While I was looking into the subject, I came across a reference (it may have come from this list, but I can't remember) to a recently published book, "Sonic Graphics, Seeing Sound," by Matt Woolman. I received it in the mail today, and it is a beautiful book. I had expected something more technical, more like a text book, but this definitely falls into the "art book" category. If you are looking for "recipes" or a "how-to" book on how to combine music and graphics -- using Flash animation or computer algorithms -- which was my motivation for ordering -- this isn't it. But it certainly is an inspiration to carry on with the work. It wasn't at all what I expected, but I am delighted with what I received. I recommend it for anyone interested in exploring the ideas involved in combining music and graphics. It looks interesting. Someone on the list, maybe it was you, mentioned the Jarre CD before. I will look into picking it up. Check it out! Review Follows: Boogie Pie The Intro to Boogie Pie Boogie Pie Music and Mp3.com http://www.mp3.com/boogie_pie Boogie Pie...the name says it all. The Intro to Boogie Pie is a mixed bag of dope beats, chillin' dancy grooves and Vocoder madness. The artists or band behind this project, and I'm not sure which it is at this point, is one creative force that truly takes the best of bands such as Air and Daft Punk and runs with it. In fact anybody that finds themselves yearning for something along the lines of Air's Moon Safari, or a less-popular, less radio saturated project along the lines of Daft Punk will thoroughly enjoy Boogie Pie. Actually it's Air and Daft Punk that really come to mind with this fantastic recording. The Vocoder, to me is one of the most fantastic inventions of the last fifty years and it seems as though it's just not used enough, but Boogie Pie makes great use of this wonderful machine, and it's Air and Daft Punk, and possibly Kraftwerk that really got me turned onto the possibilitiess of the Vocoder. This is also a very chill, groove laden downtempo recording. There's a bit of a downtempo disco feel in some of the songs, while others seem as though Boogie Pie was sampling and looping some of Electric Jazz's best and most noteable records. Whatever they are doing is wonderful! "Midnight Drive" is one of the tracks that really sticks out to me. It's a very minimalist driving track. To me it's very reminiscent of Electric Jazz-Woman-Bobby Humphries Harlem River Drive track, which is equally fantasic. "Move It" on the other hand is kind of like some kind of weird electronic mystery-brew with it's Harpsichord, panned synth sounds, Vocoder, and dreamy, but driving (truly a weird combo) beat. Then there's "Twilight" a very cool, very chill track with female vocalist Zoey Ardennes, further evidence that this is a band, and not a one-man computer experiment. I wish that I could say a little more about the line-up, but there's little or no information on this ensemble or the artist's behind it. This is quite possibly one of the best downtempo recordings that I've heard in the last 12 months, and I'm certain that it's one of the best D.A.M. CD's that Mp3.com's Downtempo category has to offer. For a mere eight bucks The Intro to Boogie Pie is a bonafide steal. Get yourself a copy now at http://www.mp3.com/boogie_pie and Enjoy!
