Checkout and Usage
By default, different users will have the following limits on the max days they can checkout an item and the max number of items they can have checked out at one time:
Faculty: 5 items, 5 days
TAs: 2 items, 2 days
- Important: Only Graduate Students and Instructors in a UNC-CH Language Program or Department may check out or put items on reserve
- Important: Undergraduate students may only view items placed on reserve by their instructors.
- Materials and equipment (located in Dey 104) may be checked out by instructional staff only, between 7:30 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday and between 7:30 a.m. and 5:00 pm on Fridays..
- A UNC-One card is required for checking out materials and equipment.
- Repeat violations of checkout policy will result in patrons having restrictions placed on their checking out of videos.
- Important: Instructional staff may reserve films for viewing in the Media Lab, Dey 109, through the FLRC catalog or by coming to the Media Library (Dey 104). Maximum time on reserve is 2 weeks, unless multiple copies exist.
- Please see the Manager to arrange for making copies of movies.
- Important: Requests for copies to be made will be handled on a case by case basis
- In addition to audio tapes, video tapes, CDs, DVDs, and CD-ROMs the following equipment may be borrowed FOR CLASSROOM USE:
- Cassette player/recorders and CD Players
- Cart-mounted TV/VCR/DVD
- All equipment must be returned by the end of the day that it is checked out.
- Digital cameras and camcorders are available for instructor use.
- Important: In order to use the FLRC digital camcorder, users must first attend a training class. Registration information can be found at http://dey110.unc.edu.
- Mobile video units may be used in Dey Hall only. Reservation in advance is suggested.

Reservations
Only faculty and TAs may request that items be put on reservation. The requests may be done online through the online catalog system. In order to make a request, you must be a registered Patron of the FLRC. To be added, simply come to the Media Library in Dey 104 with your One Card and request to be added to the system. After this registration, you will only need to enter your PID to checkout or request reservations.
You will receive an email to either confirm or cancel your reservation. This email will be sent to the email which you used at registration. You can expect email confirmation within one business day of your request.

Purpose of the Policy Statement and Audience to whom it is addressed:
The purpose of this policy is to lead the staff of the FLRC through the process of developing and maintaining the collection and to outline the functions of the FLRC. It is meant to serve as a guide for FLRC staff and foreign language faculty.
Selection Philosophy
- The FLRC will take a very practical approach to selection. Materials in high demand will take priority, and selection will be based on use rather than diversity of holdings.
Selection Responsibility
- The Director (Jim Noblitt) will be in charge of selecting materials with the assistance of a committee consisting of the heads of the respective departments served, representing all language interests.
Selection Criteria
- By user:
- Recommendations solicited from users
- Consultation with faculty and graduate student users.
- Our intended audience is the students enrolled in programs in the
- academic departments we serve. Therefore, our materials will be suitable for the advancement of their educational needs.
- By type:
- Forms of materials collected
- Videotapes
- DVDs
- Forms of materials collected
- Gifts and Memorials:
- All gifts of Videotapes and DVDs are accepted by the FLRC. The FLRC reserves the right to determine the use and disposition of all gifts.
Collection Maintenance
- Deselection (weeding)
- Videos not checked out after a year will be put in archive for a semester.
- At the beginning of each fall semester, a report will be generated of materials to be placed in archive that year.
- After a semester in archive, videos will be purged unless checked out during that semester.
- Replacements
- 50% of the budget will be allocated for replacements and duplicate copies of highly used materials.
Policy Review and Revision Statement
- If anyone feels the need for any additions or revisions, they should contact the Manager in person or at romoore@email.unc.edu. Changes will be approved by the selection committee.
