FIRs are phase-linear... that's why they're used alot, despite the frequency artifacts that can result from awkward truncation of the impulse response record... they don't impose weird frequency-dependent phase shifts, which are generally considered undesirable to begin with, and can do odd things in a system so dependent on synchronisation. ps... i find this topic entirely appropriate to the purview of this group. anyone here ever try programming formants? -------====< Entropy Eventually Wins >====--------- Eric Harnden (Ronin) (202)885-2746 ... harnden@physics.american.edu ---===< And I Like To Be On The Winning Side >===--- ========================================================================= Date: Sun, 22 Dec 1996 20:38:29 -0400 Reply-To: Electronic Music Discussion List Sender: Electronic Music Discussion List Comments: RFC822 error: CC field duplicated. In case you didn't know, Mike has been Assistent Editor at Recording Magazine for some--what?--eight months now? (A hardy and belated congratulations, by the way!) In case you also didn't know, Recording magazine is the BEST magazine for beginners and pros alike, whether you work in a home studio or take it to the bigtime and hire one. Clear, understandable articles, great atmosphere, and no excess. (IMHO!) So, Mike is in truly great company. I only wrote this because he'll be busy and won't get a chance to read it (well, MY ego is problematic at times...) But, FYI and all that.. I'm trying to make some music, ok? It is heard in mostly Euro hiNRG house tracks. There are many variations of the same sound...Let me name some songs that I know for sure it is in: Bananarama - "Every shade of blue" (album version) -not the kick at the beginning but a few bars into the song Undercover - "Every Breath you take" (300% pure energy compilation) God's Groove - "Back to Nature" (logic eurodance comp- Vol 1) New Order - "Blue Monday '95" (single version-Brain Mix) It sounds like it is a kick with a resonance filter giving it a "blip" type sound. Sometimes I hear it modified with a filter in kick drum fills too. It has been years and still nobody has been able to tell me where it comes from...let's see if any of you know. thanks for your help!!
