example looking the way you want it and press shift-command-3. You should hear what sounds like a camera shutter and a new file called "Picture 1" (or 2 etc.) will appear on the top level of your hard disk. It's a PICT file of your screen exactly as is was when you pressed the buttons (watch where your cursor is when you try this!). Then just use any drawing program to cut away everything but your example. I don't know if that will do the trick for you but it works for short examples that I use in class handouts. If you need to include a really long example you might try Nightingale by TAP. They include an application that turns Nightingale files into Adobe Freehand (or maybe it's Illustrator, I forget) files. I haven't tried it myself but I've heard it works. Ron Geier
