  • 5 arguments supporting the controversy
    • Most interactions are anonymous, limited accountability for bullies
    • Since you don't know who said it - greater negative affect in negative communication
    • Bullying/abuse viewable by the public - magnifies effect
    • Reduced social cues, messages can be taken out of context
    • People doing the bullying have the time to craft/perfect their messages
    • Youth trying to appear older - adopt more insulting persona, greater shock value
  • 5 arguments refuting the controversy
    • Bullying nothing new, the medium is the only thing thats new
    • With reduced social cues, bullying can be taken out of context
    • People should police themselves, have self-etiquette
  • A research question and a brief outline of how you might study the controversy
    • RQ: Is virtual bullying more frequent that offline bullying?
    • Potential study: Survey methods, but a survey may now work due to the sensitive nature of the questions. Second idea, do a content analysis of bullying via wall postings. Verify the studies findings with teachers.
