The European Union commissioners have announced that agreement
has been reached to adopt ENGLISH as the preferred language for
European communications, rather than GERMAN, which was the other
possibility.

As part of the negotiations, the British government conceded that
English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a
five-year phased plan for what will be known as EuroEnglish (Euro for
short).

In the first year, "s" will be used instead of the soft "c".
Sertainly, sivil servants will resieve this news with joy. Also, the hard
"c" will be replaced with "k". Not only will this klear up konfusion, but
typewriters kan have one less letter.

There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year, when
the troublesome "ph" will be replaced by "f". This will make words
like "fotograf" 20 per sent shorter.

In the third year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be
expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible.
Governments will enkorage the removal of double letters, which
have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that
the horible mes of silent "e"s in the languag is disgrasful, and they
would go.

By the fourth year, peopl wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing

I think this is the very best soft synth I have found on the net, and
it's free! Runs on win95.

ftp://ftp.uni-paderborn.de/ftp/disk5/pc-demos/music/programs
          /samplers/trx-or11.zip

10 oscillators, loads 2 samples, 4 filters, 3 envelopes, delay and
reverb, saves wav or FT2 instrument.

I'd be interested to hear what the difference between this and a
non-destructive editor is.

Yours Nick

...where do i have to start this sad story...and i am not sure if
this subject will work for you guys... well we will see.. i am
taking cinematography sort of class, and the first project is roughly
4 -- 5mins short films. the script that i received was some sort of
pulp fiction type, filled with whole bunch of scenes from different
point of view, so the atmosphere changed really dinamically, i dunno
why my professor chose me for that complicated one, but anyway, i
thought only way that i can express it effecively was using
soundtrack. so i started with soft Agnus Dei, and then Mea Culpa -->
the burning time of testament 1997 --> return to agnus dei. he liked
my idea and also the way to combine smoothely, but he could not stand
the highest explosive sound( of course it was testament) in the
climax. i did not interfere the narration, or anything, to mix it
well i spent countless hours for just that specific part which lasts
only 0.5 seconds, and all my classmates told me that it definitely
worked, but my authoritative professor just could not accept any kind
of explosive sounz, and not surprisingly, turn the volume of the part
aaaaaaaallllllllllllllll the way down. now my soundtrack is dead. i
just cannot agree with him. i just cannot. he just don't understand
this explosive sensation. how can he be so sure that i was wrong?
where is the answer? i just do not get it. classic is beautiful, soft
jazz are cool too, but why we cannot scream out loud? i understand
that soundtrack has to be the soundtrack, but why soundtrack cannot
lead the whole story? why the soundtrack always stay all the way back
and shut the hell up? i thought as long as it does not interfere the
narration, it can speak out loud and also can lead the whole story
and its atmosphere. I got lost definietly. why we must not break the
formular that already exist?
really sucking thing is, even though his suckin attitude, i still
like my obdurate professor and also the SGI computer for this class.
that machine is just a loving miracle.

Yeoun,

As a film student, grades should be the last thing on your mind. If
you have good ideas, they will be recognised. If not by your professor,
then by others.

I find it hard to believe that a teacher would tell you what you can
and can't do on creative (rather than technical) grounds. Doesn't
happen at the film school I attend (and I'd ignore them if they tried).

What format are you mixing to? If it's 16mm, the dynamic range is
so small that your explosion won't sound much louder than anything
else, anyway.

Yeah, and architecture is frozen music. Sounds good - doesn't really
mean anything. Film can incorporate music; they are both temporal
media. Beyond that, the bow is stretching pretty far. I've made
experimental pieces manipulating visual parameters such as colour
'synaesthetically' with aural parameters such as harmonic content, fwiw...

I believe that sound is as important to film as image, but the
culture of the industry suggests otherwise. However there are examples
of film-makers who value sound e.g. David Lynch (who does his own
sound design).

Keep in mind the old saying about 'those who can, do; those who can't,
teach'. Works for me when I'm annoyed with a teacher.

