[edit] Instructions
For two days, you will record your use of social network sites and related computer-mediated communication technologies (IM/Chat/Forums). You are to record the following:
- TOOLS USED: Record the sites you visit, or the tools you use. Make a note about what you were doing. [i.e.. Facebook - looking 4 Ann's phone num.]
- TOTAL TIME: The amount of time you spent using the tools in the specific hour block. [i.e. 10m]
- MAIN PARTNERS: The two or three people you spent most of your time "communicating" with - this can be asynchronous (responding to messages, viewing profiles, etc.). [i.e. Ann, Bob]
- TOTAL PARTNERS: An estimate of the number of people communicated with during that hour block. [i.e. 12]
- OUTCOMES: A summary of what you accomplished as a result of your use of social network sites during the hour block. [i.e. Found Ann's ph. num; Made plans w/Bob]
[edit] Two-Page Reflection
For your deliverable, you will create a two-page reflection on your use of social network sites. As this is a "reflection," there are no right or wrong answers. You should consider the following:
- How much time do you spend on social network sites. Is it more or less than you expected? Has the amount of time you use the sites changed in the past week, month or year?
- What social groups (close friends, co-workers, family, past contact) are you communicating with most frequently through social network sites? Has this changed in the past week, month or year?
- When do you turn to social network sites, and what motivates you to turn to them?
- How many people are you connecting with, per day, on social network sites? Is it more or less than you expected?
- Do you feel as if your experience in social network sites reflects the diversity of your real world networks?
- What goals are you accomplishing through your use of social network sites?
PLEASE BRING YOUR COMPLETED TIME DIARY TO CLASS. You will not need to turn this in, but it will be checked for completeness. Your two-page reflection will be graded a Pass based on your completion of the instrument and your reflection on the questions above.
