Can anybody send me any info about Kawai GMEGA LX module. I've seen
it advertised in mag for 170 quids. Is it worth it ? Does it have any
effects built in ? Are the sounds editable ?

Thanks in advance, Martin.

Any recommendations?
Would like to find a current book(s) which covers the basics of audio,
along with the various methods of synthesis and sampling.

My education is in the arcane field of physics, so no need to fear
recommending titles with impressive graphs, terrifying equations, or
hieroglyphic circuit and logic diagrams.

Hi All,
   The classic
The Secrets of Analog and Digital Synthesis by Steve De Furia
is ten years old. Does a good job of explaining the basics.
There are 3 or 4 versions out of David Hubers books on Digital
Audio, just recently updated again.
Mix Bookshelf has a good selection of various synth and sound texts.
MicroCenter stocks many of them in its multimedia book section,
including the $50 ones and ones from Europe.

Hi Zenon...

That's a big ask. Each of these is a big enough field in itself. But
(he said diving in head-first), I'd recommend the following:

Ballou, Glen (ed.)(1991) Handbook for Sound engineers: The New Audio
Cyclopedia, 2nd ed. SAMS.

It's mostly audio with a bit on digital synthesis and MIDI. Also has
lots of stuff on recording and not just how the gear works, including
accounts of famous engineers' sessions. A massive tome, and at US$100
not cheap, but definitely a good read.

SUBSCRIPTIONS##############################################################

##"What do I need to remember?"############################################

Either keep these FAQs, or remember just this:

You send subscription-related mail messages to listserv@american.edu

(Do NOT send them to EMUSIC-L@american.edu or SYNTH-L@american.edu)

##"How do I unsubscribe?"##################################################

For EMUSIC-L, you send mail to listserv@american.edu with the text

UNSUB EMUSIC-L

as the body. No special subject is required.

For SYNTH-L, you send mail to listserv@american.edu with the text

UNSUB SYNTH-L

as the body. Again, no special subject is required.

If this does not work, you will get a message saying that no entry was
found for your ID. Please contact Joe McMahon (mcmahon@CLARK.NET) or Mike
Metlay <atomic@NETCOM.COM> directly.

Please, do *NOT* post unsubscribe messages to the list. They don't help, and
simply irritate other readers.

AOL subscribers may experience some problems with unsubscribing from the
listserv. This may be a communications problem or an incompatibility... If
you cannot unsubscribe then please save any messages that you may receive
from the listserv and send them to Joe McMahon (mcmahon@CLARK.NET).

##"How do I subscribe?"####################################################

To join the discussion group on a message-by-message basis, send a mail
message to listserv@american.edu with the text

SUB EMUSIC-L <your name>

where "<your name>" is your actual first and last name (at a minimum;
LISTSERV insists on at least two blank-separated words here). Do not send
subscription requests to the list address, as they only serve to annoy the
other list members.

For SYNTH-L, you do exactly the same, but replace the text 'EMUSIC-L' with
'SYNTH-L'.

##"How do I subscribe to the daily digest?"################################

If you would like to get daily digests of the mail to EMUSIC-L, send the
following mail to listserv@american.edu:

SUB EMUSIC-L <your name>
SET EMUSIC-L DIGEST

where "<your name>" should be replaced by your first and last name (at a
minimum; LISTSERV insists on at least two blank-separated words here). Note
that these two commands should be on separate lines: SUB EMUSIC-L <your
name><CR> SET EMUSIC-L DIGEST<CR> so that the listserv will interpret them
correctly.

Do not send subscription requests to the list address, as they only serve
to annoy the otherlist members.

For SYNTH-L, you do exactly the same, but replace the text 'EMUSIC-L' with
'SYNTH-L'.

##"How do I unsubscribe from the full list and subscribe to the digest?"###

If you would like to get daily digests of the mail to EMUSIC-L instead of
the message-by-message form, just send the following mail message to
listserv@american.edu:

SET EMUSIC-L DIGEST

You will then get one message per day, which consists of a list of topics,
followed by all the messages which have been posted in the previous 24
hours.

For SYNTH-L, you do exactly the same, but replace the text 'EMUSIC-L' with
'SYNTH-L'.

AOL subscribers may experience some problems in changing their subscription
details via the listserv. This may be a communications problem or an
incompatibility... If you cannot change to a digest then please save any
messages that you may receive from the listserv and send them to Joe
McMahon (mcmahon@CLARK.NET).

##"But I prefer to get messages as they arrive!"###########################

If you would like to get mail as it arrives at EMUSIC-L instead of in the
collected/digest form, just send the following mail message to
listserv@american.edu:

SET EMUSIC-L MAIL

For SYNTH-L, you do exactly the same, but replace the text 'EMUSIC-L' with
'SYNTH-L'.

##"Why don't I see my own postings to the list?"###########################

If you don't see their own postings, you might be tempted to re-post when
in fact, there may be nothing wrong at all. There are a number of options
which determine how your mailings are sent.

You can check your subscription options by sending the following message to
listserv@american.edu:

QUERY EMUSIC-L

For SYNTH-L, you do exactly the same, but replace the text 'EMUSIC-L' with
'SYNTH-L'.
(Please do NOT send to EMUSIC-L@american.edu or SYNTH-L@american.edu!)