At the risk of being spammed, I still love the old Prog Rock bands. I hope
maybe that I'm just not looking hard enough, but I can't seem to find
anything current that matches the excellent musicianship of Yes and ELP and
old Genesis and Peter Gabriel, and King Crimson. The closest that I have
found of late is Dream Theatre, but they don't have the effect on me that the
older bands have. Consequently, I still pull out my old Discs when I really
want to hear a group of musicians play their balls off playing songs of which
I am not musically able to play.

If you attend a performance of Koyaanisqatsi or Powaaqatsi (by Philip
Glass) you'll see a rendition of your ideas. The films, on both cases,
assist the music.

I don't think you'll find any files on the other bands. I think
Psychophysicists is a one-off project, by A. Newton (from Clock DVA) and
A. McKenzie of Hafler Trio.

"Hermeneutic Music" by Propeller Island was released on Erdenklang, I
think they have an additional release. Either way, P.I. is no more.
Founder member Lars Stroschen embarked on another project, Tonart, with
at least two releases, Eins and Zwei, with Conrad Schnitzler and Jorg
Thomasius.

"Psychophysicists" sounds like pure computer music with bits of ambient,
while "Hermeneutic Music" is more like dense musique concrete with a bit
of ambient, and passages with heavily processed voices. This CD is
brilliantly recorded and produced, hearing it in a highend system is a
great experience.

I can provide you with mp3 excerpts of these CDs if you wish.

Best regards.

though? when i transfer to mainland next year, i would have a chance
to watch the real performance. =) for now, i have to appreciate
just for the chance that i could meet the SGI computer. i thought
philip is composer for the films soundtrack, but he even makes the
films actually? cool... =)

I don't think Glass is a soundtrack composer :-) ... Besides, he is not
the film's director. The director is Godfrey Reggio. Both films are to
be seen at the auditorium, with the Glass Ensemble performing in that
lowered section of the stage. At least, the concert I attended was that
way: A musical performance with accompanying film. Both films are very
insteresting, mostly highspeed or extreme slowmotion throughout.

Best regards.

This is true, and they're good examples of something that ought to be done
more often, but isn't. I think "visible music" is an apt term for this. I
saw Philip Glass and his ensemble do his film-opera "Belle et la Bete" a
couple years ago and thought it a remarkable experience. He took the old
Cocteau Beauty and the Beast movie and wrote his own score, including
singers to sing the dialogue in the movie. So he and his ensemble are
playing the music while the movie is being shown, and their timing is so
incredible that the sung lines are exactly in sync with the lip motions of
the people on screen (Glass claims they're not really in sync, but it was
too close for me to notice). He does this without any kind of click track or
other synchronization device. The band just plays the music as written and
it all comes out right. Incredible.

And the music really goes well with the story, acting, as all good dramatic
music does, as a powerful agent for the suspension of disbelief. I took the
trouble to rent a video of the original movie, with a score by Georges
Auric. I like Glass' music better. (An interesting aside: Glass had to pay
the estate of Auric just to get permission to suppress the original
soundtrack).

I think YEOUN THE BAAAAD's teacher was just trying to prepare him for the
"real world" where nobody really listens to music, and directors regard
music as some kind of subliminal thing that influences people's emotional
reaction to the movie. According to this viewpoint, the music's job is just
to do its job and stay out of the way. There's certainly some merit in this
viewpoint, and it might be useful for Yeoun to grit his teeth and learn how
operate under that constraint.

Eventually he might also meet up with a director who's interested in
collaborating in the "visible music" type of movie he envisions.

Lots of luck!!

I've even seen it a Blockbuster (admitted, all screwed up because no
one was renting it, but still a fabulous experience - they had Eno's
"Thursday Afternoon" as well, in with the music videos...)

It's what I've been saying for years about literal images versus
imagery. Imagery works in multiple directions between any combinations
of media. Of course, this implies a breaking down of barriers between
media, and that is always a threat to the small-minded and
unimaginative. It sounds as if your professor has this problem.

I think that images show you what to think about, and the soundtrack tells
you what to think about it.

I don't quite get the professor's problem. As a professional who's worked
in video and multimedia for 20 years, I go through a step of adding sound
effects to audio tracks for punctuation, if not just for realism. If I
want an explosion I'll add it. Is the problem that he's saying that you
shouldn't implement it in music, but should leave that to effects? That
would be a creative choice, and in my opinion he should just make sure that
you're aware of the choice. Which you obviously are.

