Wifflefist/Dead?!?

DIA DE LOS MUERTOS
(³Day of the Dead²)

Halloween has become such a wretched commercial event that itıs hard
to don some costume and go to yet another lame excuse to drink. The
true meaning of Halloween has been forgotten -- All Hallowıs Eve, the
day before our somber All Saintıs Day. Our southern neighbors from
Mexico, however, have embraced All Saintıs Day and not only honor the
saints, but all of their dead. They celebrate with a very festive
³Day of the Dead². Mexicans honor and respect death, but are not
afraid to have fun with it. It is traditional to dress as a skeleton,
to eat skull shaped candies, to picnic in cemetaries and to have great
feasts with seats at the table reserved for dead friends and family.
People, young and old, gather to dance, sing and play games.

Letıs imagine that instead of it being Sunday, October 27th at the
Catıs Cradle in Carrboro, NC, that it is early November in a small
Mexican village. You and everyone you know is getting ready for the
festivities. Who else will be there?

Wifflefist
Those local looney people who performed the deeply religious, ³Hee
Haw/Lawrence Welk Show² and the humorously riotous, ³Passion Play²,
have engineered yet cultural event. As always, there will be some
movies and some obnoxious behavior. Check out some of the cast of
characters they have brought together this time...

Polycarp
The sweethearts of the Wifflefist/SuperClamp prom once again show how
oddly flexible they are as the headlining Day of the Dead band.
They'll make you shimmey with fear and shake with dancey delight.

Mark Hosler
Known for his quirky noise band Negativland, Mark joins us from the
West Coast for a little bit of silly noiseplay. He may be skinny, but
he packs a wallop!

Craig Baldwin
A filmmakerıs filmmaker! Craig Baldwin is a master of found film
footage manipulation. His film, Tribulation 99, looks at the United
Statesı past and itıs terrifying future as subterranean aliens control
public policy. Craigıs in town showing Sonic Outlaws, a new film
about the Negativland and other sound manipulators and their constant
legal battles. He will grace our Day of the Dead event with some of
his coveted films.

Renelvis
While he is Wifflefistıs most beloved Filipino, he also is a show
stopping performer. Before your eyes, he will summon up one of the
greatest singers the world has known for one last performance -- the
one he never gave.

Loteria!
To call Loteria ³Mexican Bingo² just doesnıt do it justice. Itıll be
fun, youıll see. Prizes too!

The Day of the Dead has absolutely nothing to do with the Grateful
Dead. Believe me.
