I think this thread is a little old, but I thought "Hey, why not?" I don't have any specific tech info on the subject, but I do know that I have seen even home-quality stereo amplifiers that can do the job pretty well on some music CDs. (Not on all of them. I don't know why.) A friend of mine once tested a few of his CDs on the system and in some of them, the vocals turned into faint "shadows" and in one particular one the vocal section, (lead, backup and all) was totaly lost. No matter how hard we listened, it just wasn't there. (Of course, the rest of the music was.) I don't remember the exact model, but it was a Kenwood home system, and the amp. section had a "Hit Master" key that attempted to erase the vocals. It didn't work on every CD though. The CD which worked best, was (If I remember correctly) a Guns'n Roses album, Use Your Illusion I .(Sorry to bring up such a non-emusic name on the list. It just simply worked best.) So whatever the algorithm or hardware design was, I dunno. But it certainly worked. And you could turn the HM key on or off whenever you wished. I mean it didn't record the sound somewhere first and then spend some time on removing the vocal part and then replay the whole thing. So I guess it was pretty much "Real time" too. BTW, has there been any discussion on the list about Jean M. Jarres chronologie (Chronology?) album? I'ld be happy to retrieve it from the archives. If not, what do you guys think about it? Another classic? or... Zimbak Camire Amirtaas@Math.Sharif.ac.IR (Kambiz Amirtash?) Tanquary" at Jul 7, 95 04:35:55 pm (Good God, I'm actually getting to talk about music for a change!) I'd strongly recommend an EWI or a WX11 if you're a sax player. I'm originally a recorder player, so filter my recommendations accordingly, and I own the EWI. (Note to Constant Readers: I decided not to get it sex-changed into an EVI, because my chops are coming back a lot faster and better than I thought they would.) The EWI is a fascinating instrument; in one box, I've got a very expressive analog synth and controller (the EWI really SHRIEKS when it s processed; more on that later). I can also MIDI it up to my VFXsd or any other MIDI instrument (I was having a particularly good time with it hooked to a Korg DSS full of PPG samples the other week.) With a six-octave range, VERY precise control, and a good feel (once you get used to keys that just SIT there and don't move), it's a marvelously playable instrument. Also, the EWI's a godsend for us carpal-tunneled folk, because you don't have to actually push the keys, just touch 'em. Pricewise, the EWI 2000 (one generation back) should go for about $600. The 1000 should be less, and the 3000 (the new one, which is in production, and is available from various places in the US) is obviously more. The 3K comes with either an alalog or digital synth module. If you're a good sax player, which I expect you are, you would probably find the EWI or WX11 a much more useful way to sequence music, since it would allow you to leverage all your sax experience when playing. Joe sez check it out. --- Joe M. ========================================================================= Date: Mon, 10 Jul 1995 08:59:37 -0700 Reply-To: Electronic Music Discussion List Sender: Electronic Music Discussion List From: Mike Metlay ++ Atomic City Subject: Re: Cancelling vocals In-Reply-To: <009930A5.9C121C20.4@math.sharif.ac.ir> from "Zimbak Camire" at Jul 8, 95 10:25:28 am Zimbak Camire writes-- > > BTW, has there been any discussion on the list about Jean M. I don't know if this will bore the majority of the membership to tears but I was wondering if any would like to share feelings on their sampler of choice and reasoning for its use over the others in this exceedingly crowded and diverse field. Features which distance one unit from another in terms of overall or 'use-specific' applications are what I think are of primary comparitive interest to most as opposed to simple price or cost effectiveness arguments. This is not to say that price has a little or diminished importance, I'd just like to get into the heart of a diverse discussion about the strong differences between brands, models, configurations etc. if others are interested (plus I don't have any feelings or advice to impart about 'Re:cancelling vocals'). My units are: Kurzweil K2000 Reasoning:Expandability of RAM and ROM, synth engine's literally awe-inspiring and probably never fully realized possibilities, I/Os, 'Proteus'-like interface and multitambral setup that I find superior to all other methods I've tried (with a very graphical display). Pretty clean effects too. Downside:Polyphony of 24 voices that's short of a Proteus. SampleCell I card Reasoning:Easy oh so easy to program, good "track faker" for use on short snippets with Pro Tools or Sound Tools where you would not want to devote a whole track (or could not spare one), compatible with the K2000 via Diskmaker software for easy SMDIless programming (not so essential if you leave it in your SCSI chain anyway), nicely integrated with sequencers and not requiring its own MIDI channels. Plus these are now cheap as a mofo on the used market. I've seen them in the classifieds for $500-595 fully loaded with RAM. Assuming RAM is approx. $35 a meg, that makes the card's cost about $315 for a stereo sample playback card. yummy Downside:Polyphony again, even worse this time at only 16 voices. RAM topping at 8meg. No filters. The SampleCell II card solves all this but is not compatible with the aforementioned Diskmaker translation software for use with the K2000.