This generates a reply like this:

Subscription options for Andrew N. Other <otheran@who.where.net>, list
EMUSIC-L:

MAIL You are sent individual postings as they are received

FULLHDR Full (normal) mail headers (formerly "FULLBSMTP")

NOREPRO You do not receive a copy of your own postings

NOACK No acknowledgement of successfully processed postings

CONCEAL        Your subscription is concealed from non-privileged users;
note that posting to the list will reveal your presence

In this case the option NOREPRO is set: ie Andrew does not get copies of
his own postings sent to him. This is the default for subscribers, so
you won't get copies of your own posts when you sign on the list. If you
want to change this, send the following command to listserv@american.edu:

SET EMUSIC-L REPRO

For SYNTH-L, you do exactly the same, but replace the text 'EMUSIC-L' with
'SYNTH-L'.
The listserver should then send you your new subscription options.

##"Is there a quick reference card?"#######################################

There is a listserver reference card, which gives details of how to do the
above and more. This can be obtained by sending the following command to
listserv@american.edu:

INFO REFCARD

The listserver will then send you a file of the commands that you can use
with the list.

One of the questions asked in the trivia contest is

What is the name brand of the synthesizer Dennis DeYoung made
famous when he introduced it on The Grand Illusion album in 1977?

1. Oberheim
2. Yamaha
3. Kurzweil
4. Uberfleisch

I think they used an OBX or OBXA for Too Much Time on My Hands from Paradise
Theatre, but that was much later than Grand Illusion.

Interestingly enough, the liner notes from the Grand Illusion CD make
reference to an Arp Odyssey on Come Sail Away.

Any IDeas ?

   Hi y'all-

I've been using MIDI for a long time, but I'm new to this algocomp thing, and
new to this list.

I have M and Music Mouse (for Mac), and these are both pretty cool, and have
gotten me interested in trying out other programs.

I'm not looking for an algocomp program to spit out a *finished* product, but
rather to give me a starting point, a new idea, a seed, an unexpected twist,
that I can import into my sequencer and *fix*.

I have a demo version of Upbeat - does anyone know if the full version is
still available.
I have a demo version of Jam Factory but I can't open it, it crashes my Mac -
IIsi, System 7.1 - does anyone know why, and is the full version of this still
available.
I used to have Cybernetic Composer (v. 0.94 or something) but I could never
get it to work right. Is a *working* version available anywhere?
I've heard of a new program called Common Music, but I don't know where to
find it??
I downloaded a demo version of Symbolic Composer, but the demo doesn't let
you actually do anything (except *look* at it), what does this program sound
like?
I've heard of Fractal Music, Algocomp, Music Sculptor???... are these Mac
programs, and where can I find them?

Are there any other cool programs (hopefully not too expensive) that I should
know about?? How are some of the commercial programs, like Band-in-a-Box, MiBAC
Jazz, are these worth messin' with.
   Thanks muchly....

Hi Scott...

Some might be interested to know that these are still available. Scott
didn't say whether his copies were new. Laurie Spiegel has it on her
home page (whoops, that's Music Mouse):

    http://sun.goddard.edu/students/wgdr/kalvos/spiegel.html

M is not being maintained, but recent exchanges on the MAX mailing list
revealed that the Electronic Music Foundation is selling it because it
is "historically important". Only about US$25, I thinko

> I have a demo version of Jam Factory but I can't open it, it crashes my Mac

It may be that this is no longer maintained. As it is, we don't know
how much longer M will run -- it has been known to be flaky on Macs
running 7.1 or higher and certain video cards.

> Common Music

If I remember correctly, this might require you to buy a particular Lisp
compiler (MCL I think), which itself is about $500.

> Symbolic Composer [...] what does this program sound like?

Well, whatever MIDI box you plug in! (Now I'm being facetious!) It handles
MIDI. As for what it _does_, that's harder to gauge. I have seen
references to it here and there, so you might try a web search.

At this point, I'd like to make a tribute to the Australia telco Telstra
for not only having the stupidest name of any telco on the planet, but also
the dirtiest phone lines in the civilized world.

Hence, my reply to Scott's algo-comp enquiry was cut short. Now, where
was I?

> Are there any other cool programs (hopefully not too expensive)

Opcode's MAX. You've already said you have a Mac. Your IIsi should
be able to handle it. MAX has a graphical environment which allows you
to string together various objects (functions). You have objects which
get MIDI in and out of your system, do arithmetic and mathematical functions,
group and ungroup data, store data in various ways, generate data in
various ways. oIf you're a serious programmer, you can even write
your own external objects and add fucntionality. One programmer,
the venerable James McCartney (author of the recent PowerMac synthesis
engine SuperCollider) has even written an object which contains an
embedded programming language.

There's a mailing list for MAX (partly because we MAX owners are so into
it that we want to help one another and talk about MAX, and partly because
this prodcut is so off-the-wall compared to Opcode's regular stuff that
they almost don't know what it is and provide bugger-all tech support!).
There are archives of patches and objects at U.Iowa, IRCAM and UCSD,
downloadable via ftp. In short, very cool.

Stay on this list for long enough, and you'll see PC owners pleading
for a version of MAX for the PC. One subscriber even canvassed a
petition to send to Opcode (as yet, to no avail

Hope this helps.

Yes, I bought M (v. 2.2.5) from the Electronic Music Foundation a couple of
weeks ago - $30. It runs fine on my Mac with System 7.1 (no video cards). There
are supposed to be bugs with 7.5.x, and EMF doesn't plan on any updates or
fixes, and can provide only *limited* technical support.
I spoke with Laurie Spiegel at the same time and she said she's working on a
Music Mouse update (I have the latest, v. 2.05), but she doesn't know when or if
it will ever be done.

was I?

Opcode's MAX. You've already said you have a Mac. Your IIsi should
be able to handle it. MAX has a graphical environment which allows you
to string together various objects (functions).
There's a mailing list for MAX....
There are archives of patches and objects at U.Iowa, IRCAM and UCSD,
downloadable via ftp. In short, very cool.
Hope this helps.

Would you be kind enough to post those FTP addresses for me.
