The successful completion of German 1 and 2 at UNC will help you
develop a base of vocabulary and proficiency in the four language
skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. In order to
achieve these goals, it is important for you to understand the approach
to teaching used by your instructor. This approach requires you
to prepare all assigned material before class and to actively participate
in class exercises and activities. We will discuss grammar points
in class only when necessary because we want to spend our time together
speaking German, not speaking about German. You will find that you
understand relevant grammar points as a result of reading the explanations
in the book before class and inductively learning through classroom
activities. This approach to language instruction will perhaps seem
new, but you will find that the insistence on production of German
will increase your language skill, your confidence and comprehension,
and your enjoyment of the class! The following course materials
and policies will help you achieve these goals:
Textbooks:
Deutsch Na Klar: An Introductory German Course. Text, Workbook and
Lab Manual
Syllabus and Coursepak.
Attendance:
Class will meet four (4) times a week: on Monday, Tuesday,
Wednesday, and Friday. Not unlike achievements in sports or music,
language proficiency is acquired through structured daily practice.
It is the purpose of class meetings to provide you with such practice,
and for this reason attendance is mandatory! Failure to attend a
session could have a negative effect on your chances of achieving
the goals of the course and, thus, on your grade. The policy of
the Department of Germanic Languages allows students only three
(3) absences each semester. No distinction is made between excused
and unexcused—all are counted. After the third absence, the
instructor is required to lower the final grade in the course by
one-third of a grade (e.g., an A would be dropped to an A-, a C-
to a D+, etc.). Since all absences are counted, a situation such
as an extended illness would require special arrangements between
the student and the instructor, in consultation with the Director
of Undergraduate Language Instruction.
Homework:
A short written exercise from the textbook and/or workbook will
be assigned for most class days. Complete this grammar exercise
after reading the grammar lesson for the day. These exercises are
designed to reinforce the grammar points covered in each class period.
Language Lab:
You will be expected to go to the Language Lab in Dey Hall at least
once a week. Your instructor will provide you with further details
concerning this matter.
Tests:
There will be regular tests at the end of each chapter, as well
as written and oral mid-term and final exams. Make-ups for quizzes
and exams will be permitted only in exceptional cases, and only
with the permission of the Undergraduate Course Director. A make-up
final exam is offered every semester, but requires a written explanation
from the dean.
Grades:
Your final grade will have the following composition:
25% Final Exam
15% Midterm
25% Chapter Tests (5)
10% Oral Exams (2)
15% Homework, including essays
10% Class Participation
The policy of the Department of Germanic Languages
stipulates that a student who fails the final exam can receive a
course grade no higher than a C. The course grade IN (incomplete)
cannot be given.
Viel Spaß und viel Glück!
