Subject: New Yamaha soundcards for PC ?

Hello,

I'm going to buy a new soundcard for my PC and would like to know which one
is the most valuable card in terms of quality of sounds and versatility of
use. I currently own AWE32 which isn't comparable (it's ROM samples) with
almost any soundmodule on the market. I would like to get rid of it, as I
heard about new series of Yamaha SW?-70 cards which seemed to be much
better, the GM & XG implementation should conform to MU80 module as well as
the FX section. It is also told to be able to download samples into onboard
memory (SIMMS?).
As I live in the Europe, the price here would be probably a little different
from the US price, but it would give me a clue, what can I expect.

Perhaps I'd want too much, but doesn't it also emulate some of the standard
soundcards, so that I could use it also for games? If not, nevermind, I can
get a SB16 compatible card for $50 or so.

Is there any other card you would recommend?

                                                        Miro

Arrrgh! Another luminary succumbs to the passage of time....:(

I highly recommend finding stuff of Druckman's on Nonesuch and other
labels; in particular, Nonesuch H-71253 has his utterly absorbing
piece "Synapse-->Valentine," featuring visceral electronics and
Alvin Brehm beating the crap out of a poor innocent contrabass.
The other piece on that disc, "Animus III" for clarinet and tape/
feedback, works less well, but is still a fascinating bit of history.

I guess my gripe is that I don't have the time to learn confusing
interfaces these days. Life's too short and there are too many fun
things to spend time on instead, like programming the Xpander or
the Prophecy or actually recording some MUSIC...?

Another point of departure: wheels above the keyboard don't bother me
very much. My Alesis QS6 has them laid out this way, as did my DX11,
and I really didn't feel they were awkward. Maybe it's 'cause I'm
such a knuckle dragger as it is.

That's what he meant, all right. I find that interesting, since the A-80,
for all its menues, has a large and clear LCD display....

By no means. They've really gotten their act together in the past
two to three years; the D-70's manual is patehtically bad, but the
VS-880's is excellent.

Well excuse me if I'm wrong, you have an AWE32, but are thinking of buying an
SB16 compatible. I do agree that the AWE32 is not a brilliant wave-table
card, but since Creative-Labs are the industry leaders in sound cards (and
the industry standard), everyone thinks their cards are the best on the
market. Also very expensive. Everyone I know who has one thinks they are
brilliant, but I only know one person with one, but he has 4 computers, 3 of
them with AWE32 cards, and he wouldn't buy different. I have an Ensoniq
Soundscape Elite card, which is fairly expensive, but has great sampling and
playback quality. I have not yet heard the Yamaha cards, but know, on the
English market, they are around #200 (that's about $280), but most are
packaged with an 8 speed CD drive.

HELLO all e-music people...!

About dealing with sound files: we usually find -digitalized sound-
files, like .wav, .vox , .voc.... , based on a taking of samples at a
extreme speed ( I refer to the 44.1 khz), and therefore a extreme memory
waste too, on the other hand we have midi files, memory saving, time
non-depending files, to catch till the most difficult musical works....
But let's talk about the Amiga mod file, it's an hibryd of the two types,
sincerely the true mods gave certain restrictions about the sampling of
instruments..., but with extended mods, we've now the chance of purify
our sound to the maximum quality, and take it up and down with the
-frecuency tables- ,
I guess one can do professional works with a Mod editor,( of course if
able to sample up to 44.1 and also to play or mix at 44.1 too), 'cause
one can sample "anything" and play it on different pitches and time,
moreover one can include human voices on the songs....etc
WHAT DO You think of make professional music songs with modules, likely
for a CD product ?????

Has somebody worked or dealed with xm's, I've the idea to include them in
Multimedia presentations, due to the flexibility of the sound ( I think
it's like an ever modify-able Wave table or sampler ) but the players
I've seen on windows platform doesn't allow XM's, it's ever for mods and
s3m's,.... and those were the just 4 channels songs, moreover the xm
player editors always require all the memory for them only, and don't
accept the windows' smartdrive.

I've seen windows software for MIDI sequencing, midi composing,
soundwaves edition, and Multimedia which works with the internal synth or
with waves, but what about xm's....??????

If you know something, I'll thank you lots & lots....
 Bye

I'm compiling a list of ways in which mathematics can be applied to music.
All suggestions, however improbable, for this list will be welcomed.

An early thought is that the list will have two main subdivisions:

1. instances of a mathematical idea being given a non-rigorous, poetic
interpretation through some musical procedure; and

2. examples of mathematical facts that are rigorously modelled by some
aspect of music.

If you have ideas on this that you would be willing to share, please
let me know.

Many thanks -

Yes, I do a lot of XM's too...
I definetely think they're a much cheaper alternative to all this expensive
MIDI stuff, especially for poor pupils like me...I have done some HipHop,
Jungle and
many other styles too in this format...
There's one player for Windows: MOD4WIN which supports the XM format too..
Also, Cubic Player should work under Windows, although it's a DOS program..
Another thing to say is, that some coderz are already working on trackers,
which can play General MIDI AND digitized samples at the same time. That
would then definetely be a good alternative to MIDI only..
PS: You can get the newest versions of all tracker/player and other
programs of that area on the FTP-Site HORNET(FTP.CDROM.COM)...
Just try it...

Stefan..
