Normally we have a lot of different blog entries that generally end up getting written at the end of the day or even a day or so later – a lot happens at a Different Skies!

Having the one Twitter ID to watch saves everyone from having to chew up Twitter real estate on a #differentskies hashtag.

It will be interesting to see if everyone’s too busy even to use Twitter.

And yes, the gear video’s coming.

I’m currently at the airport, having just finished going through security and having to have my backpack scanned twice; too many confusing electronic bits, I guess.

Load-out took from after the concert and final jams (ten-ish) until about 3AM. We got to experience the weather we might have had: 60 mph winds and cold. Fortunately, that was the only cold night we had. We all got up as usual thsi morning; several folks had to go out early (Otso, DK, and Mike) because of bad weather predicted along their return route. Giles, Bill Fox, Darrel, Allen, and Doug went out around noon, and Jim Combs and I followed soon after. I was lucky that Jim was with me, as there was construction that required us to get off the freeway and drive through random parts of Phoenix. Jim had done it on Sunday when he went back down to pick up Otso and John 3. I dropped Jim off, dropped the rental car off (it was a Honda Civic hybrid – only half a tank of gas to get all the way to Arcosanti and back – cool!), and checked in.

Man, am I tired. Thank goodness Ivan was there to do sound for us, but that is some heavy equipment. Fortunately Rus ran into The Naked Guy during this process instead of me, as I would probably not have handled it with equal aplomb. (The Naked Guy showed up partway through the process; he apparently really needed to get to the visitor’s parking lot for some reason. Who knows.)

Sales at the merchandise table were brisk – the two folks who volunteered to help out took in more than $400. Wish I’d had my CD ready, but oh well. Maybe next time.

I need to analyze my setup and come up with something without a single point of failure if I want to play live. The FIREBOX was the bottleneck – if I’d just yanked the mixer cables and swapped them to the Firebox I could have stayed on line. “Everything and Nothing” would have just been different, rather than for all practical purposes nonexistent. I could have done fine with something I could switch to a straight audio-out feed from the headphone jack in an emergency – it worked well enough for the TV appearance, so it would certainly do for a backup. I didn’t use the Vortex much at all, so I could leave it home next time. If the audio was all routed direct to the mixer, and then to the direct box, I could turn up the direct laptop feed in case of an interface crash, or simply switch to whatever else I was using (real modules/etc.) if the computer bit it completely. Add one of the Edirol controllers for a backup if the keyboard goes but the computer’s up. and I should be ready for nearly anything. Though I will still keep the drum and whatever other acoustic instrument(s) I bring handy; they should work for anything short of the power going off. Miking, etc. is to be figured out later. And I’d really like to start playing trumpet again. Would be a nice addition to Brian’s sax.

Admittedly, it would have been nice if I had been able to figure this out earlier, but at least I’ve got a live setup sorted out for next time … and I definitely want there to be a next time.

Worse, Allen’s rig crashed too. I filled with a little ambient percussion, hoping he could get straightened out, but no luck. Still, even on the pieces I was out of due to tech problems, it still sounded great.I was fortunately problem-free for Bill’s piece, and I rocked my MiniMoog solo tonight. Very happy. Drumming was at a way higher standard than the rest of the weekm even happier about that.A great experience, and one I’ll probably write more about later. Especially I need to look at the technucal issues and see how to resolve them, I’m going to play more live gigs.

Rehearsals again; we have the ordered matrix of performance ready now (okay, okay, who’s playing on what, who’s leading, and the song order. Meaning the spreadsheet’s sorted).

The students from the Orme School came by for the “here’s what we do here at Different Skies” demo, which was a load of fun. We did a jam with Mike conductiong us. The best part was geting to do 8-bar complete chaos and everyone coming back in right on one – twice!

During the students-on-stage portion, I got to demonstrate the SD-1 and Ableton Live to two different sets of students. Favorite quote: “You’re actually going to use that sound in the concert?” They thought it was really cool that the one keyboard could do so many sounds, and Ableton Live was just fascinating.

Aleen and I got to do our piece for the first time tonight; I’m playing a marvelously damaged patch called “Migraine Flash” through “Torture Cell” and “Twinkly Bitz”. Allen plays some nice rhythmic stuff while I alternate between this texture and a computer reading of a section from Bacon’s New Atlantis, in which he seems to quite accurately predict electronic music (or something like it) in 1624.

Live works great for this, and I think I’m going to break down and buy a copy soon. I’ve seen a number of other people using it for similar purposes on other numbers.

We had quite an extensive jam session tonight after the tech rehearsal. Tomorrow will probably be rest in the morning and concert in the evening, with a bit of setup in between.

My machine is just a little too slow to handle running Live, the Java program I’ll be using at one point, and TextEdit to keep Bill Fox’s chord chart up as well, so I’ve resorted to setting up everything but Live during the first part of the show, and then shutting down the Java program before starting Live (and reloading everything – I need to save up a while before I”ll be able to purchase a license, so I can’t save anything; I need to copy it all back in again).

