Advertising Agency
Charlotte, NC
1986-1993
My partner and I developed this agency in Savannah, GA, and moved
it to Charlotte in 1989. I was the creative director and lead copywriter.
At its largest, we employed seven people and our clients included
several Fortune 500 companies, such as Savannah Foods & Industries
(Dixie Crystals), Dixon-Ticonderoga, Coca-Cola Fountain, and Toray
Industries. Other clients included The Waterless Printing Association,
National Printing (Denver, CO), Mercy Hospital (Charlotte), and
Gita Cycles (Charlotte). We won several awards, including an Addy
for copywriting for the 1989 Dixon-Ticonderoga Annual Report.
Editor, Publisher
Savannah Magazine
1984-1986
After eight years as a reporter and then editor for the local
Savannah newspapers, I tried my hand at publishing and managed to
put out two years of a high-quality, glossy city magazine. The publication
won local acclaim and built a loyal readership, but apparently not
enough of either to survive.
Regional Editor
Savannah Morning News
1983-1984
I was responsible for supervising a two-person bureau in Beaufort,
S.C., from the regional desk in Savannah. I assigned and edited
stories, and designed the South Carolina page five days a week.
Chief Wire Desk Editor
Savannah Morning News
1981-1983
I was responsible for laying out the news sections, running budget
meetings, writing headlines and reviewing the paper before each
deadline. I usually supervised a staff of three wire editors. I
also laid out the Sunday live paper, usually 60 to 80 columns.