*sigh* No onboard sampling capability. and lastly Roland DJ-70 Reasoning: Sorry, but I've got to break my own rule here and admit that it was the price that got me on this one. Sam Ash (and many other retailers) were blowing them out for a mere $999 at a time when Akai's mono-no-polyphony-or-RAM S01 was asking almost the same. I had always wanted an S-770 but needed money to live on. This was my answer. It's capable of quite a lot for its size (has an excellent load-while-playing feature) but is a novelty compared to the K2000 and many others. Great for techno, rap and other genre specifically needing less expandability and simple, effective, claen sampling. Downside:Polyphony. No SCSI. They exist as a 'post-moderated' alternative to the rec.music.makers.synth newsgroup. (post-moderated means that the moderators monitor what is posted, and sometimes remind posters about the 'rules': see below for the 'rules'). A digest is also available for each list. This collects all the postings for a day into one e-mailing. "Who are the moderators?"************************************************** Joe McMahon and Mike Metlay have been on here for over seven years. Their aim is to keep the mail flowing and the illegal and blatantly out-of-line traffic to a minimum. Joe can be contacted at: mcmahon@clark.net Mike can be contacted at: atomic@netcom.com "So, can I post anything I feel like?"************************************* Well, no. There are some RULES. The basic thrust of EMUSIC-L is to provide a forum for the discussion of music made by electronic means. The actual means is secondary (and more the subject of SYNTH-L). What we are concerned with on EMUSIC-L is the music, composing, and related topics. Therefore: 1) Ads are not permitted on EMUSIC-L. Advising someone as to whether they are getting ripped off *if they ask the list* is permissible; otherwise, use private mail. Requests for addresses of mail-order firms, etc. are OK. Cutting deals on your own personal equipment is not OK. Please do it privately, or subscribe to SYNTH-L, where you'll reach a more responsive audience. Requests for advice as to whether a price is good or not are marginally OK, but would probably reach a more knowledgeable audience on SYNTH-L. Prices really aren't so much of interest unless either the entire world (literally) should know about this great deal, or you have inside information on a new product or upgrade. Exception: if someone has gone through the trouble of composing, recording, and pressing a CD or tape, submitting an article describing the process and their experiences and mentioning that the tape or CD is available for purchase is OK. Posting repeated ads for the CD is not. (A single mention is marginally acceptable; a short mention in a signature file is fine.) Here's a quick summary (it goes from 'admirable' to 'not acceptable'): - A ONE-TIME post mentioning that you have completed a CD or tape and a summary of experiences/etc. in making the recording is admirable. - An article which contributes to the discussion on the list AND contains a signature file which mentions CD/tape/album availability is acceptable. - Repeated postings saying nothing but "My recording is available" are bad. - Outright ads for records you did not make, hardware, software, used cars, etc. are very bad. 2) Discussions as to the relative merits of hardware/software/etc. are permissible, as long as the reviewers state evidence supporting their opinions. Ad hominem attacks will not be tolerated. Arguments based solely on personal taste are not acceptable. It is preferable to request private mailings, which you can summarize and post back to the list. Reviews are useful. Mutual admiration societies are not. 3) All members *will* be treated with kindness and respect. There is no such thing as a dumb question on this list. If you can answer, answer, and be nice about it. Otherwise, say nothing. If you've got a problem with what someone has had to say, discuss it in a civil manner. If you can't do that, take it to e-mail, or just forget about it. 4) EMUSIC-L is meant to be for the discussion of electronic music, in the studio, the classroom, in performance, and on recordings, including techniques, resources, user reviews and experiences, and speculation on futures. Some divagations will be tolerated, as it's rather nice to have a little humor on the list; however, the list owner(s) (Joe McMahon at the moment) will maintain the final say as to the subject matter on the list and will move to terminate off-topic, pointless, and (especially) rancorous discussions. 