"peggy lee sings the blues" is still one of my top 5 records of all time.

a close match for julie london.

female singers of that era completely stun me.  more so than sinatra, who 
i also love.  there is something present in that female voice, a sultry 
quality, an almost forbidden and new sexiness for that time.  sinatra 
didn't need to embrace those qualities to be successful (to me, he sang 
of love and love lost, but not with the depth and richness of feeling 
that those ladies did)

i suspect that without those ladies' velveteen voices, we wouldn't be 
where we are today.  female vocalists, that is.  we'd probably be stuck 
singing silly pop tunes like doris day or commercial jingles or sumpin.
