dumb stoner kids and other dumb kids
Just came here from Skoolkids of Raleigh, which is currently experiencing
a flood of insanely keen used vinyl courtesy of a number of local kids
jonesing for their drugs of choice.
There is all manner of keen punkrock there for you. And there was, until
a couple of hours ago, a near-mint copy of Geezer Lake's long
out-of-print debut, "Field Blister," which I snagged for the princely sum
of $2.
As well as a fucked up copy of the Ugly Americans' "Who's been sleeping
in my bed" (you know, the real Ugly Americans, not that groove band from
Austin--the local punkrock outfit con Simon Bob Sinister, Jon McClain,
and Chris Eubank). It's scratched to hell, proof that the seller was a
close personal friend of whomever was buying. oh well.
and _Procedure_ by Blackgirls on vinyl. Got it on CD already; will be
giving away one of the two copies on the show Satruday.
Also picked up brand new split 7" with Bellbats on one side and Econoline
(yeah, I know there have been roughly 278 bands named "econoline," but
here's another one. Nobody ever accused Scott Miller of being too
original.) on the other.
Only listened to it once but I'm feeling favorable about Bellbats.
Course, I've known their drummer-at-the-time, Will Connor, since I was
like 15 years old, so who can say? I'll fill in details later.
But for now, this Geezer Lake is making me feel very purty in my own
eyes, so I'm going to go and molest myself. There's your average random
Geezer Lake fan, Eric: me. Calling them meandering mathrock is all very
nice, I suppose, but it's somewhat akin to someone else saying that your
own band's songs all sound identical and equally wimpily poppy.
Point being that I suspect that hearing any band more than once might
improve the experience greatly. Point being that Geezer Lake's LP _Feet
In Mud Again_ is ingenious and heavy and cornily Herb Alpertly jazzy all
at once. As is the new one, _Hearts Won't Try This_.
Eep. Get your butts down to some record store and scope out the used
bins. The kids are all getting stoned again, and those of us who have
better things to do with our money are getting amazing shit at rockbottom
prices.
Talking to Pine State/Krapper Keeper drummer Grampa Bampa at the record
store tonight about just hanging up a sign "Will trade pot for records"
and watching them line up at the door.
He bought the other day a fine Suckdog LP for like $3 from that selfsame
used bin. don't stop til you get enough.
I'm moving this weekend. whee. Might be having a yardsale next weekend.
If I do there will be nothing you want.