5) Please refrain from adding to the noise level by commenting about accidental private posts to the list or the accidental sendings of SUBSCRIBE requests or suchlike to the list. That is the administrators' job. If you must pour out your wounded feelings ;-), either to Joe, or to the offender, use private mail. 6) The listowner(s) are permitted to be as arbitrary as they please. We have only once had to take action against a member of the list for breaking these rules, even when they hadn't been stated explicitly. We will notify offenders via private mail and will wait for a response. But we don't have time to play Politeness and Germaneness Monitors. We will remove users from the list only if we must, and we always give people the benefit of the doubt when possible. But be assured that we will act to preserve the quality of discussion on this list. "How did EMUSIC-L and SYNTH-L start?"************************************** Perhaps a bit of ancient history is in order here, to show where these lists come from and why they are the way they are.... Many moons ago, when there was for all practical purposes no such thing as the Internet (and there were certainly few or no commercial online services), people had access to cyberspace only through a set of large but mutually exclusive network protocols, generally provided by and germane to their place of education or work. One of these was the USENET hierarchy of UNIX machines at universities and laboratories and a few commercial sites; another was BITNET, an international mail system for mainframe computers used by scientists. Communication between the two systems was possible only in a crude and roundabout manner, so they developed separate systems for dealing with the same needs. In a rough, very general sense, USENET developed the news hierarchy and BITNET developed list servers and mailing lists; in the subfield of electronic music, USENET had the once-quite-small newsgroup rec.music.synth and BITNET had EMUSIC-L. The 'feel' of these groups was in concert with the sort of people using them; rec.music.synth was more open, with college students and commercial users, whereas EMUSIC-L tended toward academic users. This tended to shape the level of discussion and the topics covered, but keep in mind that early on, the overlap between the two groups was relatively small. Some time later, as reliable gateways between BITNET and the rest of the growing Internet allowed for the redistribution of newsgroups as mailing lists, SYNTH-L was launched as a gateway of rec.music.synth posts, so BITNET users without USENET access could enjoy the news there. It was a short, hard-learned lesson; the lack of moderation and the huge number of news articles delivered as email (!) knocked many prospective users for a loop. It wasn't all that long before the USENET feed was cut and the gateways to the news hierarchy were removed, isolating SYNTH-L and effectively removing its reason for existence. At that point, with Joe's blessing, Mike stepped in as conceptual 'parent' of SYNTH-L, and began to promote it as a nice middle ground between EMUSIC-L's often rarified discussions and the daily mayhem on rec.music.synth (now rec.music.makers.s). It was semi-moderated, so postings stayed (by and large) polite and focussed, but long discussions of gear, software, technical problems, and so forth that were considered a waste of time by many EMUSIC-L readers were encouraged, and over the years since then a de facto division between the two groups, and a healthy relationship, has settled into place. It's true that the divisions between topics for the two groups are occasionally blurry, but that's something most folks simply learn to live with and get a feel for. "Is SYNTH-L supposed to be technical discussion of synthesizers?"********** "Does EMUSIC-L cover electronic music in general?"************************* Very roughly, SYNTH-L is for the detailed technical talk, like gear for sale, where to download patches, whether synth A is better than synth B (whatever 'better' means), technical problems and solutions, and so on. SYNTH-L is the stuff that people on EMUSIC-L don't want to have to wade through to discuss electronic music. Conversely, EMUSIC-L is for all the serious (and sometimes not so serious) philosophical discussion on electronic music in its widest sense. EMUSIC-L is the stuff that people on SYNTH-L don't want to have to wade through to discuss gear. In both cases, one could say that this sort of discussion has its place, but people sometimes like to see it, and sometimes don't. All the EMUSIC-L/SYNTH-L division purports to do is allow an approximate separation between the snobs and the plebs. Where people take that is up to them. It's true that there seems to be no set focus or set of aims in these lists. That's deliberate. We are like-minded individuals looking for someone intelligent and knowledgeable to talk to, and the topics range all over the place, as well they should in such a forum. One shouldn't expect any kind of focus in an environment where anything is a potential topic for discussion. "What's the point? It's not what I expected!"