Hello everybody,

I'm working as an editor for a German music(ian's) magazine, the SOLO. The
SOLO is an allround-mag, covering all instruments from guitar to brass - and
keyboards of course (try our homepage:
http://www.musik-produktiv.de/SOLO.html). Currently I'm preparing an article
on Clavia's North Lead, in which North Lead users will be given the
opportunity to have their opinion about this piece of high-tech gear
published. What we are interested in is: Did the North Lead fullfill your
expectations in terms of your musical approach, where do you see its weak
points, in which way did it dissapoint you, why do you like it so much,
would you go and buy one again etc.

If you own a North Lead and would like to participate in our little survey,
I'd be very happy to receive your answers via private e-mail.

Thanks you very much for your cooperation,

Kai

Hello. I was pointed to this list by a posting to Analogue Heaven.

I've been an enthusiast for years, but only recently have I actually been
able to get to play much or do any recording. Right now I'm working on
various recording projects with some friends of mine and trying to work out
whether we're actually able to do anything live... 8)

I'm in the Worcester, Massachusetts area, and I've played out around
Worcester and Boston, although not for a year or two. We have an upcoming
performance at WJUL, the radio station at UMass Lowell, and other possible
shows. We're also trying to get something good recorded so we can send it
out to people...

For information on who we are and what we do (and the usual gear-lists and
things), check: <http://www.gweep.net/~mute/many-small-functions.html>

Anyway, I hope I can bring at least some decent questions to this list, if
not assistance of various sorts.

I was thinking about this last week; the problem is that any CD in a store
can only really be physically filed in one place at once; what's needed is
some decent kind of cross-referencing so I *know* where to find Sheila
Chandra CD's without searching three floors of HMV looking under Pop, Rock,
World (with several geographical sub-sections), Folk and so on.

Back when stores had security barriers on each floor, I used to
inconvenience store sales staff because I'd want to (i) buy two or three
CD's at once on one credit card slip and (ii) they'd all come from
completely different sections of the store, with different accounts and
tills.

It's getting better now. Last week: Klaus Schulze (Dig It) and Arvo Part
(Litany) on the same bill. This week: The Black Dog (Music for Adverts) and
Sheila Chandra (ABoneCroneDrone - if I can find it) on the same bill. One
gets used to all those stairs. (And all those stares.)

Hello,
I recently started my own record company, and pressed my own album. I used
the tele-indies ad service in the Village Voice, and a website as the main

Hi Anthony,

Check out our site at: http://www.bluehawk.com/ovo

We have sold some product but it's still a slow process as far as selling
on the web. It's great as far as a promotional tool is concerned and I believe
it will find a much bigger market in the years to come.

I'd like to comment on this myself, as I'm sure Metlay would as well, but since
we're the listowners, it might appear a bit fishy. We had a go-round about
this two years ago, and haven't said anythign since.

This, I think, nicely straddles the line between advertising and information.
I'm personally inclined to encourage letting each other know that we have
albums out. Just not all the time. Experiences on using the Web for
promotion are probably valid, as are recording sagas.

Has it been THAT long? :) BTW, I smell no fish here. I think you
might still be a little sensitive on this topic due to that old thread.

Joe, from where I sit, I viewed this as being a little further from that
line (on the legal side) than you do. I didn't see it as self
promotion, just as a thread starter on how to promote on the web. I,
for one would welcome such a thread, as it pertains to electronic music.
I'd also like to see more recording sagas, too. If anybody from Analogue
Heaven is here and if you were a participant on the EMP (Electronic Music
Project) CD, I encourage you to post your experiences. Nice CD, BTW.

And now that I think about it, I hope my post on the Robert Rich events
wasn't over the line. If it was, please advise, and accept my
apologies.

Hi there !

I'm looking forward to buying a KURZWEIL K2500 XS, Alesis Monitor One
speakers and a DAT player.
Could anybody advise me on how what would be the most suitable amplifier,
the most suitable digital 8-track and the most suitable mixer to buy in
order to make all that work at its best, knowing that I would like to hook
up a guitar as well and my old Roland D-20 plus keep a few tracks free in
case I need to hook up something else as well.
BTW, how about the Alesis Quadraverb with all that ?

Thanks a bunch for helping me out, I don't understand much about all those
technicalities.

Take care,

Topher.

Amplifier: There are many choices here, the most obvious would be the
Alesis RA100. But whatever you choose make sure it doesn't have a fan
(noisy). You shouldn't need more than 100 watts per side into the Monitor
One's 4 ohms. The monitors are built to take 120 watts but you really
don't want to push them that far. I've also heard good things about the
Stewart power amps. Rememter what I said about the fan though, FAN = NOISE.

Digital 8-track: Of the tape kind, the DA-88 is best (also more
expensive). As for hard-disk based, if you have a Macintosh you may want
to check out the Digidesign family of hard disk recording (from the
Audiomedia III card to Pro Tools III). Audiomedia III and MOTU's Digital
Performer is a good entry level system if you have a Power Mac. But it
really depends on your system. Don't let anybody sell you anything that
your computer system can't handle. If you don't want to tie up your
computer, I would suggest one of the stand alone hard disk recording
systems such as the Akai DR8 (upgradable to 16 tracks) and the Roland
DM-800.

Mixer: Get a Mackie. If you don't you will be sorry. The 1202 or the
1402 is probably all you need. If you need more busses check out the
"industry standard" 1604.

Hope these suggestions have been helpful.

Also I took a course in Electronic Music at Brevard College, NC, that
covered the basics. Maybe I can contribute something to the list.

Does anyone have any ideas??? My keyboard receives MIDI just fine, but
will
not send. I hired the only person in my town who understands MIDI. He
tried everything--reinstalled windows 95, reinstalled the software,
checked
the drivers, even installed a MIDI interface. We are both baffled. My
keyboard is a Yamaha PSR-320, my computer is a Packard bell Pentium with
plenty of RAM, etc.
It used to work with my old keyboard, but then 3 things happened almost
simultaneosly: New keyboard, more RAM, (installed by my teenage
son-maybe
thats the problem!!) and we also got rid of a virus using the Norton
program.

Any ideas?

Are we sure the PSR-320 actually sends MIDI (or is supposed to?). If
you have another MIDI device, plug the MIDI out from the PSR-320
directly into the MIDI in on the second device (get the computer out
of the loop temorarily). That'll tell you if it's actually putting
out MIDI or not. Whether it's supposed to or not, whether there are
MIDI enable/disable switches somewhere within it, etc. are issues
for the PSR-320 owners' manual.

Good luck.
