why it's good to live here part xvi

So you can walk down the street and see a flyer for this Saturday's
Tonebenders/Milagro Saints (L&S) show, hand-printed, signed in the
bottom corner #25/50 by Ray Duffey. Who the fuck numbers an edition of
flyers? It's great.

Ray Duffey is a damnfine drummer from Raleigh who plays, I guess, still,
in Six String Drag and the Tonebenders. Has played in many others. But
so he also owns a couple of letterpresses which live at the Antfarm, and
if'n you made it out there last Friday for their open house you saw
stuff by him ranging from the Noah's cookbook, to tons of show flyers
for Six String Drag, Dish, Whiskeytown, that whole Raleigh axis, to
beautifully typeset broadsides (yes!).

The man does amazing work. If you've forgotten how much can be done with
a press and some nice thick paper and some real ink (as opposed to dry
toner and 20# white xerox paper) then you need to investigate this man.

Try yr nearest kiosk/telephone pole. Or, if in Raleigh, stick your head
in the door at Spinning Mule Records, there just down the street a few
doors from Cup A Joe, and say "hey, I hear this guy Ray Duffey is a
damnfine printer--you got anything he's done?" and Rob or whoever is
working will show you some samples.

And while you're there, buy some records. Two of the three Triangle
cities now have independent record stores owned/operated by real live
working bass players. I have no idea of the instrumental leanings of
Mike Phillips or the Roots people. Anyone? What does Chapel Hill have to
say for itself?

p.s. Carrburritos? Huh? You know, I was just saying to myself "what this
town needs is another burrito joint!" Maybe they'll serve coffee too.