****************************** The point is that we don't want you to have unreasonable expectations of what EMUSIC-L and SYNTH-L are 'for'; they are what they are, and most people seem content to enjoy them as they are or guide them elsewhere, either for a while or for good... A good starting point for finding out what the electronic music of EMUSIC-L and SYNTH-L is all about is the EMUSIC-L World Wide Web page at: http://sunsite.unc.edu/emusic-l. MAX************************************************************************ "What is MAX, anyway?"***************************************************** MAX is a software toolkit which gives a real-time, interactive, graphical development environment for multimedia, music (and more). Programs are 'written' by connecting together graphical objects, rather than typing text. Typical applications for MAX include: Editors and Librarians for MIDI equipment; Compositional Tools; Utilities for analysing musical performance; and much more. MAX is often mentioned in these lists. It currently exists in variants for the Unix environment and on the Apple Macintosh, although a petition has been mentioned within these lists for a Windows version - contact JOEL STERN on stern@email.loc.gov or j.stern11@geis.genie.com for details. For more information on the Macintosh version, you should try contacting your nearest Opcode dealer. (Opcode distribute MAX for the Mac). Opcode also have a World Wide Web page at : http://www.rahul.net/opcode/index.html. There is also a MAX listserv. Send a message to listserv@vm1.mcgill.ca with a Subject of: Subscribe Max, and the message text: SUBSCRIBE MAX You will then receive daily digests of postings to the MAX list. MUSIC MAILING LISTS******************************************************** "Anyone know a good MUSIC discussion group on ?"********* The best place for discussion of almost any group, band, artiste, performer, musician (you get the idea), is the Usenet newsgroups. Try: alt.fan. MESSAGES******************************************************************* "Should I respond to a message on the list?"******************************* The whole point of this list is that we attract people who are smart enough to make these decisions for themselves, and do. You can be one of them, if you let yourself. Think and decide for yourself, make mistakes, correct them, learn, move on, and enjoy the trip. Or, if you're paralyzed by fear of doing or saying something wrong, you can choose to lurk forever. Please also read the "So, can I post anything I feel like?" 'Rules' section of this document before posting anything to the list. "How do I send a message to the list?"************************************* For EMUSIC-L, you send your posting to emusic-l@american.edu. It will be automatically sent to all of the other subscribers. You will not receive a copy of your own mail; LISTSERV does this to decrease mail traffic. For SYNTH-L, you send your posting to synth-l@american.edu. Should I reply to the List or the Author?********************************** Questions posted by people who are not long-term subscribers to a mailing list often say something like 'please reply privately' or 'please respond off-list'. This usually has two effects: (1) Probably lots of repetition in the responses! (2) The rest of the list never hearing about what might be an interesting topic. Replies are a valuable asset to the list members! So an unsubscribed person contributes very little to the list, and probably wastes quite a lot of time sorting through the responses. An unsubscribed person is also unlikely to post a summary of the received replies back to the list. Edited summaries can be very valuable assets to the list members. Unless a response is really private in content, it is probably best to post it to the List, not the Author. This encourages people to subscribe; provides a wide variety of potentially useful information; and discourages unsubscribed people from posting queries to a list. Most importantly, it is often replies to a question which trigger off some of the most useful discussions. Replying privately just short-circuits this process. Sometimes adverts are posted to the SYNTH-L list (EMUSIC-L does not welcome adverts) as part of a 'shotgun' approach, where all the music-related lists and newsgroups receive the same advert. In this case it is best to reply directly to the Author of the original advert rather than the List. Off-topic advertisements, chain letters, and other annoyances will be dealt with by the list administrators. There is no need to reply to or comment on these - it just adds extra 'noise' to the mailing list. The SYNTH-L and EMUSIC-L mailing lists went to 'subscriber-posting-only' on the 6th of July 1995. This means that postings are only accepted from people who have formally subscribed to the lists. This will not prevent all adverts, chain letters etc (see above), but it should help to keep the list clear of many of them. "Where is the archive of FAQs kept?"