I studied acoustic-related topics for 3 years and from what I know about combined waveforms it is not possible. Vocal sounds are not stationary while music is that might be a key to divide it rather by some algorithm analysing sound which is Fourier transformed. I can't imagine that in real time, and without help from a person. Also, if a singer sings a long note, the voice becomes stationary and the algorithm will not treat it as something else and will 'see' it as a component of music. I wouldn't mind listening to 'pure' music of my favourite songs, also using them to perform etc. But it just isn't possible. We would be interested in getting feedback from people who are involved in some sort of music making and/or performing. One of our main points of interest is the user-friendliness of studio gear, MIDI keyboards, sound modules, effects units, mixers, software, etc. In other words what we would like to ask you is: Does your equipment really enable you to do what you want to do ? If you are interested in taking part in this poll, we would like to ask you to answer the following questions and send them back to us via e-mail. What is your background ? If you like, you can give us your personal details. * Audio Industry Name: * Music Industry Company: * Computer Industry Position: * Producer Address: * Musician Telephone: * Performer E-Mail * Engineer * University Lecturer * Teacher 1. What equipment/instruments do you use ? 2. What is your favourite instrument/piece of gear and why ? 3. What is your approach to music and performance ? Do you most often * play live, * work in the studio, * use acoustic/traditional instruments such as guitars, drums, etc. * work with computer basd systems and MIDI, * produce installations, multimedia work, * use music to support performing art ? 4. Do you think technology has influenced music in a positive way over the last ten years or so ? If yes, why ? 5. If you do play both traditional and electronic instruments, what is the difference when you compare the two in terms of feel and response ? 6. Do you feel encouraged or intimidated using modern music technology ? 7. Which instrument(s) on the market would you consider truly "intuitive" or "interactive" and why ? 8. Do you feel there is anything wrong with today's music technology in terms of user-friendliness ? Do you tink there is any desparate need for improvement ? 9. If you were to design an electronic music device or software package, how would it differ from anything that already exits on the market ? 10. If you were to design an interactive performance tool for use in a performance space, what would be its features ? We would really appreciate your feedback and comments. I've found that since 1990, their articles prove invaluable to the electronic musician, and their articles keep getting better. Keyboard is an okay magazine as well, but EM is my textbook, my demi-bible. I also work in a small space like you. I chose to surround myself with the equipment, rather that in a straightline along the wall. I got the computer, 4-track and rack equipment facing me on a table, with my keboard running perpendicular to the table on my right (an easy pivot back and fort to work)and the percussion setup running perp. to the table on my left. How close are the the neigbors/family members? I'm asking because you might want to consider some sort of noise dampering setup to allow yourself and your neigbors a little privacy for those moments when the headphones just wont do. I have high ceilings as well, so, believe it or not, I used good old fashioned egg cartons to squelch some of the horrible reverb coming off the wooden walls. It's ugly as hell, but it works. They're not to good for reducing overall volume, though, just warms the sound of the room up is all. Have fun!!!! The problem that I see is in the not stationary parts of the sound. At least when we are treating noise-like sounds autocorrelation may serve to eliminate those. Of course this is all too much complicated and time consuming just to listen to music without vocals, but it may be useful for some other more interesting stuff. It would avoid a lot of things like chain letters, although a determined mailbomber would take the trouble to subscribe anyway. The downside is that potentially good posters who know about the list address but not about how to reach the owners might not be able to get subscription information. I tend to get a sense of a fixed atmosphere by layering a very deep note with a large reverb under a mix, very soft, to give a sense of an overall shape. The bass tone that I use is generally filtered to remove midrange and leave the mix space to breath; I am fond of the Roland U-50 for sounds like this, although I have recently had good luck with my Yamaha SY35's FM capabilities. Dustin, I can't tell if you're baiting me, or what. Let me spell it out. An article which contributes to the discussion on the list AND contains a signature file which mentions CD/tape/album availability is acceptable. A ONE-TIME post mentioning that you have completed a CD or tape and a summary of experiences/etc. in making the recording is admirable. Repeated postings saying nothing but "My recording is available" are bad. Outright ads for records you