Connect-Ireland has ordered an extra two phone lines bringing their
line-count up to 6. Says Martin Maguire, director of Connect-Ireland,
"This will enable C-I to cater for recent increases in user numbers
as a result of being abopted as a support system for groups as
diverse as WUGI - Windows User Group of Ireland; IVBug - Irish Visual
Basic User Group and Macra na Feirme." Connect-Ireland plan even
more line expansions in the near future.

Along with the extra phone lines all Connect-Ireland's existing lines
are being tranferred to a digital exchange. The new number will be
01-679 0120 and should be in operation around December 10th.

The incidence of Irish information providers on the internet is on the
increase with the recent addition of C.ENT.I - Computer Entertainment
Ireland. C.ENT.I are providing the equivalent of an 'In Dublin' or
'Hot Press' over the World Wide Web. Each monthly 'issue' includes
topical articles, band reviews and record reviews. The band interviews
includes well-known names like LiR, Scullion and the Wilde Oscars. Many
of the interviews also include photographs, sound bites and even some
full songs - all with the band's permission.

Users may also obtain details on CDs and records for sale and order them
over the internet by email.

The Good Gig Guide has recently been launched by Julian Plant. The GGG
is an entertainment guide for the Dublin area written for in Visual
Basic for MS-Windows. It is updated fortnightly. Julian who wrote
the software in his spare time said "This is an experiment for me but
with three issues out so far the response has been very positive.
Several users are installing it on their corporate LANs for access
by all their workers!". You can download the Good Gig Guide from
the Connect-Ireland or EMN services.

	      [=---> 2.d) PTT's ISDN Lines <-----=]

"ISDN" means "Integrated Services Digital Network" which is an end to end
international digital network for voice (digitized), data, fax and video
(digitized) communication. A normal ISDN line uses the same wires as an old
analog line, but gives you two logical lines (channels) of 64000 bps each!
You need an ISDN-adapter and such an ISDN line to call a BBS below. Voice
calls to an ISDN line can be made from analog lines too. The connection
charge is the same as on analog lines. You can find rate information in the
phone Book. ISDN-users will see a caller's complete phone number if the
caller is also an ISDN-user or if he is connected to an ISDN-compatible
telephone switch. To call a BBS from outside Ireland, dial your
international access code plus 353 plus the number without the first 0.
For example, from the USA, dial 011 353 1 6773547, or from Germany, 00 353
1 6773547 to reach my BBS.

	      [=--------> 2.e) Internet Systems <----------=]

Millions of systems worldwide are connected to the global Internet. The
Internet is not a commercial network, but a collection of local data
networks that are connected with each other. In Ireland, two such
local networks are operated by IEunet and the HEA.

To access (login) a computer on the Internet, you need an account on a
system that is connected directly via a leased line. This service is called
"Telnet". To get files you use a service called "FTP" (File Transfer
Protocol). Internet accounts are available from several providers, at
Universities, or on large BBS. If you just want to send Internet E-Mail or
read Usenet newsgroups (discussion areas with over 4000 topics), then all
you need is an account on a system that downloads this data regularly. Even
smaller BBS often carry it. Welcome to the Information Superhighway!

[=-------> Internet Mail to BBS <--------=]

In most cases only the sysop can be reached directly via mail. BBS-users
can only be reached on some systems, but the sysop can usually forward the
message to a user if necessary. Ask the BBS sysop for details.

[=-----> Irish Internet Realtime Services <-----=]

These are various *public* and *free* services provided by hosts/entities
of the Swiss core Internet. Depending on the type of service or carrier
service, access is available in different ways and by several programs.

				 IMPORTANT
In order to be able to use any of these services, you need to have access
to an Internet host with the required connectivity and service software!

Each one of the following services is described by three details:

ADDRESS [IP] Network host address of the service, where ADDRESS is the
(untranslated) alphanumeric domain-style address and [IP]
is the (physical) numeric IP address.

TYPE/CARRIER Type of service (or carrier service): the Internet service
application program, which provides the network connection.

DESCRIPTION Name of the service and a very brief description; login
		identification, ports etc., if necessary.

			     & DON'T FORGET...
that many of these services are operated *voluntarily* by nice net folks,
contributing a great deal of useful stuff to the Network. Don't abuse them!

moment a normal call to USA using PTT after 11pm is cheaper than all
companies below. But a calling card has many other advantages. For
example, 1-800- numbers in USA are reachable, no cash is needed at public
pay phones, you can pay for your calls even when you using somebody else's
phone, etc. The following numbers must be called VOICE with a normal
 telephone.

All following modems with MNP and/or V.42/V.42bis (error correction and
 compression) and V.21/V.22/V.22bis (300, 1200 and 2400 bps).
Example: If a modem with "+H" calls a modem with "+V" you will get a
 V.22bis (2400 bps) connection with V.42bis or MNP correction/compression.
Modems will connect with the fastest protocol that both modems support.

International ITU-T standards (the new name for CCITT):

+V 14400 bps V.32bis (99% of modern high speed modems)
V 9600 bps V.32 (older or cheap modems)
  +24 2400 bps V.22bis

	      [=---------------> Networks <----------------=]

All the following networks are non-commercial batch networks (mail exchange
several times a day - not in real time), using FIDONet compatible software.
Data is transfered over normal telephone lines using normal modems. Most
nets carry messages and files. To join or use a net, contact a BBS near
 you.

ILink: Batch network using non-FIDO-Net-compatible software,
		  ILink is worldwide.
Usenet: Largest international, non-commercial message network,
		  data is transfered on Internet.
Internet: Worldwide realtime network, data is transfered on
leased lines, satellite links, etc. Includes services
such as E-Mail, Usenet news, Telnet, FTP, IRC, Gophers,
		  MUDs, WWW and much more.
Millions of systems are connected directly or via UUCP.
		  Addresses look like this: name@address.address.etc
		  or like this: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.
UUCP: Not a network, but a UNIX protocol which let's you
transport Internet/Usenet data over a modem.
X.25: Worldwide high speed data lines. In Ireland it's
called EirePac. X.25 addresses are called NUAs
		  and look like this: 0208057040540
X.28: If you want to access X.25 with a modem, you use X.28
