[edit] Noticed/News

  • Facebook's New Terms Of Service: "We Can Do Anything We Want With Your Content. Forever." via http://delicious.com/tracyboyer
    • Facebook's terms of service (TOS) used to say that when you closed an account on their network, any rights they claimed to the original content you uploaded would expire. Not anymore. Now, anything you upload to Facebook can be used by Facebook in any way they deem fit, forever, no matter what you do later. Want to close your account? Good for you, but Facebook still has the right to do whatever it wants with your old content. They can even sublicense it if they want.
  • Michael Zimmer: Facebook’s New Content License Extends Beyond Closure of Account
    • The impact of this change will be minimal on the majority of user’s activities and experiences with the social netwoking site, but it does have major implications regarding proper and fair ownerhsip and use of user-generated content, as well as making it more difficult for users to (legally) sever all ties with Facebook if they wanted to move to a different platform.
  • Abraham Lincoln and Facebook for Learning
    • Rather than listing Lincoln’s history in a page or two in a text book, the information is presented using multiple voices, perspectives and formats. It’s more of a conversation than a history book, yet it’s the same information one would expect on a mid-term. How great would it be for teachers to have similar platforms in their schools to use for educational role play? Teachers could use the pages to engage their students on any subject while using a medium familiar and engaging to students.

    • So I went up with a request: What makes a great Facebook update? And I found only that I had not, with this question, managed to compose a great update, if greatness if measured in number of replies. One friend even wrote back, “Has it come to this?” Maybe how to create a great Facebook update is not the kind of thing you should have to ask about.

[edit] Controversies and Dilemmas

[edit] Group Assignment

The reading and Frontline video addressed a number of controversial issues regarding online social networks. The include privacy threats/overexposure, virtual bullying, the degradation of "real world" friendship at the expense of social network sites, and "stranger danger" - the use of social networks by nefarious parties to gain access to young individuals.

Each group should brainstorm for about 20 minutes and present the following:

  • 5 arguments supporting the controversy
  • 5 arguments refuting the controversy
  • A research question and a brief outline of how you might study the controversy

[edit] Questions

  • Social media/networking currently appears exotic, but it will eventually become the new normal
    • Were similar concerns raised about previous technologies?
    • Everything old is new again? Sparknotes vs. Cliff Notes
  • Facebook changing the way we interact with our relatives?
  • Facebook changing the relationship between public and private life?
  • How can we provide young people safe places for content creation and experimentation with social media?
    • What should we be teaching young people about online safety?
  • The discourse around dilemmas:
    • Oversimplification - the talking point-ization of controversial discourse
    • How did these articles treat the controversies? Were they unnecessarily sensational? Did you find them "fair and balanced?"
