When I was younger, my folks would drag us all out to the movies to
distract us from the almost-unbearable market-induced pressures to
consume consume consume which always come to a head, for preteen
gentiles, about December 24th.

While the urge to rip giftwrap has pretty much subsided (for me, at
least) I'm hoping that the multiplexes are still open, cuz I can see
doing a little surfing as one distinct possibility.

But yes. Been meaning to write down the various statuses (stati) of the
places I frequent. You always expect it to be the various foreign
(non-christian)-owned joints who'll be open, but then you find out that
a lot of the folks who've moved here from other countries to go into
business think it's cool as shit that they can take whole days off and
nobody will complain, so they do it like everybody else does.

Which is fine by me, I guess. I myself was going to go to work on
Wednesday, but my boss wouldn't let me because he said it'd set a bad
precedent (we do network support for another company, and if I go in on
Xmas day, the folks we support will start expecting us to have somebody
there 24/7, or something). Like I said, if you can take a whole day off
with nobody complaining, you gotta take advantage of it.

Joints by the interstate are more likely to be open, so if you're
desperate for something, I'd try the Texaco or the BP by the 54/40
interchange. Or any other which is closer to yr house.

I myself ought to hang around the house, basking in the glow of all the
new lightbulbs I installed. Though I hate it during the summer months,
in the dark of winter I have to say light=pleasure for me.

I've got 100 movies on video I haven't seen in a while or ever, I've got
1,000 records lying around here somewhere, and thanks to my habit of
buying books I think I'll want to read at some point in the future, I've
got lots to read.

So why will I be out driving around looking for something else to do?
It's in my nature.

Anyway. Request for list of open stores duly noted. I'll be around the
whole fukkin week, so if anybody has any bright ideas for entertainment,
fire 'em over.

On another note, Rebar (who were doing that slow sloppy thing last
night, which only made it all the more amazing when they lurched into
full force for a fucked-up refurbishing of "The Burn That is on Me" and
a cover of "Moonage Daydream," which is one of those songs that doesn't
ever seem to end on record, even, thus explaining why it seemed to go on
forever live as well) confessed to having a whole *library* of David
Bowie covers worked up, and volunteered themselves for New Years Eve
this year. Anybody got a heated basement?

Hmm. Two years ago I saw Resol's final show, as did many of the rest of
you. Fucking amazing. Whole night was fucking amazing. That band from
Richmond whose name I've temporarily forgotten did that thing where they
intentionally played the same riff 100 times, just to see what would
happen, I guess. It was painful.

Last year I spent the whole night inadvertently engaged in one of those
annoying philosophical discussions, the subject of which I can't
remember (gawd, I'm afraid it had something to do with the existence of
absolutes. ick), with the former singer for Blightobody. He'll do that
to you.

I've already been invited (jumping back to Xmas again, accidentally) to
several friends' parents' homes for *their* xmas activities. Yick. Only
thing worse than my *own* family holiday rituals is having to navigate
somebody else's.

Though I remember staying with a girlfriend's family over New Years one
year, in high school. Her mom was a northern transplant who insisted on
doing the whole Hoppin John and greens thing. It was surreal enough to
hold my interest for a while. Then we went out and drove around looking
for a party we'd heard about but didn't know the address of, so we never
found it, and spent the midnight hour in the car, wishing we had bottle
rockets.
