Hello....

Looking for a Lexicon LXP-15 II or a DigiTech studio quad 4. Must be in
perfect working order, cosmetic blemishes OK. Please email me with an
asking price.

Also - the main use I have for this box is doing delays, and I need adjustment
from 15-250 millisec, in steps of 1msec. If you happen to know if that can't
be done with the Lex or the studio quad pls. let me know! I have been unable
to find detailed info on either of them.

thanks in advance-

Might I suggest a train of thought on this subject?

A new power strip costs about $15 or so. The equipment you are protecting by
using a surge protector strip would cost how much to replace if an
electrical surge hit? If you have a doubt about the power strip just replace
the thing!

Don't worry about cleaning contacts or adjusting ramaflamits it isn't worth
the risk if it doesn't work. Besides a lot of manufacterers of these strips
are now offering thousands of dollars in payback if ther strip should fail &
your equipment gets damaged.

Yeah, but who'd want to listen to it??? :-)

But seriously-- sure...since music is just ordered sound, one doesn't have to
have near-perfect listening/hearing ability to use the left side of the brain;
however, I doubt that a tone-deaf person would have the same unquenchable drive
to create music as a non-tone deaf person does. I may be wrong, but even if
they did want to, I don't think the emotional aspect from the pitch would be
there; rhythm would predominate. That is, if all tones sound the same to a
person (and therefore are arbitrary to them), the scalar aspect of sound would
be ignored, and perhaps only the emotional aspect of rhythm would be there.

I think of it as analogous to a completely color-blind person (very rare, BTW)
who sees only in shades of grey and does oil painting using all the colors in
the spectrum.

Subject: Re: Power strip light flickering (?)

Hi,
There are many different power strip designs. The instructions that
come with them should cover what to do, if anything, when light or
lights flicker.
Depending on what brand and model of power strip you have,
flickering lights could mean.
Replace power strip fuse, bad outlet, uneven local ac dirty power, a
power surge tripped the power strip circuit-if your strip is a one
surge only kind, its time to get a new one.
Too much plugged into the strip, too much line interference, need to
reset the power strip. Some strips, if the light goes out entirely, its
time to get a new one.
Flickering power strips lights are calling for your attention.
So, save those power strip instructions in a binder.
And when in doubt, toss your old ones and just get another.
Kmart or someone always has them for $5 or $6.
   Happy Emusic

In the same rational, If everyone was born with
perfect pitch, then everyone would be able to
learn perfect pitch later. I was born with it,
and I've still got it (thank god!), but I couldn't
teach it to my friends if my life depended on it.
Even if they were able to learn it, I think that

....I'm back!

After a two-month hiatus to move across the USA and change jobs, I've
finally cleared off enough time to get back into the swing of things
here on EMUSIC-L; and just in time too, since Joe is getting ready to
leave the lists for several weeks. I can't promise that my responses
to individual pleas for help will be as quick, effective, and
courteous as Joe's are, but I'll try. Please bear with me, and if
you're reading this, Ronin, can I ask the occasional server-related
question? :)

For those of you who subscribed within the past two months, let me
introduce myself. My name is Mike Metlay, and I am the once and future
co-moderator of EMUSIC-L and SYNTH-L (and was the conceptual father of
SYNTH-L in its current form). I read and post often, deliver all sorts
of pithy technical advice (much of it timely and some of it even
correct) and do my best to maintain order and smooth flow of ideas
here on the lists. I won't bother with the rest of the credentials.
Just be aware that I have the same powers and privileges as Joe, and
am equally willing and (almost) equally able to help those in need.
List members with complaints or requests can always feel free to
email me. My policies on these lists are not materially different
from Joe's, but my enforcement of same can be less pleasant than his.

I'm going to be fairly quiet for a few days, until I get caught up on
current threads and/or see a need to launch one or two of my own.
In the meantime, play nice, and it really is good to be back.

Anyone heard of Florence Foster Jennings (or was it Jenkins)? She was
a music lover/musician wannabee with far more money and "unquenchable
drive" than talent. To be charitable, she was as tone-deaf as a cement
block. She would hire professionals to accompany her as she sang (or
attempted to sing) classical showpieces. Some recordings (from the
1930s, I think) have survived; listening to her doing The Magic Flute is
one of the gutbustingly funniest things I've ever heard. Her recordings
are the perfect tonic for those times when you've convinced yourself
that you're completely lacking in musical talent.

And I'm led to believe she played to packed houses (Carnegie Hall?) for
precisely this reason.