*************************************** This is a new document (as of May 1995). As the maintainer adds new questions this document will be revised, and some questions and answers may be removed. You will be able to ftp the full FAQ file from the Internet. SUBSCRIPTIONS************************************************************** "How do I unsubscribe?"**************************************************** For EMUSIC-L, you send mail to listserv@american.edu with the text UNSUB EMUSIC-L as the body. No special subject is required. For SYNTH-L, you send mail to listserv@american.edu with the text UNSUB SYNTH-L as the body. Again, no special subject is required. If this does not work, you will get a message saying that no entry was found for your ID. Please contact Joe McMahon (mcmahon@CLARK.NET) directly. Do *NOT* post unsubscribe messages to the list. They don't help, and simply irritate other readers. AOL subscribers may experience some problems with unsubscribing from the listserv. This may be a communications problem or an incompatibility... If you cannot unsubscribe then please save any messages that you may receive from the listserv and send them to Joe McMahon (mcmahon@CLARK.NET). "How do I subscribe?"****************************************************** To join the discussion group on a message-by-message basis, send a mail message to listserv@american.edu with the text SUB EMUSIC-L where "" is your actual first and last name (at a minimum; LISTSERV insists on at least two blank-separated words here). Do not send subscription requests to the list address, as they only serve to annoy the other list members. For SYNTH-L, you do exactly the same, but replace the text 'EMUSIC-L' with 'SYNTH-L'. "How do I subscribe to the daily digest?"********************************** If you would like to get daily digests of the mail to EMUSIC-L, send the following mail to listserv@american.edu: SUB EMUSIC-L SET EMUSIC-L DIGEST where "" should be replaced by your first and last name (at a minimum; LISTSERV insists on at least two blank-separated words here). Note that these two commands should be on separate lines: SUB EMUSIC-L SET EMUSIC-L DIGEST so that the listserv will interpret them correctly. Do not send subscription requests to the list address, as they only serve to annoy the otherlist members. For SYNTH-L, you do exactly the same, but replace the text 'EMUSIC-L' with 'SYNTH-L'. "How do I unsubscribe from the full list and subscribe to the digest?"***** If you would like to get daily digests of the mail to EMUSIC-L instead of the message-by-message form, just send the following mail to listserv@american.edu: SET EMUSIC-L DIGEST You will then get one message per day, which consists of a list of topics, followed by all the messages which have been posted in the previous 24 hours. For SYNTH-L, you do exactly the same, but replace the text 'EMUSIC-L' with 'SYNTH-L'. AOL subscribers may experience some problems in changing their subscription details via the listserv. This may be a communications problem or an incompatibility... If you cannot change to a digest then please save any messages that you may receive from the listserv and send them to Joe McMahon (mcmahon@CLARK.NET). The Alesis Quadra Synth plus is fully multitimbral, has four discreet effects sends for true multi effects, 64-voice polyphony, and 20 or so megs of onboard ROM waves and will let you send your own samples into it via SDS using Alesis' SoundBridge (Macintosh) software. Up to eight megs worth stored on a PCMCIA card in the card slot on the rear or face of the unit (depending on configuration). I found all this quite compelling. As long as you've got a way to sample and edit (another stand alone unit or a Mac with a Digidesign card), you're in the following business for VERY little outlay: 64-voice user definable sample playback device with four seperate effects available simultaneously and a synth engine with myriad possibilities to treat your samples. It's not a K2000, but's it's cheap and suits the needs of many (plus the samples will be on a card..No loading heehee). You asked about the plot of my musical? Well as I say it is a children's musical and I''ve decided to keep it at one act and about an hour and a half. This is for the benefit of parents that don't enjoy their children's company during intermission. The plot is very simple with allowance for some fantasy to enter but is a grounded enough in reality to derive a moral that will of course emerge as the theme of the play (one of). Two brothers feel that one is favored over the other one, and mystically (actually I know the vehicle, it will have to be a surprise to everyone when they see it) the least favored kid receives a power. This power of sorts provides him the ability to bring most of his thoughts into reality, and slowly he tries to build around him the perfect world and learns that experience is the best foundation and wishing life away will only end it sooner and with a shallow pool of wisdom. He finally erases the wishes and makes a final wish - that his brother and he receive equal treatment (aka