I would disagree heartily with both of you. I had a blast this year,
perhaps more than in '94 and '95, which weren't bad at all either. Free
beer, a hilarious cover band (fucking up the buzz bin songs too much would
be far too typically jaded/cynical/boring - the mere fact that they're
playing them and making (it) fun is part of why I find it so satisfying; I
only wish they'd played longer), and a room full of people like you and
me. There's a real celebratory/fun vibe at that event that you rarely find
in "the scene" during the rest of the year and in that sense the Mammoth
party is kinda like the yearly throwback to something like the Madonnathon
or what have you. Don't expect so much, just enjoy it.
Agreed with Gary on #1Cup. Just kinda OK. I'd heard the first record and
was hoping for more. Home, on the other hand, were really great. I
actually think that most of their recorded material is sorta hit and miss,
but Thursday's show hit the spot in a weird way. Shuffling, quirky pop
songs with a cheesy keyboard (ELO?) and purposefully operatic/high vocal
thing going on. And unpredictable at that. Flaming Lips/TFUL282/Wingtip
Sloat isn't that far, but the whole thing seemed more 70s than that. I was
sick, though, so take that into account.
Rebar on Friday at Lizard and Snake, y'all.
