Well, in my Proteus MPS manual, they're called "performance presets." I've always used the name multi-patch to specify groups of single sounds bound together for performance/playback. Multi-patch is name my K-1 and K-4 manuals use and that's the name I've always taught in class. I guess I've always stuck with it because my first midi synth was the K-1. I think that each manufacturer has their own term for this. I'd like to hear other's input and ideas on this too. I am on the verge of purchasing Mark of the Unicorn's Midi Express Macintosh interface module and Unisyn editor/librarian software. I've never used a "designated" cable system for my synths, etc., and have a few questions for those of you who are "old hat" at this! First, in looking over the literature for the Midi Express, it says it has 4 individual inputs and 6 individual outputs. (The PC version, however, has 6 and 6 - wonder why??!) Anyway, I need to know what all I need to hook up where. For example, do I need to hook my Yamaha KX-88 keyboard controller to an input AND an output - or just to an input? I don't *think* the KX "receives" data - or does it? Next, I have a Yamaha TG-77 sound module - I know I need to hook it up to an input and output because I do sys-ex dumps to and from the module. But what about my Roland U-220 sound module? I never dump "from" it - so does it need to be hooked up to the input - or just an output? I guess the main question here is - do all pieces of equipment I'm using need to be hooked to both input and output of the Midi Express. And if so - what are the two extra outputs for??!! Also, I've been quoted a price at Thoroughbred Music of $289 for the Midi Express and $175 for Unisyn - does this sound about right? Anyone have any dealings with this company? Were they good to deal with? Some of my clients only use it as a MIDI channel multiplier (MIDI Time Piece has 8 outs x 16 channels each). Other people want to use it like you do. To get full functionality, editing and patch dumps to-and-fro you need to hook up both the ins and outs. Also, you need to hook up the ins (from the synth) of the kbd you want to use as a controller (it can be more than one, but why?). If you don't send data (sysex) to a synth, or don't anticipate editing any of the sounds (Unisyn is way cool for that BTW), then you don't have to hook up the outs to that synth. The key is flexibility. As to why there are more outs than ins? Who knows? Maybe it's a cost cutting measure. As an aside, you can hook up some sound modules that can't benefit from 16 channels (DX7 or the like) to a MIDI splitter (like a Nexus) and not have to eat up a whole cable just for that synth. I use a Nexus in an application that gets me 8 modules from one Midi Time Piece cable (DX7, Video Time Piece, D550, M1, etc.). Michael Black P.S. I like Thoroughbred. Good Job if stuff is in stock. That would give you all 16 channels on that cable. The U-220 could get it's own cable or you could combine it (like via a thru) with another device. Rule of thumb: 16 MIDI channels per cable. If you nedd em, use em. Unisyn is very cool about storing and retrieving sounds (call them performances, patches, banks, it does it all) You can even create a database with keywords like Woodwinds Oboe, or Synth Scary/Heavy, or whatever and do searches for sounds, irregardless of the synth that they play on. You could find every Giorgio Moroder sound that you have, on every synth. Click them and theto that synth without touching it. Powerful. >So, in other words - I do need to hook up the TG-77 "both ways" since I'll >be doing dumps to and from it. A client uses an SG1D as a controller and he has it hooked up only one way. Others do tha same thing. If you want more than controller, you can have that too. It doesn't sound like you want that though. An important note, with the power to send 16 channels to a synth at one time, it's pretty easy to exceed voices or noted on a synth. Spread your orchestration around. Does the KX-88 even accept any sys-ex data - I'm >really new at this aspect of midi!! Yes the KX88 does accept MIDI IN, but only for 'dumps' of the current memory settings. If you do much with the KX88 setups, you might want to hook up both the IN and OUTS, otherwise you can use the OUT as another synth 'destination', just as you described. I do something like this with my MTPII on port number 8 which has a controller connected to the INPUT, but a SYNTH connected to the output. I used to have a KX88 and I had several setups which did simple transpositions because I used