The history of filmmaking is too wide for unbreakable rules. It IS useful,
however, to know the current cliche's and styles, if only to play against
them.

Someone asked more info (and mp3 files) on the bands I referred on a
very recent post--sorry, I can't remember who it was.

Much to my extreme delight (I really REALLY love Propeller Island's
"Hermeneutic Music," both musically and conceptually), I just found out
that he (Lars Stroschen) has web-presence, with online listing of works.
Unfortunately, I found no samples of the music there.

It is to be found on

That's precisely the copy I have, I always found strange that whomever
copied it for me taped Thursday Afternoon along. It may be worthwhile
to note that the CD release of Koyaanisqatsi (on Island Records) is
incomplete when compared to the concert work. The CD has only six
pieces, while the concert has twelve. I believe (can't quite remember
at the moment) the video version has the complete work.

Best regards.

it is sad to tell you this, but actually he could not even bare that
0.5 sec. as soon as the volume arose, before even it gets done, he
just said it's too loud. and did not even check it again, and did not
even tell me to consider it again, he just adjust that particular
part by his own hand. turn the point all the way down. he did not
even have conscious to think about the sound effects at the time. he
just could not bare that hard *noise*. he's pretty notorious as a
dogmatic but still it was too big concussion for me.

That'd be great...I'm from Ontario Canada, two hours away from Toronto.
Most of what I get that closely resembles Electronic would be more of the
commercialized bands, like prodigy and chemical bros. So I would like to
hear a little bit of the underground.

An idea. Keep it moderate and then HARD CUT to to a short dead silence.
Properly placed, it's more chilling than an explosion.

Last night Bravo (the cable channel) showed an hour-long documentary on
Toru Takamitsu, the Japanese composer who created many soundtracks
(including that for "Woman of the Dunes") the documentary focused on his
soundtrack work.

He had a nice quote, when he was talking about soundtracks (and possibly
other music as well) "...even a single sound can be music." While this
isn't news to this emusic list, it did come at a relevant time, so I
thought I'd pass it on.

From your last note, it sounded like your professor objected to the
difference in volume between the explosion and the rest of the audio, and
not the use of the explosion per se. On the surface, it seems like the
explosion surprised and irritated him--possibly your goal. Of course, he
could have been anticipating view meters in the red, and making a technical
correction, not an aesthetic one.
If it WAS technical, obviously you should find out how to know in advance
how to determine the maximum level.

Good luck.

Well...that may be a bit too general.
In art school, there were students who were fine with weekly "hangings"
when their work would be judged, and others who were afraid to show their
work. Usually those with the more experimental work were happy to get some
feedback.

You don't have to be very old to be afraid of either success or failure.
Kids in first or second grade sometimes have serious problems with that
already. They don't have to wait to "grow up."

I think that some people learn to love to have the medium talk to them, and
others never do.
If they get into having the medium talk to them, they'll forget any fears
about success or failure.

I do believe that people ask different kinds of questions as they age. But
I don't think that reducing that to fear is accurate--certainly not as a
general case.

Perhaps it is more a question of a growing sense of responsibility as
one gets old. Not because of getting old, but because of the
accumulated experience and knowledge. Ah, yes, I meant responsibility
towards oneself.

All the best.

Hi Jeff,

I must say that none of the bands I mentioned resemble even remotely
what is generally called "underground." The material tends more to the
avant-garde genre of music/emusic, i.e. the electronic music of the 50s,
but obviously under a new perspective.

I will then send you over a few days (if you don't mind) a few excerpts
of the music. It is Propeller Island and Psychophysicists. Do you want
Download too? And the composers I mentioned (Xenakis, Harvey, Nono)?

What size of file do you prefer? Do you have any restrictions in size
for your mailbox? I ask you this because it is usually necessary to
send files between 1 MB and 2 MB, i.e. 1 min to 2 min of music, for them
to make any sense.

All the best.

Note that in the second half of this line, ! becomes 1 for "i". Clearly,
there is no consistent application or rationale in antiorp's textual
practice.

Most of this arrogant and self-indulgent obfuscation is not germane to the
list anyway. (Or, if it is, no one can tell!) (This is a separate issue
from the presumed talent, to which I have referred previously.)
