NO NO NO NO. *Please* read the FAQ.

As an official representative, i.e., one of the listowners, I'll restate
the policy:

NO ads on EMUSIC-L. Ads OK on SYNTH-L.

To be more specific, ads by list members selling used items to other list
members are okay on SYNTH-L only; ads from retailers or other for-profit
folks are forbidden on both lists.

People, we don't have Martin slave over editing the FAQs and sending them
out once a month just because we like to hear ourselves talk. We keep the
signal-to-noise ratio on these two lists very high because we put a lot
of thought and effort into policy and procedure. That should all be
transparent to y'all in day-to-day use, but only if you took the five
or ten minutes to read the FAQ beforehand and made sure you understood it.

Read the damn FAQ. If there's something in it you don't understand, ASK.
Legitimate questions don't bother us. But if you stubbornly insist on
posting here without being familiar with the ground rules, you'd better
at least hope that Joe (or a conscientious fellow list member like David)
gets to you before I do.

No one likes to be accused of pimping, Bill. We have no choice but to be
careful on the lists we administer when talking about our own output.

I haven't heard it but am rather curious to. I've gotten largely
disconnected from the group-CD efforts going on here and there; I have
such little time for music these days that it usually gets aimed at my
own releases. I love to hear about the successes of others in the field;
it gives me encouragement for my own efforts.

I don't see that at all. Live emusic events are rare enough that it's
nice to get the word out about them.

I remember vague discussions on the list back when I was
rmillard@utcvm.utc.net about topics such as the sales of personal
musical creations on the list. I have many of those old messages
arcived somewhere. I seem to recall that many of the conversations were
unfriendly to say the least. I got tipped off to Synth-L in an even
earlier vollie of messages on the topic. If it isn't a good idea to do
self promotions of matterial then is there somewhere else that it is?
Is it possible that a sight could be built to allow members of this list
to show there wears, I mean their stuff? I understand your reluctance
and I recall a number of extreemist comments that looked more like
political issues than musical ones. I don't know whether it's a good
idea or not but Mike helped me recover from my first flaming a long
number of years ago. I know who side I'm on. By the way do any of the
list members still get together and Jam? I am certain that used to
happen once a year or so.

Well, let's address these separately.

1) "No ads on EMUSIC-L" has a historical basis. When the list was originally
hosted on BITNET, it was _illegal_ for the list to be used for commercial
purposes, whether personal or retailer. The list traffic was and is dense
enough that we decided to retain this policy when the list moved to
   Internet-based hosts.

2) "Ads OK on SYNTH-L" is based on the fact that it originally was a gateway
to the rec.music.makers.synth (now defunct) newsgroup. We had no control
over content, and since it was not hosted via BITNET, this wasn't a
problem. We left it as it was when it was disconnected from the newsgroup,
as it allowed us to separate the gear lovers from the theory lovers.

3) "No retailers" is a stricture added to keep Joe Random Salesperson from
dropping in ads without contributing materially to the list. We've never
had trouble with retailers subscribing, or privately following up mail
they've seen on the list, e.g., "You said you were looking for a used
EWI 1000? We have one for $500 at our store in East Weewaw, Wisconsin."
We've judged that "this week's hot items" from 15 different retailers
adds too much to the signal-to-noise ratio.

As Mike and I invest our time to keep things running smoothly as possible,
we are not taking votes on whether or not these are good rules. They are
the rules.

Shucks. :)

Actually I think the middle ground we settled on was that talking about
our own releases was okay, as long as there was an effort made to educate
SYNTH-L about how they were done. Flat out ads are discouraged, but
teaching people while talking about what was done is very cool indeed.

>By the way do any of the
>list members still get together and Jam? I am certain that used to
>happen once a year or so.

I don't know about that; the only regular get-togethers that I know of
that are more than virtual are the bi-yearly Team Metlay sessions. There
was talk of other groups getting together, but I don't know what came of
them; I certainly don't think they resulted in releases of music.

This is a hoax... A virus can't affect a Modem.. to my knowledge.. It
can maybe rerout interrupts to the serial port while the virus is
running... But as far as damaging external hardware, thats not quite
     possible...
And as far as detection... theres plenty of ways.. Pick up a copy of
Thunderbyte... It's free... along with F-Prot....(Free also)... the
two best virus protection in the world...

     check out these sites...

At my last job I was head of an Anti-Virus project. Because of this I
had to do a lot of reaserch on the subject. And here are some facts.

There are two types of Viruses: Boot Sector Viruses and File Viruses.

You can only catch a Boot Virus from Booting from an Infected floppy
or running a program infected with Boot Sector Loader.

You can oly catch a File Virus by First Downloading the Infected
file(if your getting it from the internet). And Running the infected
file. If you don't run it. you will never get infected.

The only non executable file virus are Macro Viruses... although they
are somewhat dangerous.. they are rare and very easy to prevent.

     ....

I have Detected, Disinfected, Isolated 5 viruses at my Company before
they had caused any damages. If you have an anti-virus plan, and some
basic common practices, you can easily prevent viruses.

Subject: Exact Extract Loop Program?

I've found myself using an old analog synthesizer/sequencer that has not
been converted to midi. I've been recording to my drive, and using a
formula (sample rate x 60 divided by samples per beat) to find the
recording tempo/BPM of the loop. Then I use Cubase Audio to import the
file and set the tempo of Cubase to match the BPM of my file. To do
this I use Sound Designer's (SD) waveform editor to find the number of
samples between quarter notes. The hard part is scrolling through the
waveform to make it a new region. SD when zoomed to the highest level
will let me select an area, but I can't go from zoomed to not-zoomed,
and back to zoomed again without losing my start point. I need the
detailed selection of the exact starting/ending points of the quarter
notes used to determine BPM, or my recorded sound file and midi parts
with drift away from each other during playback. When zoomed SD can
take around 3 to 5 minutes for 1 bar to scroll even with a fast
computer. A program that will let the user select the exact sample
number to begin the cut and end the cut would be great. This would
provided a perfect cut, and it would use the same numbers for working
out the BPM. Does anyone know of a software program that can do this,
or maybe a better way?

Subject: Stockhausen Kontakte. Cubase question.

Does any of you listmembers ever came across or analyzed the score for
Stockhausen's Kontakte? I have the desire to buy the score, in the
context of assisting me in understanding and better analysing the piece.
But I would like to know what is its style of notation. Is it
graphical? Is it a mixture of ordinary notation with graphics for the
electronics? I.e. how exact is it?
Does is have any freely orderable sections (much like one of his
Klavierstucke)?

Now for another matter: I'm sorry for posting this question here, I am
aware that the proper place to post such subjects is in the SYNTH-L
list. Since I am not a member of that list, nor wish to become one--it
would be a one-off question membership--I post the question here, which
is the most relevant and most capable place to give me an useful answer.

Does any of you listmembers use Cubase Audio/Cubase Score for
PC/Windows? I am having a bit of trouble in installing the software and
I lack the documentation referring to the manual installation method
with the EXTRACT program supplied. Can any of you assist me? I'd be
grateful if you can give me this particular piece of information. You
can answer me privately to the e-mail in my signature, to avoid
cluttering this list.

Thank you very much.

Kontakte is a score with both traditional notation for the performers and
a graphical "descriptive" score of the actual tape part.

The complete score can be purchased through Stockhausen's company in
Germany. If you write to the following address, you will be placed on
his mailing list and will receive catalogs with complete listings of CDs
and scores. Here is the address:

Stockhausen-Verlag
5067 Kurten
West Germany

good luck!
