I wasn’t able to catch the concert live, but my laptop recorded it for me with Audio Hijack Pro – quite good for this kind of thing, by the way.

Listening later, this was quite an interesting DS. The choice to go for more long-form pieces led to stuff that was considerably more complex; you just need more ideas for longer pieces, which makes them much more interesting. There was also more room for soloists to stretch out and develop their ideas.

The inclusion of 3(!) P3 sequencers led to the jams dropping into a groove much more quickly than in previous years – this meant that both there was less noisescaping and that there were improvs that actually had an arc of development, making them much more satisfying.

Highlights: Tim Walters did some serious rocking out on the recorder. All of the guitarists were stellar. Way more percussion and percussion-driven pieces this year.

THe attendees are working hard to get a CD/DVD (not sure which yet – depends on how much music ends up at what the piece leader decides is releasable).

I decided not to go this year; I’m hoping to take a real vacation for the first time in a long time soon, and taking an extra week of vacation is what I need to do this time around. I’m sure I’ll be returning, probably next year.

Worse, Allen’s rig crashed too. I filled with a little ambient percussion, hoping he could get straightened out, but no luck. Still, even on the pieces I was out of due to tech problems, it still sounded great.I was fortunately problem-free for Bill’s piece, and I rocked my MiniMoog solo tonight. Very happy. Drumming was at a way higher standard than the rest of the weekm even happier about that.A great experience, and one I’ll probably write more about later. Especially I need to look at the technucal issues and see how to resolve them, I’m going to play more live gigs.

I’ll be attending the Different Skies festival this year as a performer. This will be my first public performance on keyboards. Gulp.

I’m still doing my last minute planning – I’ve finalized the gear, gotten the software I want to use ready, and have made lists of the stuff to actually be packed and taken. I haven’t actually done any packing yet, but at least I know what I’m taking.

Gearwise, I’ll be exhibiting my simultaneous impulses to Luddism and bleeding-edge: the SD-1 and Vortex on the Luddite side – pretty much unchanged since 1993; and the Presonus Firebox, wildly-assorted AU and VST plugins, host programs, and software I haven’t even quite finished writing yet on the neophile side.

Haven’t yet decided whether to try getting the didjeridoo and dumbek in somehow or not; possibly the dumbek, and I might see if the didj will fit in the keyboard’s SKB case since it will be being handled by fellow musicians instead of airport baggage handlers.

Oh yeah, clothes, shoes, etc. Sure. I am going to pick up most of my personal stuff at the far end rather than dork with plastic bags and 1-oz bottle stupidity.

More updates as we get closer to the day.

Those of you who’ve read my postings on EMUSIC-L and have followed this blog have probably noted that I’m a big fan of generative art: ambient music, installation pieces, and so on.

wmode=”transparent” width=”425″ height=”350″>

Brian Eno has just released 77 Million Paintings; a DVD of generative art accompanied by music. You can see an excerpt at this link (requires Flash; the full-size piece is Flash as well). The music for the demo is “Ikebukuro” from The Shutov Assembly.

The version on the website is a limited subset, of course, but it’s an effective sample. The images combine very organic textural bits with more hard-edged graphics in a nicely-judged way. I also find the rate at which the piece changes to be just right: interesting enough to look at for a while if you like, but not so quick that it constantly engages the reptilian brain’s “what was that?” reflex. More details on the piece and how it was done are available at the Apple website. A lot of the work was apparently done on the Mac.

The piece is available at amazon.com. Update: The three-day North American premiere is on at the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco. I’ve missed two of the three days; I may try to hit tomorrow’s Long Now Foundation member’s day.

I recorded the Different Skies 2006 concert last Saturday night. Live from Arcosanti, Different Skies is the brainchild of EMUSIC-L’s former co-moderator, Mike Metlay. [Update: a much better moderate-quality recording is available at the 2006 concert page.]

