Re: lag time

>female singers of that era completely stun me. more so than sinatra, who
i also love. there is something present in that female voice, a sultry
quality, an almost forbidden and new sexiness for that time. sinatra
didn't need to embrace those qualities to be successful (to me, he sang
of love and love lost, but not with the depth and richness of feeling
that those ladies did)
Speaking of, here's a good opportunity to hype Ella Mae Morse. Now she was
one hot chickie. Her version of "40 cups of coffee" is one of my fave songs
of all time, even though I can't agree with the sentiment, and "house of
blue lights" just plain _rocks_. Way ahead of its time. And I think it was
like Capitol Records 1st #1 hit, or something like that..million seller
maybe? Or was that "smoke smoke smoke"? I don't remember. Anyway,
everyone should go out & get the Capitol Collectors Series cd entitled
simply _Ella Mae Morse_, and help me in pressuring Capitol to reissue the
_House of Blue Lights_ LP in its entirety. Hey, they finally got off their
butts with _Satan is Real_ so anything is possible.
Oh, and I'd qualify Christa's comments above to read "new sexiness" for
WHITE people.
I prefer Mel to Frank. Husband prefers Frank to Mel. Damn pisces.
Anita O'Day's really cool too. And Connie Boswell.