did not make, hardware, software, used cars, love slaves from Russia, Fuller brushes, or Amway are very bad. Would it, then, have been proper form to merely >mention the sale and the genres involved and invite email from interested >parties since this list undoubtedly offers a concrete idea as to potential >musical interests and parities? Yes, it would have. An entire listing is very tempting to put up, because it saves people the hassle of asking for one and the seller the hassle of mailing many copies individually. However, there are advantages to individualized mailings: the percentage of people who see the catalog and then order stuff is probably higher, the seller has email addresses on file for followups (hopefully polite ones), the charter doesn't take a beating, and the karmic advantages of not spamming the list are considerable. Dustin: Yes, politeness can be rare enough to be remarkable, but we're fortunate that EMUSIC-l and SYNTH-L are actually usually far more decent than the other lists out there, to say nothing of USENET netnewsgroups. There is the occasional slipup, like someone taking it on himself to not only refuse to accept an apology for a mismailing, but also to waste bandwidth by publicly, rather than privately, castigating the guilty party even after the apology was given (you know who you are and in reference to what), but those are thankfully rare. The vast majority of our readers are wise enough to see something they don't like, shrug, delete it, and let it go quietly. That's what keeps administering this list tolerable; what some would call 'elitism' we like to think of, perhaps deludedly, as 'having a preference for people who don't make us scream and punch walls'. But : 1) You will need a program to send the samples over. I don't know if any free packages can do that ( I'll be glad to know ). 2) You must be sure that the sampling extension you haven't is only the interface and that your keyboard has ram to put the samples into as well as the ability to make patch out of them. You may want to look into a seperate Drum Module, Sound Compressors for enhancing the sound of your axe, an EWI or WX11, for some really cool musical interludes or help in composition, and an equalizer. Of course you could go even crazier, but I feel that everything you get is a plus when you're the only one on stage. Since we both have similar aspirations, let me know about some ideas you may have. ========================================================================= Date: Fri, 7 Jul 1995 16:32:26 -0400 Reply-To: Electronic Music Discussion List Sender: Electronic Music Discussion List From: "Matthew W. I also just bought a new MIDI keyboard. I have a Yahmaha PSR-510 and I'm also having loads of fun. Maybe someday we'll be playing our keyboards in realtime through AOL. I know the electronic musicians are working on it. What kind of computer do you use? I use a MAC LCIII? What kind of MIDI software do you like? As a beginner I am using Musicshop, Songworks, and Band in the Box. I'd like to hear from you. Do you also play Hall Leonard's electronic music books too? I am looking forward to hearing from you. Another new Kid. (I'm a computer/reading teacher in Phila. (B) I guess when I signed my name "ran" it looked like Ron. Actually Ran is short for Randy...I just like to sign all my email like that. Sorta like a calling card. (C) Okay, enough letters. Right now my interest lies, with the workstation, in composing the children's musical that I've started writing with a friend. BUT, that creeping urge to perform hits me every night, and every time I see a particular local band that I love VERY MUCH. They aren't jazz, they keyboard player studied in New Orleans and does some really keen solo stuff, BUT they have some fun cover tunes and most of all it inspires me to go home and jam for a few hours. SO, that is my direction for the next few weeks (I tend to easily blow off course)...Do you perform locally in your city? ttfn RAN <---- (a.k.a. randy) ========================================================================= Date: Fri, 7 Jul 1995 17:30:56 -0600 Reply-To: Electronic Music Discussion List Sender: Electronic Music Discussion List From: Randy Cole Subject: Re: New Kid -Reply -Reply Hi Susan, I'm a student at the University of Tulsa in Oklahoma. I can't intelligently answer anything right now because I am soooo new to the keyboard scene (so new that I keep calling it keyboard while others call it synth, I know the diff I guess it seems relevant to use both names). I'm a PC guy for now, practical school use, but I dream someday of a big elegant MAC sweeping me away toward creative bliss. Do you compose? (I seem to ask this all the time). What about lyrics? As we all have read, Randy is writing a children's musical. I've never composed so this is my training wheels assignement (assigned by me). ========================================================================= Date: Fri, 7 Jul 1995 17:34:59 -0400 Reply-To: Electronic Music Discussion List Sender: Electronic Music Discussion List From: RonG225zt@AOL.COM Subject: Re: Using Performer with SMPTE >Actually, they currently are available till 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time (which >would be 5:00 Pacific).
