Subject: house show review

Everything went off without a hitch. Great turnout (at least 50
people), both bands showed, both bands got paid, no hassles with neighbors
or police (although someone did briefly run their car into a ditch), and
the show was over with by 10 PM.
The please-no-alcohol-in-the-house thing went by the wayside
immediately, as *everybody* brought beer, but there were no resultant
problems. Everybody smoked outside (and we didn't even have to post
signs).
The two bands were pretty interesting - Rent America, a trio of
freshmen at UNC-G, were way crusty hardcore, in sort of a low-fi Los
Crudos way. They didn't sing into the mike at all and the bass player's
amp was the size of a cereal box. He lost one of his shoes while playing
and gave himself a bloody lip. They spent a lot of time explaining what
their songs were about and ended up only playing five songs, but I think
the subject matter was very important to them.
Gingwin, the ex-Hose Got Cable band that was supposedly playing
506 with Pipe, were really heavy, like a combination of Hose Got Cable and
Man is the Bastard. Very slow and dirgy, with occasional crushing
tempo/time signature changes. I liked them a lot. The deal with the 506
show: they told the guy they only had one ex-member of HGC, but he booked
them as Hose Got Cable anyway. Then they cancelled the show, but somehow
the 506 people forgot they cancelled, or something. They went back to
Richmond after playing here.
Anyway, thanks to those who came out. I was really anxious that
our house was going to get the worst of it, or that we were going to have
cop problems, but the early-evening time slot seems to have bought us a
little safety. Watch for more shows this fall--we're trying for weekends
due to school.
(If anyone is in a band and is interested in playing, give us a
call at 932-6013. We can't promise anything, but we'll try.)