mom and dad stop favoring). The reason I chose wishes and the like (it is substantially different from Aladdin and we won't refer to the things as wishes, and there are ZERO lamps and genies) is because I want the option to dive into some fairy tale scenes and songs but I want a modern story line with characters that are relatable. Like a cool after school special that doesn't suck, doesn't have paper cutout Ward and June parents, yet with music that actually propels the plot and dance that isn't too Peter Pan/Ballet for the boys but is satisfactory for the girls. I ALSO want this to have more layers than the surface because the adults will need something to challenge them....even if they don't I wanna make my high school teacher look like she knew what she was talking about when she told our class that every story has some degree of symbolism. whew Feedback? We at NoHarmDone publications & Internationale Stadt e.V. are proud to announce the birth & existence of ARCANA - the FIRST information resource in the World Wide Web for contemporary, experimental & unusual music emerging from Germany and the first of its kind in Germany, too. We feature a constantly growing information resource of contemporary music and detailed musical material, produced and composed by composers and groups based in Germany. WHAT CAN I FIND THERE? ARCANA provides onscreen display of representative excerpts of musical scores & graphics as well as downloading possibilities of digitized sound excerpts and MIDI files - all build in in lively worklists of interesting artists. Nothing gives you a better idea about an unknown musical work than listening to a one minute performance excerpt or taking a look at the score. If a recording of the work is unavailable, because it might still be available for a world premiere, we try to make a standard MIDI version of the score available to you. Various kinds of textual information about non-established, young composers are available. This includes bios, future plans, review, work comments, work lists and much more... Photographs of performance situations are available already and we are working on the implementation of short video excerpts of performances. In the future we will include a software library for d.i.y.-composing software and MAX patches. Reprints and excerpts of selected articles of renown German music magazines are to come. An FTP-able archive for scores & images is projected. WHY SHOULD I USE THE ARCANA SERVICE? We are working hard to become THE INTERNET REFERENCE for new music emerging from Germany. That means that ARCANA is an excellent tool for your musical programming and/or talent search. In addition, ARCANA is maintained by artists for artists which means that we have a strong link to the musical underground - the source where all future talents emerge from. If you are working in the music industry, e.g. as an A&R executive, a record producer, a director of a concert hall, theatre, dance group, ensemble or opera house, or if are just somebody who is looking for unperformed works or is just merely interested in contemporary music, ARCANA puts you in touch with composers you may have never heard of before. If they have an email address - you can directly contact them. If they don't have an email address you may email to ARCANA or phone/write them directly. Looking at their scores gives you detailed information about their work - fast! You're not wasting time contacting someone who turns out to write some totally different music than you expected. Use the information ARCANA offers to focus the contacts you want to make for your future musical programming or festival artist selection. CAN I USE ARCANA FOR MY OWN MUSICAL INTEREST? Music Industry Yes you can! ARCANA offers you an excellent advertising site for all kinds of music related advertising in the German new music market. It is open for labels, publishers, individual artists, etc. Announce your function in the wide world of music within a framework which is totally devoted to a crowd of contemporary music fanatics. If you run a WWW site by yourself, let us know and we include you in our "Window to the World" Contact the ARCANA staff at the address below for advertising rates and modalities! Composers If you are a composer and you are interested in registering your work with ARCANA contact the ARCANA staff at the address below for registration information or use the registration form which is included in the ARCANA homepage. However, for now, you have to have some kind of German base to be elegible for registration. No musical limitations are made, except that your work has to be somehow "contemporary" while not mainstream. Competitions, Festivals, Concerts ARCANA is currently developing a calendar of new music events in Germany. If you are touring through Germany announce your tour dates in ARCANA! We are also curious to learn about Festival announcements and international composition competitions as well as calls for musical scores. NEWSFLASH If you want to subscribe to the bi-monthly ARCANA email newsflash send an email to: