In 2000, the National Recording Preservation Act, was established. This act requires the Library select recordings each year that are “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

I find it heartwarming and lovely that among the 2005 selections are both Varese’s “Poem Electronique” and Zappa’s “We’re Only In It For The Money”, as Zappa was a big fan of Varese.

Wendy Carlos’ “Switched-On Bach” and Dave Brubeck’s “Time Out” were also included. It’s good to know that someone else thinks they’re worth keeping.

It’s interesting to realize that the Zappa and Carlos recordings were both done in 1968. I didn’t hear the entirety of the Carlos album for another five years.

It’s fascinating to see all of these albums on the list at once. Quite a window into the current Zeitgeist.