to not be able to play in the various keys very well, but our piano player always encouraged me to learn how to play in the various keys, so later I didn't need this feature. (I had a setup for every key, C#, D, D#, E etc. so I could play everything in C) >Jon Crystal writes >Sounds like a waste to me. If you plan to do your patch editing in Unisyn, >on the computer, there is virtually no reason to dump FROM the 77 once you >download your existing patches. I woudn't say it's a 'waste', it just makes things easier. If you have a whole bunch of controllers that you need to use, then yes, you need the inputs, otherwise, just leave them connected to the TG77 so you don't have to repatch things. I connect both the IN & OUT to the TG77's because anytime I get new sounds on a PCM Memory card or if I change something on the TG77's front panel, I can easily 'grab' whatever I have in the TG77s without having to plug up anything and put it in my Galaxy TG77 Current setup document so that Vision (the sequencer) can know what is always in the TG77. I connect both the IN and OUT of the R70 drum machine so I can use the velocity sensitive pads that it has. The down side of that is that it sends out MIDI active sensing messages which probably doesn't hurt anything, but it does tie up the processor (the little blinks which means MIDI data is being detected on that particular port - no big deal though) The only problems that I have had are that occasionally, my Macintosh Quadra 840AV doesn't see the MTPII and I never have figured out what causes that. Sometimes a reboot of the MTP II cures the problem, other times nothing has worked. Then several days later, I'll turn everything on and it works just fine. Also, just lately, the MTP II has reverted to it's base memory setups, but I just launch the MTP II setup program and it puts everything back to normal. This has happened twice now, so I'm not sure what is causing the problem. The way I use the 'base setups' in the MTP II is the following: Studio Setup - this is what I use when I am using the Mac - everything is routed through the Mac and I turn off local control of the JV90/JV1000 so only the computer sends MIDI data to them (through the sequencer) The following setups I use when the computer is off and I just want to play a particular synth (local control is still off on the JV90/1000 so that the MTP II is the source of all MIDI data so the JV90/1000 don't get the same MIDI data twice - once from the onboard keyboard, once from the MIDI in - setting MIDI local control to OFF makes it so that only MIDI data from the MIDI in is played. JV90 - the output of the JV90 & JV1000 is routed to the input of the JV90 JV1000 - the output of the JV90 & JV1000 is routed to the input of the JV1000 TG77-1 - the output of the JV90 & JV1000 is routed to the input of the TG77-1 TG77-2 - the output of the JV90 & JV1000 is routed to the input of the TG77-2 TG77-1&2 - the output of the JV90 & JV1000 is routed to the input of the TG77-1 & TG77-2 so I can play both simultaneously for that 'really fat'sound :-) R70 - the output of the JV90 & JV1000 is routed to the input of the R70 Sound Canvas - the output of the JV90 & JV1000 is routed to the input of the Sound Canvas (the VE- GS01 module inside the JV90 with it's own MIDI input) I route both the output of the JV90 & JV1000 to the various modules in these setups because that way, either controller can play the particular module/synth/drum machine etc. (actually I think I also route the output from the WX11 wind controller too, but I don't use that very often.) I don't usually have my JV1000 at home because I leave it at the church where I play - when I do bring it home though, it's all ready to go in the MTP II, I just have to plug it into port 2, both input and output. ========================================================================= Date: Tue, 6 Jun 1995 14:39:05 EDT Reply-To: Electronic Music Discussion List Sender: Electronic Music Discussion List From: glinert@CS.RPI.EDU Subject: cfp - ASSETS'96 Comments: To: AUDIO-L%ITESMVF1.BITNET@cmsa.berkeley.edu, AUDITORY@VM1.MCGILL.CA, Music-Research@comlab.ox.ac.uk, SYNTH-L@american.edu, anita@mitvma.mit.edu, craig@well.sf.ca.us, dasp-l%csearn.bitnet@cmsa.berkeley.edu, dgl@sonic.com, emusic-l@american.edu, everyone@ccrma.Stanford.EDU, fish@musclefish.com, fisher@mitvma.mit.edu, frm@ucsd.edu, hearing-seminar@apple.com, icma@umich.edu, js%timbre.uucp@nbn.com, lhorton@mitvma.mit.edu, mcleod@mitvma.mit.edu, minsky@MEDIA-LAB.MEDIA.MIT.EDU, mla-l%iubvm.bitnet@cmsa.berkeley.edu, msimoni@umich.edu, muscom@mills.edu, music-research-request@cattell.psych.upenn.edu, notmus-l%ubvm.bitnet@cmsa.berkeley.edu, rww@sgi.com, ssys@netcom.com, studer@applelink.apple.com, timis@opcode.com, users@cnmat.CNMAT.Berkeley.EDU, willy@dgp.toronto.edu