An outgrowth of Metlay’s Team Metlay efforts, Different Skies gets together an international group of musicians each year; in the space of one week, they go from an empty stage to a complete concert. Having been part of one good (Ballistic) and one not-so-good (Beta Test/Saturnalia) Team session, I’m well aware of how easy it is to not succeed in such a venture.

Previous concerts have been good, solid efforts; the 2006 concert was jaw-droppingly amazing. For a concert which was, in considerable part, improvised, I didn’t find any moments in the entire concert in which the players seemed to be looking for something to say; the improvisation was fluid and well-directed all the way through. Jim Combs’ “card trick” part way through, in which he had the audience draw cards to determine what notes the musicians could play, was quite a lot of fun, and came across well even on just a recording. I’m sure it was a blast live.

I’ve listened to the whole thing several times and continue to enjoy it. I hope that Metlay decides to release it all. Interestingly enough, three of the core members of the Team were present this year: Mike, Nick Rothwell, and John Rossi III (John 3); they played one of the tunes from the first Team Metlay CD, which was a really nice touch.

As an aside, Mike held a “raffle”, giving away copies of music by the artists – this was in the stream, but not the recording that’s on the website. I haven’t yet heard if this increased the interest at the merchandise table, but I wouldn’t be surprised. It seemed like a great idea.

Want to see what the stage looked like, and what everyone was playing? Check out the gear video. I like Mike’s tiny little mixer; I could use one of those to isolate the Vortex from the rest of my rig when using it in feedback mode.

Even better: there’s a nice film (QuickTime format) of the working process for one of the pieces. [Update: now links to the differentskies.org version of this video.]

A great evening at The Lab in San Francisco this weekend. I met Tim Walters and his wife Josie (who is an accomplished sculptor) for dinner, and then Tim and I went over to the Lab. To my surprise, we also ran into Tim Thompson, the creator of KeyKit, who I find works round the corner from me here in Sunnyvale. (Looking at Tim T.’s website, it’s no longer a surprise; he’s working with Herb Heinz’s band dud, and Herb works with Amy. Circle closed.)

There were three acts; the first I unfortunately didn’t catch the name of; the Huts (who were supposed to be on first) were unfortunately unable to appear due to a family emergency. The substitute band was okay – they did an extended set which appeared to be a lot of live loop mixing – definite moments, but no definite direction.

hey willpower was wonderfully bouncy synth-pop (one vocalist, one synthesist with backing tracks – on a Powerbook, looked like – and dancers!) which was simultaeously willing to be silly (the goofy eighties dance moves were priceless) and danceable, with flashes of brilliance. They didn’t quite get the Lab audience dancing – not quite that kind of venue, and honestly not enough room! – but they were really good; I hope to catch them at at an actual dance club sometime.

Last on was Amy X. Neuburg; I had taken a peek at her website, and I was expecting to enjoy her set, but I was unprepared for the combination of humor, sophistication, and just plain chops. She has a remarkably capable voice – everything from raspy bluesy to pure operatic soprano to wispy chanteuse to, well you name it.

In this performance, she had a cello trio which mixed wonderfully with the warmth of her voice; she integrates her use of electronics – mostly live looping of her voice via Echoplex – beautifully. She also uses a Drumkat to trigger samples, so her performance is visually interesting as well. It’s obvious that she’s having such a good time during a performance. She talks with the the audience between numbers, including reading a list of names proposed for her cello trio: “There’s Always Room for Cello” got the largest groan, but “The K-Y Celli” got the biggest laugh.

My favorite piece from the evening was probably “Life Stepped In”. A stunning combination of Laurie Andersonesque monologue, Baladamenti walking bass, and a chillingly beautiful buildup of the chorus as the song proceeds. Hysterically funny and heartbreakingly sad simultaneously.

She’s marvelously talented and deserves a much wider audience. I picked up a copy of her CD Residue at the concert (”Life Stepped In” is on it, but the whole CD is tremendous). Go. Get one. Listen to it. Tell your friends. Now.