stuermer@contrib.de or to arcana@contrib.de Starting August 1, 1995 the newsflash will be published every 2 months. Hi. I can't say I'm a great specialist in that, but as far as I know, it is possible anyway. It is yet impossible to synthesize a human voice, even a long single note absolutely exact. I know this because some time ago I was going to make a system that recognize simple commands given by voice and ignoring other sounds. Only a few organs can sound like human voice (one is in Holland, I guess). And voice could be differed from music using mentioned Fourie method, and the time characteristicks of frequiency diagramm calculated by it. > I wouldn't mind listening to 'pure' music of my favourite songs, > also using them to perform etc. But it just isn't possible. Concerning distorting your favourite music: Yesterday I was listening a half-dead radio in the train. The song was badly distorted, and half of instrumentals was just skipped. Assidentally I heared a melody that absolutely another our local city group uses it it's song, but using another instruments. -- Dmitry Romakhin. ========================================================================= Date: Fri, 14 Jul 1995 15:39:43 -0400 Reply-To: Electronic Music Discussion List Sender: Electronic Music Discussion List From: "Matthew W. There is no working title becuase I'm barely into the book. I spent a few weeks on character development and wrote some lengthy bios (not like thirty pages, just some histories that give them a life in my mind and also allow me to visualize their setting a little better). The plot outline is stlil slowly taking place, hopefully the meat of the dialogue and all will take off quickly and I can begin to compose a wee bit. Did you write book and music? Is it a 'book musical' or 'concept musical?' or is it sung through (ala Les Mis)...and what style is your music? I'm about to throw six hundred questions at you because I'm very curious about how you went through the process....so, with no fear of being intrusive or overbearing (and no fear of digressing from the EMUSIC topic...I'll tie it together somehow) here is the list of questions that I'd love to hear elaborations.... (a good journalist never asks close ended questions unless he wants one specific answer confirmed) Is this a collaboration? What was your process? By this I mean did you work the musical out on paper and then slowly start playing around with stuff and develop the plot through outlines, or is it very spontaneous? In between? What style of music and how much? How many acts? You're recording, how did you find vocalists (perhaps question 1 will answer this). Is this your first? What other projects have you done? What is your background? How old are you? What was your 'seed' that inspired you to write about this? Are you into musical theatre enough to have a favorite composer or show? I'm seeing _A Funny Thing..._ tonight, never seen a Sondheim live (lie, I saw _Into The Woods_ so forget that last comment). What are you sequencing on? How 'bout this: tell me all you can stand to type and all you are willing to share with a colleague, or peer, or whatever... whew, poor you...I just get wild when I think about taking an idea and seeing it materialize onstage...what channels are you gonna use to get it produced? Who is your target audience (marketing talk in a way)... okay, no more, I'll hide the computer keyboard from myself until I can ask no more questions... thanks for putting up with all that, Randy ========================================================================= Date: Sat, 15 Jul 1995 05:22:31 -0400 Reply-To: Electronic Music Discussion List Sender: Electronic Music Discussion List From: Dustin McIntyre Subject: Re: Mace:Which sampler and why? >>I'm certainly interested and it doesn't bore me. I wrote one song, the law school blues while attending U san Deigo law school ,circa 1976 SOmeone said why don't you write a musical,So I did. I finished the music in 1984. I got serious about doing the scenes last year. I made a plan and began writing the scenes in the morning. I finished the manuscript in may,95. I've been using MAster tracks for sequencing and Music time for notation. I bought both programs in February I've been learning by doing. I brought the sequences into a studio(They need work) and recorded a scratch track-Me doing all the vocals-very rough. I've given this scratch track to my vocalists-All friends of mine. I hope to rehearse a few times out of the studio then do it with one 6 hr recording session. The story revolves around the trials and tribulations of 10 (m&F) law students,Sally Space-ace,TOny ZOned,Betty Lierated,Sammy Saxophone-The characters are drawn from people(or amalgamations) that I've known. I plan to have it produced first in LAs Vegas and then eventually on Broadway. I hope this answers most of your questions, If you have any more specifics- Fire Away. I will send you a disc when it's finished. My next project after some well deserved R & R is to put in a home music studio. Keep those creative juices flowing ,Mace
