[edit] Week 11 Global Networks

[edit] Group assignment

Jonathan Zittrain, Clay Shirky and James Surowiecki have discussed ways in which the web enables new forms of networked collaboration. In each case, the behavior of groups of individuals circumvents social, political and power structures. Thinking about the example you explored, please address the following:

  • What are the strengths of new media technologies for enabling collaboration?
  • What are the weaknesses? How do we organize around those weaknesses?
  • What are some of the potential outcomes of being globally networked?
  • Do technologies of mass participation enable real, lasting change?

Jonathan Zittrain

- The web works on acts of kindness

James Surowiecki

- The formerly new media

Clay Shirky

- Things only get socially interesting when they get technically boring

- Innovation can happen anywhere

- Greatest increase in expression

- Political implications - information outside of organizations
