From what I hear from many people, Band in a Box is the best program to get for this type of thing in this price range. I have spoken with Mike Vax (a friend and colleague)--he uses it himself with many of his students and even for his own personal practice. First, BIAB is a continuously evolving product with regular upgrades and third party support (fake books, styles). I've owned MiBAC for several years and there has not been a significant upgrade to the product in that time. When you compare the orginal swing style in BIAB to MiBAC's jazz, MiBAC feels more authentic (the drum tracks are more random). I never liked the bass lines MiBAC generates, I can do much better on my own. And because I'm a keyboard player, I ignore the piano tracks. But with add-on styles like SWING #2 and others, BIAB sounds better to my ear (I think it swings more). Also, jazz isn't just the traditional swing style, there are all the various latin beats, big band, fusion, bebop, etc. which BIAB does, MiBAC doesn't. My recommendation is to get BIAB with a full complement of styles and maybe a fake book. ---------- From: Tom Maszerowski To: Multiple recipients of list EMUSIC-L Subject: Mibac Jazz vs. Band in a Box Date: Sunday, January 08, 1995 10:55AM I am looking at purchasing one or the other of these (for a Mac). I have been using BIAB for IBM for 6 mo. It really does make learning tunes easier. The new windows version lets you print out a pretty good lead sheet, has harmony, and lets you enter notation with the mouse very quickly. It's alot more money, but a Roland Sound Canvas really makes a difference. -- Tom Dillon Pan American Cellular Subscriber Group Motorola, Inc.
