Have to agree with Ruby as per Margaret's....that be some good eats...
went there for the first time about a month ago...am anxious to go back...
great location as well...a whole evening within a few hundred
feet...dinner at Margaret's, a movie at the Chelsea, Latte Grande at
CUp-a-Joe's, and maybe some pool and a few beers at Oscar's...I mean you
don't have to go see a band EVERY night...just name the date and time and
I'll meet you there...
I'm embarassed to say that I've never eaten at the L&S...but I sure have
put back a few Natty Bohs...
I've also wondered about the lack of late night eateries around these
parts...we actually are a little better off over here in Durham...sure
the food at Pan PAn/Honey's/Wafflehouse sucks, but at least they're there
at 4 in the morning when I finally stumble out of the radio station...
I guess in general, there's just not enough quality "dives" in the area...
The coffehouses in this area don't meet (or I guess they actually exceed)
my low standards either...everything is so shiny, bright and generic...no
character...my dream would be to open a liitle hole in the wall
coffeeshop on/near Franklin street or Ninth Street...name it something
cheesy like "The Counter Culture Cafe"...the decor would be dark and
grungy (and I aint talking music here)...original artwork on the
walls...no matching furniture...mayebe a few tables or booths..the rest
old recliners...carseats...beanbags...old hairdryers...whatever I could
salvage...I'd have books there, but just to read - not necessarily for
sale...and tons of magazines/fanzines to browse thru...you could smoke as
much as you fucking like or not...and just hang out...maybe even
communicate with your peers...you know topical discussion...no blaring
music...maybe have some jazz bands play from time to time...or spoken
word/poetry/prose readings...kinda beat, but not yuppifide beat...maybe
serve a little bit of food, but mostly baked goods and a few dishes that
rotate daily...and of course coffe and maybe a few beers...
Sure there are places in the triangle that have some of these components,
but none of them really hit the mark with me...a few years ago I was
traveling cross country and went to coffeshops in Seattle, Portland,
and San francisco that just blew me away...we have nothing around here
that comes close...it's all in the ATMOSPHERE...but I guess you can't
really design/build that...
Of course, right now I have about five dollars to my name and in six
months I'll probably have about the same...so I won't be opening
one of these myself...
But as I was describing my dream shoppe to a friend of mine the other
day, she did bring up an interesting question...
"WHAT ABOUT SOME KIND OF CO-OP SET UP?"
Sounds good, but could it ever work?
What would it entail?
Anyone know?
And in a desperate stab at musical content...as I write this I'm listening
to the Roy Ayers "Evolution" Anthology...this shit is dope!!...I'm just
sitting here groovin in my chair as I type...hope I don't hurt myself...