Hi Brian,

Next question: how do we obtain this recording?

Talk about funny recording's - this goes way back, during the time of 78RPM
recordings - about the same era as Florence. The O'keh (sp?) laughing
records are hilarious! My dad had one. I remember hearing it played often
as I grew up, mostly during parties - the recording got everyone "busting a
gut," you couldn't help but laugh too. It started with a trumpet player
playing a solo, and it moved along pretty good. Then the guy would blow a
bad note, and a woman started to giggle. The trumpet player would start
over. He'd hit another "klinker" (klinker is a brass player's word meaning
"possible lip bleed). Then a man would join with the woman and both would
laugh, just a little at first, but then it would build. By the time the
record ended, everyone is rolling - gut wrenching laughter! Anyone know
where I can get a recording of any of the O'keh laughing record series let
me know. My dads's copy was broken in a move, and is gone forever.

I've gotten some info on the infamous Ms. Jenkins from my colleague
Lowell Cross. There is an RCA LP or her "renditions", and it may have
been released on CD as well.

Lowell reminded me of a few riotous stories about Ms. Jenkins as well;
after being injured in a NYC taxicab accident, she discovered that as a
result of the accident, she "could sing a higher E than ever before."
For this reason, she sent the cab drive a box of cigars, rather than
bringing a lawsuit.

As a regular feature of her concerts, she would throw roses into the
audience at the end of the show. If she ran out of roses, she would send
her pianist, a certain Mr. Cosme McMoon (sp?) into the audience to fetch
the roses so that she could throw them out there all over again.

ObEmusic: I haven't heard the recordings myself, but it sounds to me
like granular synthesis should let her sing again!

It wouldn't surprise me. RCA released archives of all kinds of stuff
from its old vinyl libraries, up to and including a record of music by
Neil Hefti, of all people. It's a collection of the many famous themes
he composed and conducted for the TV series "Batman," featuring "Evil
Plot To Blow Up Batman", "Eivel Ekdol The Albanian Genius", and "The
Batusi." The theme recorded on the record unfortunately is not
identical to the one actually used for the opening credits, but it's
still enough to make your head explode if you listen to too much of
it. (I think it was rereleased as part of the sudden academic/art-
world/pop-kitsch crossover of artists like Ken Nordine and Juan
Garcia Esquivel.)

Brass players have a whole lexicon of mistakes, e.g. "frack", "biff",
"spleeyuh", etc. ad nauseum. IMO physical modeling can't be considered
fully successful until it can duplicate these with enough accuracy that
you feel compelled to sponge off the back wall of the room after

Music space Studio under Pc music forum. Midi files are located under
software. There are hundreds of midi files there. Also, use a web browser and
search for midi. You should come up with many sites. Good Luck.

I've only briefly played a Wavedrum at AES, so my impressions are of a very
short experience. I found the range of expression on the Wavedrum to
be more limited than acoustic drums I normally play (doubek, djembe, tabla).
I also found that it doesn't trigger, or seems to muffle very fast playing.
I'd like to hear from those who've had longer to play with it.
I'd also be curious to know if it is possible to mount it to a
shell so I could play it sideways over my lap like a doumbek.

I take it that this was issued in the U.S.

English subscribers might remember The Laughing Policeman on 78 from about
50 years ago. It was reissued on a 45 about 20 years ago. Like the one you
mention it was a great record for parties and everyone would finish up
rolling about the floor.

There was also a record called Laughter and Lemons (it might have been the B
side of the Laughing Policeman.) It started off with a cornet or euphonium
solo and then the sound of a small child sucking a lemon. This apparently
caused the player's mouth to water and the rendition went downhill from there.

All of this brings up an interesting question: Were "Laughing Records" so
popular at that time that every country had one? Were there
French,German,Swedish laughing records? .....Indian?..Chinese? the mind boggles

What an idea for a record re-issue - Laughing Records of the World!

I don't know about laughing records, but an examination of Dick Spottswood's
incredible discography, Ethnic Music on Records, reveals that at about the
same time, many of the major ethnic groups in this country were very taken
with recordings featuring whistlers. I came across one marketed to both
Jews and Rumanians, with a guy whistling a doina with full orchestral
accompaniment -- what a concept!

Friend in the UK,

For what you pay of a Fatar (which I have played), you can pick up a Kurzweil
or simular GOOD QUALITY used keyboard which will actually give you some
additional sounds.

Good luck!