Still, seems to work well. I’ve gotten quite a lot of practice on the dumbek and have improved a lot this week. Hopefully I won’t earn a sandwich during the performance! (The sandwich is a Different Skies tradition: John DuVal almost always has a sandwich left over in his cooler after driving down from Portland; the person who screws up worst during the performance “earns” the sandwich.)

Another big day.

Murray, who at the minimum should be knighted, supplied marvelous croissants again, and a Thermos of espresso midafternoon. Nothing like fresh musician fuel.

With 17 musicians and 27 pieces, we needed a spreadsheet to figure out who plays on what and who’s leading which piece. (It averages out to about 11 different pieces per musicians.) We span a wide range: from duets to complete ensembles – and styles from weird jazz to Berlin-style electronica to tribal to totally off-the-wall weirdness. Woo.

I had a number of pieces to practice today, and I’ll be playing stuff from clavinet funk lines to Middle-Eastern drums. It’s going to be pretty active onstage! I will probably be playing a very silly Spike Jones-style percussion solo on one piece, which is gonna be FUN.

I tried some different stuff in the all-star jams tonight: essentially some ostinato “sequencer” stuff played by hand. (I found out that this is hard to do at fast tempos. Duh.) I lasted about halfway through and had to take a rest. Did a little drumming along with Giles, and finished up playing faux soprano (which is pretty silly considering we have a very good soprano player on hand already – hi Brian!).

Kinda late now. People are tired enough now to be discussing politics. Bedtime.

Yesterday was mostly practice and preparations. I spent most of the morning optimizing my setup, but late in the afternoon we put together the intro piece which includes me doing Tibetan throat singing. In for a penny, in for a pound. I’ll be using quite a number of things: Ableton Live, Brad Garton’s <a href=http://music.columbia.edu/~brad/jlooch/">jlooch (slightly modified for use in performance), the SD-1, dumbek, and vocals. I’m finding that I’ve stretched to play a lot of stuff that I probably wouldn’t have done on my own, let alone live on stage; having such an incredible talented and supportive group has made me feel much more confident. I mean, Tibetan throat singing?!

We’ve already established the full running order, and will be doing more runthroughs for various pieces tomorrow; we did a couple of very cool jams post practice in the evening, and then set up the stage lighting. I was up on the ladder since I was about the tallest. Afterward I was also the dustiest.

We adjourned to the music room after that, and watched the version of Nightfall that was filmed at Arcosanti back in the 80’s. Much MST3K style riffing occurred, especially since the tape was very old and had no sound, but we always manage to make our own amusement. “DID I MENTION THE BIG ******* CLIFF???”

Oh yes! And the shirts arrived!

We did the TV show today – the Behringer mixer we tried out last night was actually broken, which we figured out 45 seconds before airtime (ack!). We ended up soloing all the channels, which got us a mono mix good enough to allow us to perform.

Worse: the mixer, once we got it set up, started making little ‘fzt…ftzt…crackle” noises while the previous interview was going (our gear was set up off on the side). Mike had to crawl under the table and try to unplug the speakers. Problem was, he unplugged the audio, not the power, so the speakers immediately began going “HNNNNNNNNN” at full volume. He had to grab the cones to silence the speakers … and unplug the power with his teeth, while lying underneath the table in a tangle of audio and power cables. The wonders of live TV.

The actual performance itself went perfectly well, not a problem at all with the actual music itself. Oh yes: and this was my first ever live performance. Woo hoo!

Back at Arcosanti, we went through a lot of the candidate pieces today, and most of them worked really well. We timed out to about an hour and 15 minutes already; it’ll be interesting to see how it all works out in the end. I’ve volunteered for quite a number of the pieces, playing everything from vibes to Java-generated algorithmic noise, and a surprising amount of percussion, both electronic and real live dumbek. I should invest in a decent microphone for next year (and for my own performances) so I can play the drum along with my own stuff.

Most of today was spent getting set up and setting levels. We spent some time on figuring out how many pieces we had ideas for (27!), and gathering volunteers for each possible piece.

I’ll be leading “Slow, Cheap, and Out of Control”, an ambient piece based on my Java-Cocoa application that randomly generates drones and various other sound effects. I can basically tell it the shape of what I want it to do, but I can’t predict what notes it will choose, or how often it will change things other than in a very vague way. Should be quite interesting, especially since the rehearsals won’t be repeatable! We’ll see if that one fits together well enough for it to work.

Tomorrow there’s a gig at the local TV station in Prescott: DK, Brian, Mike, and I will be doing a few minutes live and then Mike will do an interview. Should be interesting: I’ll be playing a couple of VSTs hosted in Live from a teeny little 2-octave Edirol controller which I’ve only just started playing with today. Whee!
