In response to the merger of AOLTimeWarner, a group of radio broadcasters are producing a short program to be aired simultaneously over a number of radio stations in the Sydney area at midnight on the night of Wednesday Feb 9. This political action will be accompanied by satellite and net broadcasts (http://laudanum.net/fl*live) and a cd for re-broadcast at will. Participants include: zina kaye/ hydrogen jukebox / 2res shannon o'neill / furthermore / 2mbs scott horscroft / radio alice / 2ser the more the better,,,, The project is a conceptual response. It goes beyond an analysis of the next year, into the realm of how people - on a very basic level - receive information. When the AOLTimeWarner merger was announced, the response by most in the arts community was of nausea. Another step towards the homogenisation and restriction of culture. and if { imagine that the internet becomes like tv. imagine that people have even less time to find independent content. } or { why are corporations richer than countries? why do they pay so little tax? why are they so powerful? } Meanwhile many minds said "hey i can do that too, locally even". The dialectic continues (for now). [q.v. Etoys, Leonardo, Amazon, Real Networks, Doubleclick, Seattle, etc.] When we say that this is a political project, we are not calling for people to storm the barricades. While clearly politically motivated, this is a creative project and as such people are free to make of the broadcast what they will. The simultaneity of the broadcast is in contrast to the diversity of its participants. We've received many offers of support from around the world (apparently we've tapped into a current of feeling) and they all have different, albeit compatible perspectives. At this stage, the broadcast is coming together as a seamless collage of relevant samples, loops and curiosities from around the wonderful world of sound, including an extensive cut-up of the AOLTimeWarner press conference. The total sum is a fake-love-affair-documentary about the merger. To the pessimists saying 'yes the world is fucked but this won't change anything' well, why make anything at all? Just because the project won't directly lead to the end of global oligopolies is no reason not to pursue it. Creativity resonates. Why should Australians care about AOLTimeWarner? Look at the relationship between commerce and content. When you look at relatively independent, even state run media broadcasters, you have to see the relationship between them and AOLTimeWarner (TWAT). If TWAT changes its delivery system, then e.g. the ABC feels that to retain audience it has to act accordingly. That change may in itself be healthy, or it may be sycophantic. The thing about AOLTimeWarner is that it represents a large producer of content, with a massive archive from which to deliver endless stuff. In the UK, digital TV is in full swing, and you can buy at any one time, up to a hundred movies to watch. But can you imagine that an independent film distribution centre will have such an opportunity? Look how international filmmakers are marginalised because the US system is so predominant. Australia is already SATURATED with US culture, and people do complain about it. What if Telstra gets into a content deal with AOLTimeWarner? Then we'll have Boxtel and AOL cable - would you like fries with that? It's hard to infer that we are not amazing individuals, but after a while brainwashing can occur in even the strongest human. - these are some of our thoughts, but really we hope that the program is a good, stimulating (perhaps even fun!) listen. So if you would like to support us by sending your sound works, or samples, or suggestions; or if you are involved in radio and would like to participate - please contact laudible@laudanum.net ?subject=timewarneraol We have already received lots of diverse feedback, which we intend to document in the form of a web page. zina kaye (http://laudanum.net) shannon o'neill (http://www.cia.com.au/alias) http://laudanum.net/fl*live/timewarneraolcomment.htm http://laudanum.net/laudible/