Call For Participation Call For Participation =--=--=--=--=--=--=--= =--=--=--=--=--=--=--= ASSETS'96 The 2nd ACM/SIGCAPH Conference on Assistive Technologies -=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=--=- April 11-12, 1996 Vancouver Renaissance Hotel Vancouver, Canada Sponsored by the ACM's Special Interest Group on Computers and the Physically Handicapped, ASSETS'96 will be the second in a new series of conferences whose goal is to provide a forum where researchers and developers, from academia and industry, can meet to exchange ideas and report on new developments relating to computer-based systems to help people. Her seizures had burned out her sleep center, so one might say she was in a comatose state. All treatment was unsucessfull. Mostly drug therapy did nothing but throw her into severe seizures. Family stimulation was not waking her up, so I told her mom, her aunt, and her brother to come up with some music that she hated. This music was implimented via walkman every two hours every day for a week at first. By the end of the second week my girl was staying awake long enough to get a cup of frozen yougart down. She would fall back asleep--we would turn metalica up to wake her up. This was the only thing that worked with her, along with some other nonharmfull forms of negitive stimuli. My theory(baised purley on observation and experience working with neuro patients) is that life is not all good, and pleasant. Everyone was using sweet wispers and soft pillows. I gave her screams and Heavy Metal which she hated, and this is what woke her up. I believe the constant stimulis that music provides can prove essential in the stimulation of new neural networks. I am a Neuroscience ex Corpsmen\RN, and I hope this Falls into the subject of psychoacoustics. I have one other story that deals with Music and the neuro patient that relates. By the way the girl walked out of TRI City Neuro Unit in Carlsbad Ca. thirty days later. Hope this helps. If you find any more stuff that deals with this sort of thing I'm interested deeply. CHARTER comp.music.research is a moderated newsgroup for discussion of the uses on computers in any aspect of research into music, including composition, analysis, synthesis and sound generation. It also includes music representation systems, information retrieval systems for musical scores, music printing (but not commercial advertising) and computer-based musicology and ethnomusicology. It is a forum to ask questions, share information, and to announce new results. It is expected that the information may be used by the Music-Research Digest for their mailing list. RATIONALE The news group comp.music was originally intended as a forum for Computer Music Research, but the rapid growth in availability of MIDI and multimedia personal computers, together with the number of sites who do not take rec.music.makers.synth has meant that for many months over 90% of postings within that group have related to the use of computers to make music rather than research in such subjects. This dilution has led to the reearch community leaving the group, and the growth in specialist mailing lists. By creating this new news group we wish to provide a publically available single resource. It will not replace the mailing lists, but complement them in a more general context. The creation would leave comp.music as a home for general music playing on computers, including MIDI and synthesiser equipment. The group needs to be moderated at least intitally to maintain the separation of topic from comp.music. MODERATION POLICY Jeff Harrington has volunteered to be the moderator, with John Fitch as backup moderator. Both are participants in many of the mailing lists mentioned above. The purpose of moderation is to maintain the focus of the group on research issues and to prevent dilution with other computers-and-music material which properly belongs elsewhere. ========================================================================= Date: Wed, 7 Jun 1995 13:02:17 +0300 Reply-To: Electronic Music Discussion List Sender: Electronic Music Discussion List From: Teemu Korpipaa Subject: Anyone using Dr.T's KCS Omega II I've been searching for a good and flexible sequencer platform and I just read about the program described in the subject.
